Hands-on: Bulletstorm's horde-like 'Anarchy' mode photo

Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 -- they're all enjoyable in their own ways. It wasn't until I played Bulletstorm though that I remembered how pure stupid fun FPS games used to be. You know, games like Doom, Quake, Unreal and it's ilk. Shooters of yesteryear held one thing above all else: What type of ridiculously overpowered stupid ass guns could be included to offer the most fun ever?

People Can Fly's Bulletstorm takes a page from the old school shooters but there's so much more as you're constantly rewarded for being a clever girl. There's so many ways to kill and the more creative you are with your depravity, the more points you'll earn for bigger and badder weapons.

Bulletstorm (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [Previewed])
Developer: People Can Fly, Epic Games
Publisher: Electronic Arts
To be released: February 22, 2011

First the bad news: Bulletstorm won't have a versus-style multiplayer of any kind. Instead, we'll be getting two other competitive modes: "Echos" and "Anarchy." "Echos" mode is the single-player experience without any of the story elements. Instead, you'll just be trying to rack up as many points as possible as you compete with your friends and on a global scale through the leaderboard system.

It's a shame there won't be a real versus mode, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Games like Pac-Man Championship Edition DX and Zuma Blitz have shown me that there's something more gratifying (and frustrating) when you're constantly reminded how you stand against your friends.

It would be silly of the house of Unreal and Gears to exclude multiplayer completely, which is where "Anarchy" mode comes into play. This is the game's equivalent to a "Horde" mode, where waves of increasingly harder enemies attack and up to four players can work together to not only survive, but to also get as many points required to reach the target score.

You can't play "Anarchy" like you would a standard "Horde" or "Firefight" match. Points matter and the only way you can get the amount of points needed is with teamwork. There are even moments when the game highlights a random enemy giving you a chance to score more with a team attack. For example, one player sends an enemy up into the air and the rest of the team shoots the guy to pieces. Failing to reach the target score will result in the team repeating the same wave until the score is reached.

Points also go into building up a player's weaponry and skills. You start off with the default assault rifle and after every wave, you'll be able to use the points to purchase new guns, upgrades for weapons or increase attributes. This preview build of Bulletstorm only had a few guns to play with, including the hilarious Flail Gun and the quadruple-barrel shotgun. Each gun also offers an overcharged alt-fire that will evaporate an enemy in one shot. Note that with the exception of the main assault rifle, you'll need to purchase ammo for the other guns you've unlocked after a wave.

Along with the guns, players make use of an electric whip which causes enemies to go into slow motion as you reel the enemy in. You'll be able to shoot their defenseless body, perform a sliding kick or kick them away with your boot (boot attacks also send enemies into slow-mo) and send them flying off into a death such as a wall of spikes.

Only one whip upgrade was available during the preview, letting you launch enemies -- and everything that's not nailed to the ground -- into the air. Baddies, explosive barrels and whatever else that was caught in the special whip attack blast are all going in slow-motion making for a good skillshot opportunity.

Just one of ten maps (not a final number) was available to play on and the maps themselves will play a part in scoring big. Spiked walls, man-eating plants, short-circuiting power stations littered the map "Dead Rock" and at the center of it all was a gigantic electrical tornado. It all kind of reminds me of a theme park, except all of the attractions kill you. My favorite of the traps was a giant dinosaur-like skull which snap its mouth closed when enemies are kicked into it and results in the "NOM NOM NOM" skillshot.

Visually, the game looks great. The environment and characters are pretty detailed and killing a person is just so gory! I also love how the cheesy the phrases like "Deep Penetration" and "Shocker" are as they appear on the screen after you perform a skillshot.

If I have one minor complaint from what I've experienced so far, it's that I'm not a fan of the control layout when it comes to running. Gears players will be at home with the A or X button being the run button, but I'm totally used to running associated with the left stick. I feel like I'm losing precious seconds after I stop running, but then again, I'm only fighting the A.I. and there doesn't seem to be a real penalty for dying anyway. If you die, you'll remain on the ground until a partner literally kicks you back up.

It's obvious the market is saturated with serious first-person shooters. With the exception of the Serious Sam games and Duke Nukem Forever (finally), there just hasn't been a shooter that was this balls-to-the-wall insane. Bulletstorm is easily going to be one of my favorite, if not my number one, FPS of 2011.

Is it split-screen?

Also, I guess they ditched versus because they couldn't figure it out with all the "badass upgrades" - players would just be whipping each other around nonstop, haha.

Oh fucking yes, this is exactly what I wanted. I love Co-op over multiplayer and this fits just perfectly for me. I have wanted this game since I heard of it and watched the silly fun but now I have a confirmed purchase.

Day one. But given the speed at which you run through it, I hope we won't be done with the singleplayer within 5 hours or something.

I think anarchy sounds like a good gametype. It seems that even co-op modes turn into people trying to get the most points for themselves in games these days...this may sound odd, but I think individual scores should be done away with in team based modes, and just have one collective score. Perhaps that would encourage players to actually play as a team and not just be a score-whore

"Shooters of yesteryear held one thing above all else: What type of ridiculously overpowered stupid ass guns could be included to offer the most fun ever?"

Not to nitpick, but I always thought the appeal of old-school shooters was level design (compare Doom to any modern shooter and cry) and weapon synergy (where the player had access to a wide range of weapons that could complement each other on the fly, rather than offering the player two weapon slots and watching the user base gravitate towards the most versatile guns). But that's just me.

The no versus multiplayer is a deal breaker for me. I can't see how People Can Fly and especially Epic Games could make the mistake of releasing a modern shooter and marketing it to FPS fans without versus mode. It's a shame in my opinion because I thought the crazy weapons looked fun and showed promise.

I don't see how this can have longevity and achieve popularity when people are already playing Halo Reach, Black Ops, BFBC2,etc and with Gears of War 3 just around the corner I can't see many advantages to buying Bulletstorm.

Anarchy mode sounds fun, but why exclude a certified multiplayer versus mode? It's a FPS for Christ sakes

I think it's pretty much a no-brainer that with multiplayer versus this game would be better received and hold a fanbase for a longer amount of time. Gamers expect more in their games now not less. When you are playing this a few months after release and it's hard to matchmake in random games you can blame it on the lack of versus mode for sure.

'bout time you got this up, Hamza; my boner's been taut like a freshly cooled candy cane (and shaped that way, too) ever since I heard you'd been given a preview.

Also, this:

"Bulletstorm won't have a versus-style multiplayer of any kind."

makes me unbelievably happy. Co-op is so much more suited to my hippie nature, it's nice to see them focusing solely on it.

Even if this game did have versus multiplayer every weapon would most likely be brutally overpowered and all the game would be is running around hoping 1 hit killing everyone, that or easily being thrown around by the whip and boot. And I doubt CoD or Halo players will drop their precious game to switch over to this anyway.
This seems like a fun game to fuck around with and that's exactly what I intend to do.

@Bobthecatlol

If you're making a shooter that's competing directly in the same space as COD or Halo, then yes, multiplayer is a must. However, the FPS genre is big enough now that not all games have to follow that same mold.

There are games like Bioshock and Half Life that offer a very different type of experience, and adding a competitive multiplayer mode that will promptly be ignored in a few weeks doesn't really bring any real value to the end consumer. I'd much rather have a meaty single player experience than another 6-hour long campaign with forgettable multiplayer tacked on.

But this is no Bioshock or a Half Life, it's a Gears of War and lets face it Gears and CoD aren't exactly shakespeare. When I look at Bulletstorm I see a game that looks badass like Gears and Unreal but lacks the hook that makes it one of those games people will play for years.

Thanks Hamza for the preview. I'll definitely be picking this up for some insane fun time with mates. I too have missed the old days of over the top ridiculousness. I think developers lost their way once graphics took priority in people's minds.

Bulletstorm will be my co-op shooter and I'll pick up Brink and Killzone 3 for versus when I wanna murder my friends =P

"lacks the hook that makes it one of those games people will play for years."

I understand that you prefer versus games, but you're talking as if there was no multiplayer at all. If anything, Bulletstorm's over-the-top violence in its co-op mode IS that hook you're talking about... it just isn't the hook for you.

Also, this:

"If you die, you'll remain on the ground until a partner literally kicks you back up."

needs to be in every game ever made from this point forward.

I am really dissapointed. Super dissapointed.

I actually figured that there was not going to be a versus multiplayer but I was hoping for a better co-op experience. Something completely different than the single player experience.

I had a dream that this would be Phantasy Star Online (the dreamcast version) remade into a FPS. That would explain the points system as you would use it to level up and get better gear.... Way to crush my dreams.

I guess I'll just wait for Gears of War 3 instead.

I'm all about this game right now, and to hear that it's going to push co-op to the forefront rather than versus only makes me that much harder in the pants area. Maybe not as hard and crooked as Mr. Dixon, but I'm getting there. ; )

Given the mechanics of this game (slo-mo, whip shenanigans, skillshots) I just wouldn't expect it to translate well to a versus experience. First guy to land a hit with the whip gets a kill. There's not a whole lot of fun there. That said, there's gonna be a lot of people, other than those we've seen here, that'll say "No versus? No buy."

I think somebody, possibly multiple somebodies already said this stuff, but I'm doing it too. Because I agree.

I want this game bad. Even just a versus deathmatch game mode would be a great way to extend the life of the game.

As much as I am sick of CoD, I can say that the multiplayer does keep one coming back

I'm still excited for this game because it's becoming one of few left that doesn't follow Call of Duty's mindless MP model that's more about grinding than having fun. The presentation looks slick enough to make you go "wow" and the sequences are reminiscent of the tension I got from playing Painkiller back on the PC in the day with the over-the-top effects and guns with wicked fast gameplay that makes you pay attention instead of just focus on masturbating your ego for want of muscle memory twitchiness.

Good shit.

I want this game to be as good as Unreal, so that I may heap my affections onto it as I slowly dream away of the non-GoW games Epic used to make.
Not that I don't love GoW too, but man I miss my six-barrel rocket launcher and my insta-gib rifle.

Day One. Game looks so badass... Glad to see focus going into Co-Op and no wasted time going into a useless VS mode. COD already exists for Team Deathmatch, this will allow for something different.
