HanbitSoft wants to relaunch Hellgate: London photo

HanbitSoft, a Korean publisher, wants to bring Hellgate: London back online in the US and Europe. One problem, though: Namco-Bandai needs to give up their publishing rights for the game in NA and PAL territories before that can happen.

“There have been many inquiries from US and European Hellgate players surrounding the availability of the game in those respective territories,” wrote HanbitSoft’s CEO, Kee Young King in a recent blog post.

“HanbitSoft does own the intellectual property of Hellgate: London and is interested in providing the game in the US and Europe, but is unable to do so at this time because Namco Bandai has the publishing rights for those regions

If you haven’t guessed already, Hanbit is behind the steering wheel of Hellgate: London in Korea, and according to Gamasutra, has a San Francisco-based studio focused on the continued development of the game.

It sounds like Hanbit has their stuff together. I wonder if Namco will give up their property rights for less than 1,600 Microsoft Points? I don’t see how holding onto an MMO that they killed in January is doing them any good.

Hmm, this would be interesting. Hanbitsoft actually has a good rep and this may save the game.

It may not be doing them any good, but Bandai especially is a whore for holding onto their properties like a grasping claw of DOOM.

Why would they want to risk relaunching it in the United States or Europe? They're already doing pretty well in South Korea. But we all know, South Korean MMOs have low standards anyways, and therefore can always make money no matter how bad the MMO.

I agree with Vedicardi2. I read the 3 books and find the world of Hellgate London to be awesome as awesome can be. The templar are so cool it's ridiculous. It's such a shame this game was a shamble-bomb.

There was non-subscriber access, and then added content on top for subscribers. Really all anyone wants is the ability to continue playing the game online with their friends, even without access to subscriber content.

Namco Bandai benefit from holding the rights by removing a potential competitor from the market - that's one less game to take attention away from things they're trying to sell. The benefit from selling the rights is probably greater, though.

@Chronic Logic

First of all it's an ARPG not an MMORPG. Second of all, Hellgate is fantastic so stfu. Third of all, everyone who hasn't played hellgate should feel bad because they are the reason hellgate failed. Fourth of all, Bill roper hates you.

@DeusPayne

I had a lifetime membership and I'd be pretty upset if I didn't get my subscriber content back if the game goes back online. Stonehenge was the only thing worth playing as a high level character and that was subs only.

Actually, I really liked Hellgate. I think it was a great game. But the thing is, it wasn't an MMO. As far as I know, it was never meant to be an MMO and was never advertised as such. Nevertheless, people insisted on insisting that it WAS an MMO, an MMO that sucked.

It was NOT an MMO.

And it sure as hell didn't suck. The way I see it, it was the new Diablo. And to that effest, it was damn great.

Yeah, I was a lifer too, but not too many people I played with were. So I'm willing to settle for at very least active servers to play on at all. And yeah, to me it was an over the shoulder/first person Diablo. Once the many many many many many (many many many many) game breaking bugs from launch, it was a really fun game.

If you played this game with friends, in the right modes, it was AWESOME. There is no multiplayer game out there quite like it. I miss it a lot!
