Now here is a very interesting development from the Smash DOJO. A new item called Assist Trophies will allow you to summon random Nintendo characters onto the battlefield. From the screens released so far, Hammer Bro, Nintendogs and Samurai Goro are the first "items" announced. Just like the Pokemons, the Assist characters will be invincible.
From the sounds of it, there are going to be a lot of Assist characters:
Assist Trophies allow you to enjoy even more characters who couldn’t quite make it as playable fighters. You may even see some that only the most dedicated fans will recognize, so you’ll have to look forward to them.
Personally, I'd rather see a bigger character list than what essential is a cop-out. Samurai Goro could have easily been an additional playable character so this particular development doesn't sit to well with me. Although, an all item Assist Trophy battle could prove to be very fun.

The nintendogs just look annoying, both in this game and their own.
I think hammer bros is a good idea though... there were about a million pokemon in the pokeballs in melee, it's nice to be able to summon characters from other games.
Furthermore, am I the only one who thought Melee had enough characters? There was a bit much cloning for my liking as it was (dr mario mario luigi, pikachu pichu, falcon ganondorf, fox falco, link young link...) and yeah maybe some of you may say "but everyone has a different play style, sometimes those subtle differences can be important" and you'd be right, but when it happens too much I start to think maybe Nintendo is just getting lazy. If they didn't clone maybe we'd have six completely different characters instead of six clones.
i want to see waluigi along with wario. that would be badass.
Samurai Goroh never had much of a chance compared to all the more definitive Nintendo icons out there.
If I don't see Ike, Hector, or Lyn in this game, either as assists or playables, people's heads will be squished on the sidewalk.

Man when i checked the site this morning i snapped when i saw samurai goro. I thought it was a great character that many people other than fanboys were unaware of. Then my boner went down severley when i saw he was in an assisted trophie. I think that all the characters that people want in the game will just end up being assisted trophies.
But here's my number one pic for a Brawl playable. I know it's a long shot, but it would be so incredibly awesome: Magus Zeal (Chrono Trigger series, for the unwashed heathen). Maybe Chrono thrown in as well. But Magus would be so ridiculously incredible, and I'd want him in long before Chrono.
