First up, Game Reactor has a ton of new screenshots and character art from Halo: Reach. And for whatever reason, their gallery features a plate of delicious looking shrimp. Shrimp confirmed for Halo: Reach?!
In other news, Halo: Reach is not Halo 4. This comes from Bungie as they clarify that Reach isn't a continuation of the Master Chief story and that it's not the start of a new trilogy. Joseph Tung tells Edge Magazine that Reach is "a completely standalone game."
Well, duh. Besides, if we were to number all these games in the order they were released, then Reach would be Halo 5 technically. If we go by the timeline though, then Halo: Reach is Halo 1, Halo 1 is Halo 2, Halo 2 is 3, Halo: ODST is 4 and Halo 3 is Halo 5. Granted, if you factor in Halo Wars which happens before all the other games ... well you get the point.
The really interesting part of this interview is when Joseph teases that players will want to replay Halo: Reach's campaign. It sounds like players will be able to take multiple paths through the campaign and the latest Edge-Online interview confirms this.

Bungie: "Halo: Reach for us is not Halo 4" [Eurogamer]
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Just wanted to get that out of the way.
Goodbye.
And by consistency, I mean in terms of keeping the series afloat despite the games themselves being somewhat lackluster at times.
But hey, there are other, better developers and even more MS has the cash and the marketing department plus a giant horde of loyal fans to feed this series for a while yet.
Aesthetics aside, I look forward to playing the Beta first to see if this is worth my cash. As ODST was NOT worth $60.
We all need a break from the game of knife/shotgun tag MW2 has become.
What you just said. I feel that way too.
Even if they were in the same fictional Universe, the events of the Marathon trilogy happen over 200 years after Halo.
@LsTr Of SmG
I wouldn't like to call any Halo game the best, I like both Halo 3 and ODST for the engine they are running on.
@Drakengard
I wouldn't care for a Halo game not handled by Bungie anyway, they do good work damnit.
That is sad. Did you read the book?
Nah, I haven't read any of the books. I just made that comment because I went back to Halo 3 multiplayer the other day because I was tired of getting akimbo'd/shotgunned/knifed to death in MW2 and was happy at how much fun it still is.
Sometimes I just want to play a first person SHOOTER you know, not an elaborate game of tag.
I'm not condemning Halo single player. It is fun (while it lasts), but competitive multiplayer is what I personally enjoy.
Certainly true. Bungie's work is always quite good. Even as a person who isn't a big Halo fan, I cannot deny that Bungie's work is always well done, even if certain design choices like the sticky aim sniping in Halo 2, were bad.
Halo without Bungie is like Final Fantasy without SE. It just wouldn't make any sense though it doesn't mean they have to be bad either.
Buuuuuuuut (and this is an inquisitive, not confrontational tone) how would the two disc approach even work if applied to Reach?
Unless they do something like "here's every multiplayer map from Halo 1-3 adapted for Reach" on the disc plus whatever they design specifically for Reach, I don't even see a point in two discs.
That would make a pretty great pitch to buy a "Collector's Edition" though. Pay an extra 20 for all this content now or get nickel and dime'd over the next few years on DLC.
Didn't they do something similar in ODST?
ODST's second disc just has Halo 3's entire multiplayer component plus every Halo 3 map released, plus the additional Mythic 2 maps. Some of 1 and 2's maps were remade for 3 though.
On that note, I'd rather see something crazy, like updated versions of Halo 1 and 2 with full multiplayer and achievements. Of course, I wish for the impossible.
Just a heads up for those following Reach news: Bungie's got profiles of the members of Noble Team up now on the official page. Enjoy.
Bungie's new IP, haha, what a fucking joke.
I've never had any fun with a Halo game, there's something about Homo-erotic space marines sliding around on piss poor levels emptying clips into each other, like whole clips, and still needing to bash them in the face with the butt of a weird alien gun that just isn't fun for me.
Each to their own, but I'm hoping they sack off Halo and put out something new, interesting..... and good.
I know you're not a Halo fan by any stretch, but new details for the Halo:Reach game may encourage not to dismiss it just yet.
(All these are from the feature preview from the latest copy of EDGE)
- The game will feature fewer guns, but will be meatier, punchier weapons than the previous Halo fare.
- Shield system more comparable to Halo 1 than the more recent installments. (shields recharge slower)
- Day and night time missions allow you to take advantage of armour modifications that you can hold on to rather than fire-and-forget.
- (Though still under discussion) one-button melee attacks will not be an instant kill.
- Although Reach will be using the same engine as Halo 3, it has undergone a massive overhaul (Bungie devs claim the engine has been "gutted").
These and other reasons are good enough for me to give Bungie the benefit of the doubt on this one.
