The first ViDoc for Halo: Reach has the Bungie team talking about what they're doing different from the SPARTANs, the environment, weapons, the Covenant bastards and more. Bungie is going for a more human approach in Reach and one of the things they're improving is the character animation. They're using motion capture and they're putting more polygons into the characters which means all the human faces won't look like they've been stepped on a couple of dozen times like in Halo 3.
Alright, I give Bungie. The debut trailer didn't hook me in, but this new ViDoc has me feeling just like I did when I discovered Halo: Combat Evolved. Just the fact that Bungie says in this ViDoc that they want to capture the same feelings from the original Halo makes me very happy.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I'm incredibly excited for this. I'm back to the stage where I dissect these videos for the smallest details (like how the HUD flashes Double Kill at 6:40, similar to the metagame in Halo 3).
Though has far as what they've been showing off thus far, I really like what they did with the shields on the Elites this time around (glowing and pulsing around them after they've been hit). Details like that really make me interested in their development process and the game overall.
Reach will be better than ODST.
... thats pretty much a given. Thats like saying 'I bet this coin will fall down if I drop it'.
Thats some pretty low standards... the vid really shows us what ODST should have been, but with that said the impression I'm getting from the vid is more detailed maps and levels, customization, and Squad tactics. Not mind blowing but a step in the right direction.
Okay but in all seriousness that ViDoc was some good shit. I wish all developers can be as devoted as Bungie.
Pretty much every single FPS is better than Modern Warfare.
Halo's coming back in a big way. That looked fantastic for an alpha. This is the first time I've been looking forward to a Halo game since the first one. It made me happy to hear the one engineer say that massive sky boxes are quintessential to the series, because that's always been one of my favorite things about Halo.
Amazing ViDoc.
There is a possibility of a combination of these things but I have a feeling MS is close to allowing 2 discs without the fee associated with additional discs, not that that would effect an in-house project either way but I think Halo: Reach will lead the way.
I wouldn't count out two disks, myself. But more along the lines of what ODST did, not, let's say, a 40 hour RPG.
looks like an awesome game. bungie are definatly stealing my money on this one
Halo2 == amazing multiplayer on console.
Halo3 == mmmm don't know what to say.
Halo: ODST == this should have been the fan service by Microsoft and it should have been given out as a freebies for Halo (any version) owner to celebrate the success of 360.
Halo:Reach == tantalizing game by the look of it (the game in motion is incredible). But I have been burned b4 so I will wait until more details come out and beta test run in May.
If you like Military Sci-fi genre, there are much better books than Halo (I read them all and they are okay). I recommend following books:
Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers (the seminal military sci-fi book which influences countless sub-genre including japanimation, aliens, etc.)
Gordon Dickson's Dorsai.
Joe Haldeman's The Forever War.
Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.
John Steakley's Armor
William Dietz Legion of the Damned.
Stephen Baxter's Exultant (2nd book of the Destiny's Children, real hardcore sci-fi book): this rocks in terms of how the FTL travel changes the battle strategy (i.e. you essentially know the result of future battles before it even begins...)
Jack Cambell's The lost fleet series (serial pop-sci-fi-military stories).
Greg Bear's Anvil of Stars (Not really heavy mil sci-fi, but it's still good reading. The first book is the forge of god.)
I can think of so many other military sci-fi books which laid the foundation for Haloverse.
Even Alastair Reynolds books have a lot of interesting ideas (I recommend all of his books, but Prefect is a good book to start.
Charles Stross' Iron Sunrise is also good.
Sorry for listing so little collections but I figured these titles represents some of the better military sci-fi stories in my mind before Halo.
I've always thought it would be cool if the game responded to the way you play. Like if you play run and gun the covenant knows your location and keeps sending Phantoms to drop off additonal troops but if you play stealthy they aren't sure where you are.
1. redesigned weapons and characters
2. the new grenade launcher
3. stealth kills
4. finally the ability to sprint
I WANT THIS GAME
