It's hard to imagine a Spartan taking the time to draw a chick in the nude while on board an Olympic-class passenger liner. But that wasn't really what Halo: Reach's creative director wanted us to think about when he likened the game's story to James Cameron's uber-popular flick Titanic.
Speaking to Edge, Bungie's Marcus Lehto said Reach tells a dreary tale. Kind of like Titanic, because we already know a bajillion people are going to die -- and not necessarily because Reach sinks like a submerged ice cube tray.
"Reach is like Titanic," he told Edge, "we know the end from the beginning. Reach is going to fall and 700 million people are going to perish as a result."
"It's a very dark story to tell," he continued, "and our goal is to allow the player to experience the Noble Team's efforts and get satisfaction from them continuing to fight forward and achieve the final acts of what we can't talk about today."
We get what Lehto is saying. That nude scene was pretty hip. In a emotional kind of way, of course.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

ODST really sucked me into it's story - by the final few missions I was really striving to protect the team. When the story was at it's bleakest I was dreading every cutscene thinking that one of the cast's number was up!
I wasn't too keen on the romantic understory, but the camaradary of the ODST squad members made the back end of the story a really joy to play - which was a fantastic change from the usual Halo story.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I think Bungie are at their best when doing the smaller, personal stories so I am really looking foward to playing through this campaign.
And for the love of Christ get better actors than ODST. Some better writers couldn't hurt either. That dialouge was teeth grinding.
That's the best scene from the book. They better not cut that out.
Random Spartan: Gentlemen. It has been a privilege playing with you tonight.

(Yes I know I could Google this but I don't want to wade through Halo lore to find the answer.)
In ODST they reference that one of those guys (the guy, ya know the leader, that guy) was on Reach when shit was clusterfucked. I'm pretty sure I remember vague name throwing about Reach in 2 and 3 as well.
It's not an event that really had an affect on the trilogy or ODST. So it's not like they'd dig into it too much. It's really explored in the book Fall of Reach and kind of dropped from there on out because it takes place so long before Halo 1 etc.
Well, hopefully Reach will be better than 2 and 3.
Reach is the planet the Pillar of Autumn is escaping from at the beginning of the first Halo. The escape is also shown in the beginning of Halo 2.
This can't end well.
Ya i do seriously question if Bungie can really pull this off... Killing off millions in an of itself is NOT enough to really move an audience; it's all about the delivery. Its the difference between "wow big explosion" and "... oh... shit"; the difference between displaying a statistic and a tragedy... They are already fighting an uphill battle by telling us it's going to happen as it helps really loose the shock factor (frankly i was pretty much in the dark until just now as the games have never focused on reach; what little dialogue there was i easily forgot it apparently)... without that shock factor, you really need some damn good storytelling to pull it off and that is something that the halo games have never been known for
One word: EPIC!
you hit upon one of my annoyances with Bungie's stories... they jump to the conclusion that players will read the books. Right now, Lehto is assuming people actually read fall of the reach and such and thus ended up spoiling the game and the book for those who did not... the beginning of Halo 3 was really annoying since many expected it to takes place where halo 2 left off, but it turns out that is all covered in the books... really when you do shit like that you are supposed to provide some summary of background information of what happened in the books to keep the gamers up to speed.
You know the end if you played Halo 1.....the end of the fall of reach is where Halo 1 begins, they describe that pretty well. Not to mention the fall of reach is referenced heavily in other games, "lets not have another reach", let hope it's not as bad as reach", "such and such survived reach". All in all you get that reach was a pretty nasty scenario.
For the love of god, make this game more plot-centric than usual. You've got a great story behind Reach, don't gloss over it like you did with the others for people to have to buy accompniments to actually follow the story properly.
I think ODST was a Beta version to test this game out. One of my theories ;D
But on a serious note: Why would you guys suddenly start flaming when the game isn't even out yet? Patience padawans. Patience.
But I agree with @Xzyliac. I know Bungie CAN make a hell of a story and plot if they really tried. I just hope this isn't another game to milk some money out of our pockets. ODST was just...mehh.
If this game turns out to be good...then I might actually enjoy Halo once again. Halo 3 is dead to me and ODST quickly faded.
