Halo: Reach might use Project Natal photo
  share: Twitter Facebook Reddit Digg
filed under: #Project Natal

Microsoft’s Project Natal is an attempt to snatch grannies from their Wiis or a brilliant way to make gamers look like bigger retards while huddled in front of expensive television sets. Either way, it doesn’t matter: Microsoft’s motion controller thing is coming and with it, a host of new gaming possibilities. It’s likely that next year (if that actually is when Natal hits), we’ll surely be assaulted with a variety of videogame tie-ins -- many of the quirky variety, no doubt. Bungie Software’s Halo: Reach could be one of those games.

Speaking to the Seattle Times (via Kotaku), Bungie big man Harold Ryan said Project Natal support for the announced but mysterious Halo: Reach is a possibility. "I absolutely think 'Reach' could be enabled with it," he said simply.

We like the idea of subtle gesturing for a grenade if the action is too hot for a button press. As long as Bungie strays from the Wii-tacular stuff -- waggling to cut a sausage, shaking to avoid an enemy, or cranking to open a door -- we’ll be completely fine. Of course, Bungie is a great studio: we shouldn’t sweat it.

Ryan’s statement wasn’t a confirmation; so don’t take Natal-plus-Reach to the bank. But we can dream our beautiful gesture dreams. What would you guys like to do in Halo with the might of Project Natal behind it?

Natal = Guncon? That might be cool. And Guncons are hardcore. I guess? Still, Halo rails shooter wouldn't be bad.

You guys are so lame, "gesturing for grenades", pfft, the Wii did it from day one, now x360 wants you to throw a phantom grenade and stand with your arms in front of the tv and suddenly it is cool to do motion again.

LAME.

Makes me wonder what kind of game Halo Reach is going to be. I'm kinda hoping that it branches out like ODST is supposed to be doing. Speaking of which, when's that thing coming out again?

An FPS on the Natal? Sorry, I don't see it working so well.

One of the advantages of an analog stick or, preferably, a mouse is that you can rotate the camera around relatively easily. How would you do this with Natal? twisting my upper body would get annoying after awhile, especially since I would have to keep my eyes on the screen the whole time so a baddie doesn't kick my ass while I'm trying to turn around.

One thing that could be cool would be head tracking, like Johnny Lee showed was possible with the Wii.

I hope to god its a menu-only thing or you can turm it off and you the controller because I play video games to relax, not work out.

Halo rail shooter? Gesture based meleeing? I don't know what to make of it.

I'm with the people who don't think that motion controls, especially natal since the motion is done with your body, are capable of producing great FPS games. The entire FPS genre is based upon lightening quick precise movements, and even the slightest bit of movement lag can make an otherwise good FPS feel clunky and terrible. It's the reason there are no good FPS games for the Wii. The controls, because of that momentary lag, simply don't allow for good multiplayer.

Okay, apparently I'm the only one who's had this thought, because I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere.

Natal's lasting legacy won't be motion controls, which are lame, but in enabling stunning 3D with head-tracking. You can still hold and use a normal controller with Natal, and allow Natal to simulate real 3D. This is great because 1) this can be an optional feature, so games are marketable to people without Natal, 2) because it does not alienate the core gamer, 3) because, as Johnny Lee's Wii demo has shown, this effect looks freaking amazing. Imagine, if you will, being able to peek around corners in an FPS by actually moving your head.

And that, my friends, is what Natal will be used for.

I'm surprised and disgusted that we're 17 comments in and NO-ONE has mentioned tea-bag gesturing.

Also, MotoRobo, this isn't 4chan. Don't be a little bitch.

@Dexter345, That I feel is what they would most likely do if they implemented the natal software into Halo Reach.
Head track would really just locate how look around in the game, and I honestly feel that you would be more involved with the game.

Most people see Project Natal as jumping around like wollys, Seriously guys that isnt the case. ^^

I wouldn't make too much of it, I read this more as bungie being supportive and not raining on MS parade than some sort of actual interest.

I'm with Zeno and I'm surprised it took somebody so long to mention what he did. Everyone before him was imagining what Halo would be like on the Wii basically. Natal (hopefully) will allow for something more and if they include what Zeno suggested in Reach, it would provide actual incentive for me to play the game.

You are all BLIND! there is only one use for NATAL when it comes to halo... real-time motion-controled 1 to 1 perfect TEABAGGING!

So what are you going to have to hold 2 controllers at once. Or that dumb little wii stick with a meatball?

They won't actually do it.

Like what Knives said, I think this is just Bungie being supportive rather than them confirming that Reach will use Natal (Which I don't think it will).
