Halo people snap up Kojima Productions composer photo

There's a good possibility of some great music coming to the Halo world.

A tweet from the HaloWaypoint Twitter account this morning dropped some interesting information:

We're excited to announce our newest member of the 343 family, Audio Director, Sotaro Tojima from Kojima Productions!

Nice. Tojima is a badass, and has previously worked on some of the best sounding games in the business, including Metal Gear Solid 4, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and many more. I don't know how they landed the composer/sound designer, but I do know it was a good move. Konami games are known for their amazing sound. Halo games? There's that one overplayed theme, and that's it.

I can't wait to see hear what they are working on.

Castlevania music is badass. Halo music is badass. Therefore...I'm happy.

Sorry, but nothing can rival Martin O'Donnell, even if it is excellent by gaming standards.

Nice. I thought ODST sounded good but all other Haloez sound the same for the most part.

I have bashed Halo enough today, so here comes a real question: What is Halo Waypoint, again?

True that. ODST actually did a decent job with the music. If anything, they need some different sound effects work. Hire a good foley guy or something. I imagine that Tojima will have his hand in the sound effect work too, so hopefully we'll see some improvement there.

I agree with Socialnorms, the halo soundtracks composed by Marty have been phenomenal. The idea that halo only has "that one overplayed theme, and that's it" is laughable.

Tojima is composing music, not designing sound environment.
What I mean by that is he is a composer, not a sound designer, which are very very different
But yes they should try other people for their sound in general, thought Martin O'Donnell is very excellent, and I hope to see coop between Tojima and O'Donnell, could be real sweet

"There's a good possibility of some great music coming to the Halo world."

As if Marty hasn't already composed a bunch of great music for the games? Halo 3's original soundtrack is easily some of the best in the industry. And it's definitely more than "one overplayed theme". Almost every other game's soundtrack is extremely forgettable in comparison.

To be fair guys Dale doesn't strike me as a Halo guy and I can see how if you're not into it you might just see the one theme.

Personally I just think they all mesh together. Not neccesarily bad for consistencies sake but I think ODST proved you can take the Gregorian sound of Halo and do some new things with it.

Personally I'm curious as to whether this hiring is more geared towards their new IP than Halo.

Really Dale? REALLY? "That one overplayed theme and that's it"? REALLY? Go pick up ODST's soundtrack. That statement is so incredibly ignorant it's not even funny, its truly sad. Martin O'Donnell is the greatest composer in the industry BAR NONE. Listen to his work before you judge. I'm disgusted that you would write such an ignorant comment.

Halo's music doesn't get enough credit on it's own. Really, it doesn't. Regardless, if you can somehow combine that with MGS4's musical greatness then I think the world itself might implode.

The music is the best thing about Halo, IMO. I don't care much for the games, but I love the soundtracks. Here I was thinking most people agreed that the music in Halo was pretty fantastic.

@wh1terav3n, personally I'd give that title to Jeremy Soule.

That little snark about the Halo soundtrack is the sort of thing I'd expect to see buried away in the comments section by some ignorant fanboy. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to see on the front page.

Credibility ftl.

I think it's a tie between Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori, Jeremy Soule, and whoever it is that did the chocobo song from Final Fantasy.

It's one thing not to like Halo. Most destructoid writers obviously don't, we all get it, and really, it's fine. But such an ignorant statement, downplaying the entire work of a very talented soundtrack composer, simply comes off extremely arrogant.

While Tojima is certainly amazing, Bungie didn't need him to create epic music. They did plenty fine with the score in Halo 2, still one of my favorite game scores ever (even if I hated the game).

Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and Halo have some of the best tunes in the industry. Castlevania especially is great exercise music; it gets you pumped.
I'm excited to see what this will entail.

We often hear about MGS/FF music composers, but there are many more out there who have accomplished outstanding work. For one, I just thought about how awesome the music in Mario Galaxy was... who did that, I wonder? The orchestra felt so... grand! Like space! ^^

"why would you want to replace him/reduce his work to nothing?"

Reading the article will show you that the Konami Composer is being hired by 343 Studuios, not Bungie. They'll be making Halo games when Bungie have moved on after Reach. So Marty's work on Halo would be reduced to nothing anyways, as he'll be presumably doing other stuff with Bungie.

This is fantastic news; for me, it's the first sign that Microsoft is actually taking Halo semi-seriously. 343 Studios worried me as I figured we'd be seeing crap like "Master Chief Kart Racing" or "Covenant Tennis XBLA". Hiring a fantastic composer is a sign that they're at least willing to hire talent.

Woooooooow, I know it's cool to hate Halo here on Dtoid, but I've never read something more ignorant in my life. No offense Dale, I like your posts usually, but that was just straight-up fucking arrogant. Even Halo haters (Some in this very post) agree that Halo has some of the best soundtrack work in gaming. ODST was beautiful, and and example of how game music can hang with the best movie soundtracks. Like, damn dude, that was a cheap-shot at arguably one of the better games when it comes to sound, period.

You know, if you listen to his work, there's obviously more than just that theme song. Do work Dtoid, do work.

I dunno, I think Halo has a very distinctive audio profile. Whether you like them or not, you can't argue the fact that every Halo game sounds like a Halo game, can you?

Dale: in the quoted tweet, it says Tojima is an "audio director," not a composer. Though he may be working on some music for Halo Waypoint and related projects, the tweet makes it seem as though he's working on more than just music. Or am I wrong?

Whatever the case, I'm pleased for the Halo people. Kojima Productions does some of the best audio work in the business, musical or otherwise.

Are you serious? Marty O'Donnell is a great composer and has done some excellent work for Bungie. The music is the only thing that has been consistently amazing throughout the series, and that's because he's been there since Halo:CE.

The "main theme" is used extensively in promotional material (perhaps that is where you got this notion?), but the music during gameplay is anything but repetitive.

With the release of ODST, making a statement like "there's that one overplayed theme, and that's it" is nothing short of ignorant. I strongly encourage you to listen to the soundtrack, it's really fantastic.
