Halo-obsessed parent killer found guilty, videogame defense thrown out photo

A while ago we talked about Daniel Petric, an Ohio teen who shot his mother dead and injured his father after being banned from playing Halo. His lawyers attempted the famous (and absurd) videogame defense -- blaming game obsession on the attack. Petric was found guilty, his game defense having been ruled out by the judge.

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge ruled that game addiction was no defense, and that evidence of premeditation was clear. This also shoots down the defense's claim that this was a moment of madness, not something Petric had planned to do.

Since the videogame defense is being recognized more and more as something that can lessen the accountability of a criminal, it's always good to know that not every judge in America is going to fall for such nonsense.

I'm so glad there is some sense in our society. People need to take responsibility for their actions. Jeez...

Having followed this story, as it is in my neck of the woods and our paper will be having a nice big front page story on this tomorrow, this kid was lying the whole time. He knew damn well what he did and hid behind Halo 3 as an excuse.

Good. It's only fair for the awful crime he committed. Too bad they didn't just get him psychiatric help like he obviously needed instead of ignoring him.

This is what I never get, if an FPS is supposed to make people mimic what they see, why do they never go out and shoot aliens, or mutants, or whatever the hell it is that you do in Halo? In what video game has killing your parents ever been an objective? Okay, maybe Metal Gear, but....

What the hell was his lawyer thinking. He should have just plead not guilty by insanity to begin with, not this videogame addiction, temporary insanity bullshit.

glad he got what he deserved!

I'm starting to have faith again in the US-justice-system...

Prolly the judge was like "hmm my son plays Halo as well, so if I let this one go, it will be a valid excuse if he kills me... Oh nooo!" :-p

Un-fucking-believable. Is it the steroids in Beef or what?
Hope he gets tortured/raped/killed in prison.
Thank the judge for not buying the temporary-insanity bullshit (which is bollocks anyway).

Don't I recall that he was also playing Halo 1 and not Halo 3? I thought I read that somewhere in a related article. If so.. yeesh. Not worth it dude.

"i think they should take him, and put him 'To asleep'"

Nope. That's the easy way out. Let him rot in prison for life. That's a much worse fate. Getting butt raped for years, the confined spaces, the loneliness.

But you'd rather he just escape all of that and just go to sleep? If I were in his shoes I'd rather just die.
