Ain't It Cool News bring us word that Wingnut Films (aka Peter Jackson's studio) just issued a press release stating that due to all the issues it has been having lately, both Wingnut and Microsoft have
mutually decided to postpone the Halo movie, for real this time. Up until now it was merely having issues, and they were still fully committed to the project, but it is now dead.
Not only is this terrible news for fans of the
Halo franchise, it's a blow to gamers everywhere as this was a video game movie that had great potential to actually be a good movie. With the depth of the
Halo backstory and a talented, non-Boll director behind it, this could have been a sci-fi epic on par with
Aliens or
Star Wars.
Sadly, as is all too often the case in Hollywood, money got in the way of what could have been a truly great movie. I wouldn't be surprised if the abysmal video game movies of the past clouded the judgement of the higher ups at Universal and Fox (who probably couldn't tell the Master Chief from the
Swedish Chef), and for that, I don't blame them. Movies based on games have become a joke amongst gamers as well as the general public.
Here's to hoping that the kinks get worked out and we get to see the Master Chief cappin' aliens in a movie theater some time soon.
