Halo film not dead yet -- Microsoft searching for new partners photo

Halo: It's the film that just won't stay down. After falling out with Fox and Universal over making the Halo film, Peter Jackson's representative, Ken Kamins, says that Microsoft is already in talks with other "distrobution projects" in order to release the Halo film. CVG tells us that even though the talks had been off, pre-production work was still going on:

Prep work on the Halo film continues, Kamins tells Variety, mostly thanks to the involvement of exec producers Jackson and Walsh. Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stalling.

The whole reason for the fallout with Fox and Universal was that Microsoft wanted too much money up front for the project, and a large amount at the back-end, and Universal held a meeting trying to re-negotiate the deal at the last minute, so MS dropped them. It's less than appealing, but that's how Hollywood can be.

There's no word as to who the new companies they're talking with are, but Microsoft could certainly fund the project themselves. I mean, c'mon, it's only going to cost $50 million or so. And that's just if you're lowballing it.

I would love to see a movie done in the same style as the MNF commercial.

....Perhaps...there might just be hope for a small chance that it will actually happen...and an even smaller one that it will be good.

I told you guys this in the last post about the movie. Bungie openly stated that the film wasn't absolutely dead and that Blomkapfurterzeig only meant that the film was dead on the studios' end. I'm sure it'll happen.

having new zealand's greatest son as the backbone of the project definitely inspires some confidence, but which area of halo would they cover in the movie? I certainly don't need a rehash of any of the games, considering their plots were less than impressive (halo 1 was fine). maybe pick up with him landing on that planet at the end of halo 3.

The early Halo commercials looked good. Maybe they should consider making it CG. RE is going to do it. It seems the most logical choice when dealing with something like this.

Yeah, they'd be stupid to leave it dead now.

I want to get my hopes up but WETA is STILL doing pre-production on the Evangelion movies years after starting. To their credit though, Halo is a lot more bankable and any studio would have to be bonkers to not make it

I believe this is the Variety article mentioned, and it's from Oct. 19, 2006. Someone at CVG needs to check the dates before posting this stuff.

Why the hell doesn't Microsoft just put up some dough? They know they'll make a ton of revenue off it anyway. That way they can negotiate for more when they make the inevitable sequels.

@MechaMonkey

Microsoft Film Studios? Why not? Sony's doing it.

I have my hopes set in the "meh" range. The live action films got progressively cooler. I enjoyed the last one (although the CG needed a bit more work).

Hopefully they'll keep the director of those short live-action promos. He knows what he's doing.

The real reason is that if fox had produced it then Halo 3 would have been a Blu Ray exclusive........OH NOES!!!!

We had a visiting artist from Weta Digital come last month and talk and he talked about the movie a bit. He said the reason its on the bookshelf atm is not because of money, the whole issue is over the director. That Peter Jackson wouldn't budge on the issue when the studios wanted a different director. It was his way or the highway and so the studios choose the highway. Also that Weta Digital had nothing to do with the live action commercials, all the Workshop people. He said the preproduction is a lot farther along that people think and no one's seen any of it yet.

Just saw that post about Evangelion. He also mentioned it, said the only thing holding it back from happening is no studio wants to back it. But everything they've done is sitting on a shelf waiting to go.

I don't get why anyone would watch Halo the movie. We know what happens. Hollywood will just remake the cinematics, put in a few special effects (like a slow mo bullet or two), then call it a day.

Halo's story line isn't even interesting.

Its bound to happen sooner or later, M$ just dont know when to let a shitty idea go. It will only turn out bad cause every fanboi will have it hyped so high that it will be shit to them no matter how good/bad it is. I bet they give you Halo theamed Moutain dew and halo condoms when you buy the ticket. Cant market this shit enough for halo fanboi assholes.

Coming soon: "Halo Tampons" fight the flood. indeed... <.<

Even though I don't care for Halo 1 or 2, and haven't even thought of picking up 3 (probably won't, too many damn games out that I still haven't gotten), I'd love to see the movie come out. Halo the story arc was what kept me from turning it off at all the repetitive areas of the games.... and I believe the story will shine in movie-form.

This should have been filed under Captain Obvious.
And to the people who say that halo's story sucks you're just jealous half-life fanboys.
it's not he best story in the world but it's still pretty awesome deal with it.
Also, i'm not saying half-life is bad i'm just saying fanboys are stupid.
