Killzone 2's lifetime US sales figure has been revealed, and while the PS3 exclusive has had a respectable performance, it appears to have failed to make the same strides as Xbox 360 exclusive Halo 3, even today. Unable to crack a million sales, Killzone 2 has so far shifted 677,000 units. Not bad, but not brilliant.
The game did have a very solid start. Despite launching considerably late in February, the game still charted at number 5, selling 323,000 units. The game dropped to number 7 in March, shifting 296,000 copies. Killzone 2 was proclaimed by Sony to be its fastest-selling US title, but apparently those fast sales have not translated into a long-term thing.
It's a shame because Killzone 2 really is an excellent game. While it's had a solid sales performance, such a high profile title could and should have done much better, especially with years of development and 40 million euro having been invested in the thing.
OXM is using the news to suggest that Halo 3 has outperformed Killzone 2, and dropped this rather amazing quote: "It's a comforting sight for Xbox 360 owners to see that 20 months on and despite its advanced age, Halo 3 outselling Killzone 2, which has been out since February this year."
Are you comforted by this thought? If so, what does it take for a rational human being to feel comfort from the fact that a game on their preferred system is doing better than a game on the system they don't like as much? Have fanboys truly become that demented? If the thought of Halo 3 outselling KZ2 has actually made you breathe a sigh of relief, let me know. I've always wanted to meet a psychopath.
Fanboys...
You should look at percentage of userbase not overall sales. I'd imagine they'd be pretty equal.
It's like saying DVD's are outselling Blu-rays (actually a lot like it) because EVERYONE and their fucking dog have a DVD player, you can get them for £10 for fuck sake, but only those who want to invest in future tech have blu-ray players.
It's about as level a playing field as fucking everest.
but they're both first person shooters, so that isn't saying much. it's the fact you're playing it on a ps3 or a 360, that makes the difference
out before the wahbulance comes
All I care is that the game sells enough to make a sequal, because the game was absolutely incredible.
Awhile back there was all this talk of gaming being a recession proof industry, which may well be the case on the whole, but not on my planet. At sixty bucks a pop, it's hard to justify. Think of how many delicious sandwiches that money can buy. Delicious, smokeable sandwiches.
@ SilverDragon1979
I blame Ron for that.
I love offical magazines, there always so bitchy about each others consoles. I still need to pick up killzone 2, been putting it off so that I could finish this year of university undistracted. Now its time to kill some helghast.
Also, to all the people who complain about annoying kids in Halo. Just start an XBox Live party and invite nobody, instamute!
I know which I'd rather play online, and it ain't Halo. Halo's an example of a fine franchise ruined by its fanbase.
And before the CONSOLE WARZ jackoffs start in commenting in force...
*begin rant:
If I hear one more person dumbassedly saying "THE PS3 IS THE FUTURE IT HAZ BRURAYZ, 360 IS OUTDATED SHITTY DVDZ FOR GAYLO KIDZ LOLZORZ", I'm going to lose what's left of my fucking mind!
IF YOU ONLY WANT ONE CONSOLE, FINE. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER, I'M SORRY.
EITHER WAY STFU ABOUT IT FFS!!!
I can't understand how some people only want to talk about shit they supposedly hate and not what they enjoy, it's fucking pathetic. Whiney-ass bitches. Seriously, just stop playing games as you fail to get their point.
*end rant, god dammit (and yes, potential smartasses, I see the irony of bitching about bitching, but come on, the shit is retarded. How many comments with newb avatars posting nonsense do you think we'll see here, hmm? EXACTLY.)
To make everything fair, you should see how Halo 3 did 3 months after release and compare it to KZ2 now.
To make things even MORE fair, you should take the 3 month sales figures of Halo 3 divide them by the estimated numbers of Xbox 360s in the country to create a percentage of Halo 3 Ownership out of all Xbox 360s. Then do the same with KZ2. This would give a better representation of which game is exciting the base more.
Personally, I suck at FPS and really care about RPGs, which the 360 was strong on out of the gate but the PS3 is looking to turn things around now. If the RPG winds blow the other way then maybe I'll trade my 360 in. But as someone currently invested in a 360 I don't want to see anymore Valkyria Chronicles, that is, great games that I can't play because they are PS3 exclusive. And if a cross platform RPG sells better for the 360 for the US means a greater chance of games there were going to be PS3 exclusive coming to the 360, then that is, at the very least, comforting, because then I get to play it.
I can assure you there are 7th graders with higher IQs than graduate students. IQ is a measure of your ability to learn, not a measure of what you know.
Like I said, I don't really care, but it sure as hell looks like Sonychocolate does. Another stupid rant from our resident - frothing at the mouth - Sony fanboy.
Besides the 360 controller > PS controller </flamebait>
Currently Amazon list Killzone 2 at 48 on their Top 100 games and Halo 3 right behind it at 49.
and
According to vgchartz.com using the weekly compare tool Halo 3 significantly has outsold Killzone 2 each week from release (when comparing week 1 to week 1 sales and week 2 to week 2 sales etc..).
I think the point being made here with OXM's quote is, Halo 3 which was released a long time ago is selling equally well or better than Killzone 2 which is only a few months old. Trying to make "exciting the base" comparisons is pretty lame since excitement per console percentage does not equate to dollars (or euros) profit. Games must sell exceptionally well to recoup the incredible expenses now associated with blockbuster games. Halo 3 has clearly done that while Killzone 2 has not, regardless of your like/dislike of the two games in question.
@ Tha Meat
I'm having the same problem trying to find VC as well.
That aint flamebait - that's just cold hard facts. PS controllers are icky, man. A triumph of design in their time, but they feel old fashioned, and pointy now. Palm blisters are soooo 98, man.
That's flamebait. I still love the PS3 controller over the 360 controller for anything that isnt a first person shooter. Seriously, would YOU want to play street fighter on that terrible 360 setup?
So with that said, I'm not surprised by the sales numbers. It doesn't matter which game was better, what creates sales numbers is marketing.
Wow, I'm impressed by this comment. But, to answer your last question, no, fanboys have not become that demented, they've always been that demented.
Really, what's it to you if Halo 3 sold more? Are you going to get a bigger penis or more women because you like Halo 3?
Or Killzone 2?
Really, kids have no need to wallow in pointless crap like sales figures. If sales figures mattered in the long term, REZ, Ico, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Sin and Punishment, and thousands of other stellar (but underwhelming sales figures) games would go completely unnoticed.
Lucky me though, I'm above petty, baby shit like sales figures.
I know Its been quiet on the 360 front cause I'm dying for a new 360 game...But this is like wanking yourself over gran turismo having sold more then forza...
Can't we all just play the games instead of thinking up this whole soap opera for the teenage virgins who didn't meet the opposite sex yet?
Imo the only good halo game was the first one anyway...
Also, it's FACT to say the 360's controller is better designed than the PS3's except for the d-pad. Offset analog sticks and more ergonomic handles are what give it the edge. You might be used to the Dualshock, but it doesn't mean it's better.
