Halo 3 outselling Killzone 2? Sales data not looking great photo

Killzone 2's lifetime US sales figure has been revealed, and while the PS3 exclusive has had a respectable performance, it appears to have failed to make the same strides as Xbox 360 exclusive Halo 3, even today. Unable to crack a million sales, Killzone 2 has so far shifted 677,000 units. Not bad, but not brilliant.

The game did have a very solid start. Despite launching considerably late in February, the game still charted at number 5, selling 323,000 units. The game dropped to number 7 in March, shifting 296,000 copies. Killzone 2 was proclaimed by Sony to be its fastest-selling US title, but apparently those fast sales have not translated into a long-term thing.

It's a shame because Killzone 2 really is an excellent game. While it's had a solid sales performance, such a high profile title could and should have done much better, especially with years of development and 40 million euro having been invested in the thing.

OXM is using the news to suggest that Halo 3 has outperformed Killzone 2, and dropped this rather amazing quote: "It's a comforting sight for Xbox 360 owners to see that 20 months on and despite its advanced age, Halo 3 outselling Killzone 2, which has been out since February this year."

Are you comforted by this thought? If so, what does it take for a rational human being to feel comfort from the fact that a game on their preferred system is doing better than a game on the system they don't like as much? Have fanboys truly become that demented? If the thought of Halo 3 outselling KZ2 has actually made you breathe a sigh of relief, let me know. I've always wanted to meet a psychopath.

Well OXM can keep enjoying Halo 3 while everyone else enjoys all of the PS3 exclusives this year.

So OXM is paying mentally-retarded children to hype up a two years old game in an effort to kiss microsoft's ass?

It certainly helps software sales figures to have a BILLION kids owning your cheap ass console M$, wait for it, wait for it, bought by their welfare scrounging parents! "Mummy buy me Wanko 3 mummy buy me wanko 3" "OK, if it'll keep you quiet and means i don't have to actually bring you up myself!"

You should look at percentage of userbase not overall sales. I'd imagine they'd be pretty equal.

It's like saying DVD's are outselling Blu-rays (actually a lot like it) because EVERYONE and their fucking dog have a DVD player, you can get them for £10 for fuck sake, but only those who want to invest in future tech have blu-ray players.

It's about as level a playing field as fucking everest.

I was worried because I heard if Killzone 2 sold more, the helghast would show up in Halo 3's matchmaking and shut it all down.

The only time I care about sales is if the game didn't sell enough to warrent a sequel. After it hits the million mark I really stop caring.

Even if they're equal in terms of percentage of userbase, it still means that KZ2 made significantly less money than Halo 3 made. Considering the development costs listed in the article, it looks like KZ2 has a ways to go before breaking even.

I still think Killzone is a way better game. Halo is for kids. Killzone is for adults. Whenever I get online with Killzone I never have immature kids screaming in my ears.

but they're both first person shooters, so that isn't saying much. it's the fact you're playing it on a ps3 or a 360, that makes the difference

@Jack of No Trades: You are right that when you play Killzone 2 you don't have immature kids screaming in your ears. Instead you have immature adults and college students screaming in your ear. I really don't think one is better then the other. Both situation suck in my opinion.

All I care is that the game sells enough to make a sequal, because the game was absolutely incredible.

I'm an avid gamer and blatant ps3 fanboy. Want to know why I haven't bought Killzone? Recession, people. I've got to do for me and mine!

Awhile back there was all this talk of gaming being a recession proof industry, which may well be the case on the whole, but not on my planet. At sixty bucks a pop, it's hard to justify. Think of how many delicious sandwiches that money can buy. Delicious, smokeable sandwiches.

I'm confused on the actual comparison. Did Halo 3 outsell Killzone 2 last month, or are they comparing lifetime sales? If the latter, well no shit, OXM. An dew-ad-pocalypse and two years are going to put you ahead of a game that's been out for two and a half months. If they just mean last month, neither Halo or KZ are in the top 20 so I can't see the numbers to comment, but I find it somewhat unlikely; Killzone is still pretty new, but who the hell is still buying Halo?

@ SilverDragon1979
I blame Ron for that.

@kavorka: they say that gaming is a recession proof industry because its an escapist pursuit, ala movies which wasn't affected at all by the great depression. Anything that can take your mind off the terrible economy is a good thing I suppose, then again I've yet to see any major consequences from this so called recession other than businesses that were going to die being killed off early.

I love offical magazines, there always so bitchy about each others consoles. I still need to pick up killzone 2, been putting it off so that I could finish this year of university undistracted. Now its time to kill some helghast.

It's a ludicrous notion to believe that a game that came out in February of 2009 would be able to compete with the numbers of a game that's been out for almost two years. That's like asking if a 7th grade student's IQ is higher then a graduate student's.

To make everything fair, you should see how Halo 3 did 3 months after release and compare it to KZ2 now.

To make things even MORE fair, you should take the 3 month sales figures of Halo 3 divide them by the estimated numbers of Xbox 360s in the country to create a percentage of Halo 3 Ownership out of all Xbox 360s. Then do the same with KZ2. This would give a better representation of which game is exciting the base more.

The "recession proof" thing makes me laugh. Video games and movies are in a constant state of uncertainty! How many very successful game studios shut down last year? The year before that? In the best of economic times, the games industry is full of bad economic practices, over-reaching, and publishers busting up studios because they feel like it. If video games or films are recession proof, it's only because no one can tell the difference from the status quo.

Well I can't say I am comforted by this but there are plenty of non-fanboy related reasons to think of this as positive if you are a 360 owner. When a game for the 360 performs better than for the PS3 the developers notice that, and that means they will be more likely to bring more games, at least of this genre, to the 360 in the future. I don't really care if the PS3 performs poorly or well but as a 360 owner I do want the largest library of games to choose from as possible. Right now I cannot afford both consoles, and if the 360 performing better means a greater chance of games for the 360, whether they be exclusive or cross-platform I am all for that.

Personally, I suck at FPS and really care about RPGs, which the 360 was strong on out of the gate but the PS3 is looking to turn things around now. If the RPG winds blow the other way then maybe I'll trade my 360 in. But as someone currently invested in a 360 I don't want to see anymore Valkyria Chronicles, that is, great games that I can't play because they are PS3 exclusive. And if a cross platform RPG sells better for the 360 for the US means a greater chance of games there were going to be PS3 exclusive coming to the 360, then that is, at the very least, comforting, because then I get to play it.

Doing a little extra research I came across two interesting items when comparing Killzone 2 sales to Halo 3.

Currently Amazon list Killzone 2 at 48 on their Top 100 games and Halo 3 right behind it at 49.

and

According to vgchartz.com using the weekly compare tool Halo 3 significantly has outsold Killzone 2 each week from release (when comparing week 1 to week 1 sales and week 2 to week 2 sales etc..).

I think the point being made here with OXM's quote is, Halo 3 which was released a long time ago is selling equally well or better than Killzone 2 which is only a few months old. Trying to make "exciting the base" comparisons is pretty lame since excitement per console percentage does not equate to dollars (or euros) profit. Games must sell exceptionally well to recoup the incredible expenses now associated with blockbuster games. Halo 3 has clearly done that while Killzone 2 has not, regardless of your like/dislike of the two games in question.

I'm not surprised about this at all. Just compare the two games' marketing campaigns. Sony hardly did anything to let people know what a Killzone is. No one cared about the first one, so why would they care about the second one? Microsoft on the other hand made sure that as long as you have eyes or ears, that you knew who and what Master Chief is. I mean, they fucking had a Mountain Dew drink after him, that game was hyped up to be bigger than Jesus Christ's second coming.
So with that said, I'm not surprised by the sales numbers. It doesn't matter which game was better, what creates sales numbers is marketing.

Ok, fair enough - it's preference and gamestyle related. Sure. I cannot stand fighting games, and so there are literally NO instances where I would prefer the PS controller, which are clearly designed with Japs in mind. Anyone whose hand is over 13cm in length is going to have clashing thumb issues when using the analogue sticks. But aside from that, I can see that people like what they know, and having no love for any of the Playstations (I had a PSone for about 6 months, but hated it, and never went near the PS2) means I have no attachment to the arcane design of the PS controller. But having played PS3 quite a bit with my friend's system, everytime I do I'm struck at just how nasty the PS controller feels in my hands. It's literally too 'edgy'. I don't think that saying the MS controller is better (excluding D-pad) is flamebait, as the design has clearly taken what's best about the PS controller, and evolved it into a more comfortable experience. From a design point of view, with the brief to evolve the controller experience in general, I'd say they achieved (ba-ding) that quite comfortably. I was shocked, along with a lot of gamer friends, that Sony did not evolve their controllers when bringing out the PS3. No-one can deny the annoyance of palm-blisters, and hell, there is even a medical condition that has fucking 'playstation' in its title, though the full name escapes me now.

Really, what's it to you if Halo 3 sold more? Are you going to get a bigger penis or more women because you like Halo 3?

Or Killzone 2?

Really, kids have no need to wallow in pointless crap like sales figures. If sales figures mattered in the long term, REZ, Ico, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Sin and Punishment, and thousands of other stellar (but underwhelming sales figures) games would go completely unnoticed.

Lucky me though, I'm above petty, baby shit like sales figures.

Also, it's FACT to say the 360's controller is better designed than the PS3's except for the d-pad. Offset analog sticks and more ergonomic handles are what give it the edge. You might be used to the Dualshock, but it doesn't mean it's better.
