Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Last week, our friend Flynn DeMarco over at Gaygamer.net told me about this video that one of his readers had submitted, and while I expected it to be bad, I didn't expect that it would be quite this bad.

The aforementioned reader decided to create the gamertag "xxx GayBoy xxx" and jump into a game of Halo 3 to see what would happen. Given the nature of Xbox Live, it should come as no shock that the audio in the above vid is NSFW, but considering that none of these goons knew they were being recorded, the subsequent chatter ends up just NSF anybody. I'm straight as can be and I'm still horribly offended by it, so I can't imagine what kind of disgust the gay gaming community must be feeling right about now.

Upon receiving the video, Flynn contacted its creator with a few questions. Hit the jump to see what he had to say about the whole experience.

When contacted, "xxx GayBoy xxx" had this to say:

Other than maybe a quick "hello" to the chat room or a request to "veto", I didn't ever say anything first or taunt anyone. What was said by these players was initiated by them with no provocation on my part. The vast majority of the times I wouldn't even respond back so the audio would be clear.

I had a lot more footage but the movie would have been a lot longer and I don’t have the time to edit all that. One thing you don’t see are the betrayals, I was shot by my own teammates. Most don’t want to party up with me, they even say "gayboy don’t party up", some even leave mid-game so they don’t have to play with me.

Flynn DeMarco follows up the original post on Gaygamer.net by saying:

Back when we were hacked, the story got around to various websites and the one question that many uninformed readers asked was "Why does there need to be a gay gaming website? Can't we all just be gamers? Why do they have to segregate themselves?" I think one viewing of this video will explain exactly why.

The whole thing just solidifies my preference for staying wihin my own friends list when I'm looking for some online play. It would be nice if Microsoft would add to their list of play zones on the XBL Gamer Profile (Pro, Underground, etc.) with a category for "Douchebag" so some of these guys' gamercards would be a little more accurate. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Flynn.

Friend Codes +1

...ehm... Actually, I still think they are pretty long and is kind of stupid to have One Friend Code for each game but at least you don't find people like this in your games.

Well, besides all the penises and nazi symbols in Mario Kart DS...

You missed the whole point of my comment. Sexual orientation has no place in gaming. He and other gays would not have any problems if they didn't flaunt the fact that they were gay. Don't give me that crap about their speach either. There is no biological change that occurs when someone decides to come out of the closet that makes they have a gay lisp. That is just another way of flaunting and asking for attention whether positive or negative.

On another note, I do not condone the people who were being hateful, I just feel that he was asking for it (expecting it as well by setting up a recording device). What he did not include are the positive interactions he had as well.

Wow, I've never felt the urge to bring my sexuality into my gaming tag.
But bein a dude who's kissed dudes, shit like this makes me sick. Not those who made jokes, but those who really spread hate.

I had something kinda close happen to me when I first got on to Live. I have a Japanese gamertag, though I am American. I didn't have a mic yet, but I just got Gears of War. I had heard how great the online was and really wanted to try it. I was meet with some of the rudest xenophobia. Everyone was trying their hardest to rag on me. Of course, I couldn't respond to point out their stupidity and that made it worse. I tried a couple of rooms and pretty much encountered the same thing. The combo of being new at the game and the Japanese GT made a huge target. It was really sad. I haven't been back on. Partly because of that, partly becasue I moved on to other games. I felt like shit having to listen to those jerk offs slam me for being something I wasn't. I couldn't imagine being insulted for something I am.

Yet if you look at Dtoid, tons of people have pictures of boobs or hot chicks as their avatars, a lot of people's blogs and profiles have ass shots and talk of having sex with significant others, and even a number of front page stories (For example, the Hot Men article that Faith put up) have to do with people "flaunting" their sexuality or bringing it into gaming. Hell, Dtoid even has a special forum tag for girls that says "I've seen her boobies." People go out of their way to talk about how much they like girls and boobs, why is it so offensive if a gay person happens to mention they're gay?

It goes both ways. That is why I mentioned what I don't do as far as my gamer tag in my previous comment(I would not get the grief however due to the majority) It is also true that a lot of games appeal to a sexual orientation but Halo is not one of them and it is one of the reasons that I don't buy games like Katamari or DOA.

I find it odd if these people really hated homosexuals, why did they bother to continue playing Halo with one? Personally I don't care for people talkin about who or what they are when it has nothing to do with any of my interest, however this just goes to show that faceless communication will let anyone speak whatever nonsense they want. This is not a reflection of how things are in a social setting because guaranteed if those dorks were at any event or any situation that had more couth or standards than a game of Halo 3, they would never open their mouths to say any shit towards anyone because they would sorely be outnumbered by those who would just say Man shut the fuck up idiot.

However...I will say this, it didn't sound like GayBoy was being anonymous with anything to do with his sexual preferences...plus it sounded like he was egging some people on at times. But you have to expect a name like that will cause people(in a leisurely situation) to attack and poke fun at it because again it's a low brow, low level, low responsibility/accountability situation for any of these guys who are just gettin off on competitive video games.

If the person's nickname was "XXX I AM A GIRL WHO LIKES PENIS XXX" do you think it would be left alone?

Here's an idea... if you don't want to get shit slung at you, don't fucking put anything remotely personal in your nickname.

You knew this would happen...so smarten up. You're gay sure, but extremely naive? FUCK YES.

Oh and btw... take your social tests somewhere not polluted by the most mindless of demographics ==XBOX LIVE...and yes this was a fucking test, don't think this wasn't a huge prompt to make it look like the world is hunting gay people...I for one have never seen any homosexual jumped or being beaten at all, let alone in any socially populated area that isn't shifty or shady... and personally I would help stop that because someone being pummeled has nothing to do with anal sex...which essentially is all male homosexual activity is apart from any heterosexual activity. Fucking christ get over it... so a guy digs another guy... you don't have to fuck either of them, so get over it!

I really wish those names were not blurred out. I suffer a similar problem though, I go into games and people automatically start to harass me for being a general... so fucking what I am better then you. The best though is when someone has a guest over and they have to act as my friend so perfectly put it....online tough guys. With nothing better to do or prove then run around on a video game and harass someone for whatever reason just to impress their little friends back home.

Homophobes are rubbish, and studies show that they're more likely to have homosexual tendencies than any other "straight" people. So they can fuck off.

Sadly I expect this thing when I play Halo games. When I first played Halo 3 online I was shit talked and tea bagged in the first game I played. It really felt like Halo. I will say that when people have names that stand out people often give them issues over it. My one friend used the name "AGoatOnAcid" in Halo 2. Nearly every single match, at least one person would say his name upon joining, many started talking shit immedately. I can only imagine how much worse it would be if you used the word gay in your name given the Madden-esque crowd's preference for Halo, because Halo is "cool" where as something like playing UT3/2004 or CS would be beneath them.

This is really depressing, and makes me glad I sold my copy of Halo 3 away.

Anyways, it may seem to be a purposeful egg on to have a tag like xxxgayboyxxx, but I feel that people shouldn't give a crap about what a person's gamertag is. It just goes to show how immature and retarded a lot of people on live are (as if nobody already knew). I never use the mic unless I'm playing with friends.

Oh and ill also say that despite its tendency to cause conflict and provoke people, I respect a tag like Gayboy a hell of a lot more than a name like XxXCMURDAHITMANMURDAMURDACASHMUNNYXxX319943. do people have any idea how hard that shit is to read on a 24 inch standard definition tv from 1993. Just put a pronounceable name please, no crazy number combinations, designs, or needless capitalization please.

Ok most of these guys sounded like assholes we can all agree on that. But some sounded kinda relaxed and just interested in it. Most guys will joke around with people. Me and my friends are straight and one of our friends was gay and we would always joke around like that with him, maybe not so crudely. I remember one time he was talking about cleaning and how it relaxes him like gardening, me and my friend just laughed and looked at him and said "Well yeah, your gay!" This is the attitude it seemed SOME of the guys in this video had, probably only a couple of them.

With the exception of a few guys that were simply making gay jokes, I love how the majority slandered GayBoy for the primary sake of provoking a reaction, and just ended up sounding retarded AND unfunny. Really, there isn't much humor to be found - and not at what they said, but how they said it. That kid who said gays are going to hell sounded really insecure, like he was thinking "Wow, I'm really going to get away with it!"

You sure did, Jimmy. You sure did.

xbox live is gay, and i'm addicted to it. american redneck homophobes are to blame for this, not halo.

racists are assholes but gaybashers on XBL tend to be funny and if you are gonna anonymously create a pink XXX GAYBOI XXX gamertag and talk like a queen and get yer fudge packed... joke character, or PR stunt from a primitive special interest group, in my opinion.

There is a difference between having fun and being straight mean, and I heard both in there. I laughed at some of the comments, but that's only because it would probably seem like a joke if someone actually created that gamertag to be serious.

For example, one time a guy by the name of Lil Boy Savior came into our room (his motto even said "I love you blanket"). We cracked Michael Jackson jokes the entire time and had a blast doing it.

I am very anti-gaybashing, but it's almost hard to take this particular situation seriously. It's a very blurry line there so it's hard not to expect people to cross it. The straight up hateful comments were just wrong, though, and I never approve of the word "fagot".

I'd like to start by saying that I'm disappointed in destructoid for posting this and expecting people to be sympathetic. I don't like gay people and I think everything about it is wrong. I don't think that this is the right place to bring this and expect everybody to be tolerant.

Second I think it's pretty shitty that this guy went out and recorded all of this. He asked for it by making that his gamertag and then acted like the victim.

Third, to all of you who said "this is why I don't play halo". Fuck off. Not everybody on live is like that and it not right to throw everybody in the same category. I stated before that I do not like gay people. Although this is true I would not have done what these guys did. I probably would have just left the game and kept my mouth shut. To make a comment that would make it seem that everybody who plays halo is an asshole is unfair.

Yeah, this is no surprise. Especially with Halo. Halo fans are fucking retarded majority of the time, this video is a perfectly good example. Of course, Live is filled with a bunch of tards that have never really played online outside of the 360, so you usually have to deal with a bunch of re-res.

Like Colette said, I'd honestly prefer to play with friends. Majority of the time when I play a random live game, it gets so annoying that I turn down the headset and take it off lol. Makes everything better.
