Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Thanks to the various people who sent this to me -- and Toneman who managed to put it up in his clog while I was busy sleeping -- the above video is a YouTube clip of the supposedly leaked ending to Bungie's upcoming Halo 3. Obviously it contains a truckload of spoilers so if you don't want to cry about how horribly I've ruined the experience of a game whose story has often been compared to the finest works of Hemingway and Steinbeck (by those who have an incredibly cruel grasp of sarcasm), do not press play, read the comments below, or log onto the Internet for the next week.

Then again, since Microsoft has an army of lawyers made of molten rock and pure hatred at their beck and call, I give the clip roughly six hours before it disappears into the ether. Enjoy it while you can!

[UPDATE: Backups now exist, so even if the YouTube clip is drowned in a flood of C&D orders, we'll still have it for you.]

Jesus Christ, that was an awful anti-climax of an ending. For shame on you Bungie, that's 3 games in the trilogy with terrible disappointments for endings.

Spoilers: The battle is concluded with an epic dance-off. Master Chief totally serves the Covenant, who slink off in retreat. Then Master Chief takes off his helmet and totally starts making out with the hologram of Cortana. It ends with all the Earth forces singing "We Are the Champions."

Can I get the cliff's notes? That video is horrible quality, and I don't feel like waiting 6 minutes to find out what it is. I want to start posting it to Halo fan boards immediately.

The Chief has to die. He was created just to fight. Once the war is over he has not place. So, he must die when the war is over.

Lol VGWTI.. I don't care what game it is. An ending isn't going to define if a game is worth buying or not. :P

Honestly, after 2 I didn't expect an amazing ending. I think their writers have issues with closing stories / wrapping it up. I mean it's pretty hard to make out the video but at the sametime I think the "important" tidbits were clear.

That was incredibly disappointing - and that's coming from someone who wasn't expecting much to begin with.

Of course, the clip above is totally devoid of context, so there's probably more to the ending than just that final cutscene. Too bad I'll never play Halo 3 to find out!

I love you D-Toid, but you won't see me again until late next week. I haven't click the video, I skipped all the comments, and I'd (gasp) like to see the ending in the context of playing the entire game.

This actually affects me very little since I enjoy the journey as much as the ending, and this vid provides almost no context (for me at least). I'm hoping that the actual game answers a lot more questions than the ending did (I'm sure it will).

Anyone care to enlighten me as to what they were doing a close up on during the last shot before the credits start to roll? The quality on the vid I could get to play was not so good. I saw the "in memory of those fallen..." but couldn't make out what the camera was focusing in on.

@ AngelsDontBurn

While usually it doesnt, I play Halo for the single player experience. It seems that the gameplay will be more of the same ol' so no reason for me to drop $60 on a game that I already own two copies of - Halo and Halo 2 respectively.

If the ending is that lame, I can save myself the trouble of finishing the fight.

I don't care about spoiling it...so after watching it I will say, I look forward to the flood of angry posts on September 26th when people start seeing the ending for themselves. That to me is way more entertaining than any ending could ever be.

People claiming he dies obviously have not grasped the concept of an ambiguous ending and the power of cash-cows and fanbase loyalty.

There is a fade to white explosion, and yeah, there is a funeral but its more like a mass death memorial, and someone scratched John 117 on the stone, but there is no body. So, in corproate speak, look forward to the new Bungie franchise: The Master Chief Chronicles!

Its a pathetically weak, you get a dumb "Maybe he dies, maybe he dont!" ending, a pat on the back for ending the war, move along now, nothing else to see.

Rumor has it the extra bit at the end thats not in the clip is MAster Chief and Cortana drifting through space and master Chief stepping into a cryo-chamber to freeze himself until they get rescued.

I hope not, that would make the ending even WORSE and the dollar-irises in Bungie-dev's eyes more obvious.

Says the guy with a Halo3 Avatar! :D Note we are comenting on the story, or rather the end of it, which everyone agrees is crap. The game could still be great though, and the things that happen in it (story-wise) as well, its jsut the conclusion thats a lame cop-out.

The Halo series is a perpetual second act... it will never end, and it will always leave you hanging. Bungie isn't a good story teller.
Book-Off's Avatar
Book-Off at 09/17/2007 09:34
Wow, I'm very suprised that this got leaked. Unless a) this is an elaborate dummy by bungie (they did have the money for that utterly ludicrous diorama nonsense) or b)this is a discarded first attempt at an ending and they've since re-rendered and scripted something new, then the story is finished for people like myself too curious to wait around. One comfort I take from this though is that in the first Halo the plot unfolded as you play in a very powerful and brilliant way. Half Life 2 is possibly the best example of this but Halo drew me whilst keeping the cut-scenes to a minimum. A pleasure to play. I hope Halo 3 will be the same in that tidbits are fed to the player as he smashes alien skulls with a B button.
Halo 2? I have no idea what was going on there. I just shot at things and occaisonally saw pre-rendered footage of the chief kicking a bomb in space, clutching an earth-bound shuttle in space. By the end I knew I'd won, but I wasn't sure what.
I think endings in videogames rarely if ever satisfy. Unlike other means of story telling, we bring so much of our own input to the story, that what the game makers decide is the end of game rarely live up to our unique expectations. Even if it's only pulling off a paticularly satisfying combo or using a strategy that annihilates the A.I competition, thanks to advances in the technology (and the ever-overactive human imagination) we can find pathos and plot in our actions more than the design team have the scope to depict.
Ocarina of time, for example, was a perfect journey, a wonderful videogame experience, but I felt the ending was lengthy, tedious and in general sucked eggs. Wind Waker's ending, on the other hand, was brilliant. The plot was explained to you as you battled through. By the time you'd stuck your sword into Ganon's forehead there was little else to say apart from "flood Hyrule".
I hope Halo 3 is the shiznit. I sincerely hope that the ending (whatever it turns out to be) is definitive and that the master chief horse is not flogged for whatever cash can be made (TIME TO MOVE ON, bungie). Inspite of all the bollocks, this is a solid, enjoyable first person shooter. For me though the inspirational moments were never the story, but using the limited resources to out-think and out-flank a bunch of elites.
One day there will be a really worthwhile ending to a videogame. Maybe there is and I haven't seen it. Please tell me if so...

The commenter's ruining the plot probably don't even own a 360 but have some complex where they feel better about being fat friendless slobs by spoiling games they have no intention playing, anonymously. Awesome! Now go eat one of your siblings.
