Halo 3 composer Marty O'Donnell interviewed photo

Halo 3 is out, and it seems like it's selling alright so far. While everyone is talking about how it looks and plays, we haven't heard much about how Halo 3 sounds. The Halo series of games have always been amazing-sounding titles, but the third version seems to be the most accomplished of the scores. Music4Games interviews composer Marty O'Donnell to get some insight into what it was like to create the score for what could be one of the biggest console games of all time.

O'Donnell talks about his scoring process, Bungie’s proprietary adaptive music system, and the pressures of writing music for one of the most popular game series. He also touches on the massive amount of work that went into Halo 3's score.

When asked about how much music he composed for the score, O'Donnell said, "That’s not easy to say. In terms of pure musical data in the engine, I’m around 7 hours. I’m not using everything, and that includes lots of different mixes and arrangements of some of the pieces. I can say this much, Mike Salvatori and I are now working on trying to make a Halo 3 Soundtrack and I’m certain we’ll need two CD’s."

When asked about his involvement with a Halo theatrical release, O'Donnell said, "Ask Peter Jackson, and let him know I’m available."

I almost find it depressing that this game is doing so well. Nothing against bungie or halo but it just seems like something better should be setting the records instead.

I agree completely with donkeykong. And the music is BORING. It sounds like Enya, is completely uncompelling, and makes an already floaty, low-impact game that much more sleepy.

does anyone else think this halo thing would be "just another game" if it were on ps2 originally? i mean, its good, but its only got the cult because for a long time it was the ONLY good xbox game.

Halo on PS2 would look like Halo on a low-end PC, buggy and unplayable.

The music is fitting, but sometimes the sound effects are not. Especially the weapon sounds are way to silent.

Halo has some of the worst game music

Spykron - I've been saying the same thing since Halo first came out. You're totally right. If another random, established FPS (think medal of honor, or something else that's a dime a dozen), came out around the same time, no one would have bought Halo, and it would have been over. The only reason why the first one sold so well is cause people were starving for something to play.

jamisu,

I don't really agree with you, simply because Halo was hyped before Bungie was even bought by Microsoft. PC and Mac gamers was touting it as the next big thing in FPS gaming, and then the hype machine got in full speed after Microsoft started advertising like hell. And Halo 1 was a pretty good game, both single and multiplayer (a lot of people really liked the co-op for example, which is something that is often missed in FPS games). I am not saying it is as good as all the hype etc, but another FPS at the same time as Halo wouldn't have changed much IMO.

Anyone who says Halo music is shit hasn't gotten to the final level in the original when the main theme starts kicking as your race out of the pillar of autumn. IT is intense and the music made it truly epic.

Nice, Marty.

i find it hard anyone can hate the music to halo. hate the game whatever..I don't care..but the music melds together so much and makes it work even the cheesy guitar rifts. i love me some orchestra style music with cheesy guitar rifts.

I like the main Halo theme, but the rest of the music is quite forgettable. I don't see why people brag about it so much.

Marty's a great guy, and he's rocked a mighty mullet. His score is truly one of gaming's best. It may not be especially unique or jaw-dropping, but it works exceptionally well and it never hinders or distracts. As I always say at the end of Halo posts, Fuck the haters.
