Halo 3 collector's discs coming to you pre-scratched photo

Excited for picking up your copy of Halo 3 at launch? Spent the extra money for the collector's tin, 'cause you wanted the hard copy of the artbook? Well, the folks at NeoGAF have some bad news for you: by the time you get it open, the discs look like they'll already be scratched. Perhaps you won't even need your 360 to put a giant dent in the disc for you.

A lot of people are experiencing problems with the way the Halo 3 discs are held in the case of the collector's edition. As you can see, the disc is held in by nothing more than a tiny piece of plastic and some foam pads. If you watch Gamevideo's unboxing video, they have similar problems.

If you check out the photos below, you can see the damage done. According to some of the GAF commenters, it looks even worse in person than what the photos show. Some of the people are saying that the discs have been rendered unplayable by the damage done.

This is clearly going to be a problem, and it'll be levied right at Microsoft, who's still under the spotlight from their billion dollar write-off. What are the boys in green to do? Give Microsoft a call if your disc is all scratched up and let us know of the results.

[Thanks to iRaf for the tip, and the GAF community for the pics]

As someone who is very particular about keeping everything they own in mint condition, I'm greatly troubled by this.

I will be pissed off to the extreme if my disk is scratched.

Lol, you paid over $500 for a preused game XD I bet that is what they did, they played the games then b-oxed them.

As someone who knows that his LE is now less than four hours away on a UPS truck, this makes Fuzzy sad.

If my disk be scratched, there be hell to pay. Or more aptly, I'll be one of the millions calling to bitch at MS. This is one of those PR gaffs that could have been avoided by letting a five year old look over the packaging for flaws. The five year old would have totally caught this one.

At times like this I`m glad that I don`t buy Special Editions. My copy will ship in an boring standard DVD case, but hey, I will have the joy and pleasure of destryoing it for myself.

Actually, the "rendered unplayable" stuff was on 4 and 5 of the forum. Good job not reading everything.

Times like these I'm glad I not only paid $40 for my copy, but it'll also arrive scratch free...

::warm feeling::

oops, just peed my pants. Thought it was smugness.

@catalyst:

The Legendary edition discs are housed in a metal tin also, it's just thicker than the Collector's Edition. Watch the GameVideos unboxing vid and you can see their disc is popped off the spindle when they open it.

There's an easy way to make sure this doesn't happen to you though: Just shake the case and if you hear a disc rattling around, ask for another one.

Will this finally get people to stop spending money just so they can get a GTAIV duffel bag or a Master Chief helmet for their cat?

Lets put all this mint-condition shit behind us. There's no point arguing about it, some people are clearly anal about it and some people dont care as long as it works.

Instead lets discuss this post on Bungie.net by a skilled Matlock who shows his evidence that THE DAMAGE is not legit:

He also suggests that it is the work of Sony Defense Force because the pictures in question were named Crap1, Crap2, Crap3.

To answer Suff0catingSight: I bought a used copy of Bangai-O for the Dreamcast a few years ago. It was lightly scratched, but seemed to play fine a first. Then I got to the second level, and the music in the game started cutting out badly. Returned it to the guy I bought it from and got my money back. Since then I've always been really paranoid about scratches on discs. That's the problem: even if the game plays fine at first, you never know if it's going to screw up on the last level or some other shit. So it's not just a cosmetic thing.

lol, the last thing you have to worry about is a small scratch.

I've been playing this game a few days now, and you're not missing much. The storyline is okay, and I guess it's finally going to have a ending (Haven't finished the fight yet) The gameplay feels last-gen to say the least. So they added a few new vehicles that play similar to any of the earlier vehicles, a few new guns (Most of which are completely useless) throw in some new nades, a few specialty items (Bubble shield, reginerate) and vwala(SP?) you have the BEST GAME IN HISTORY, based on the hype. But, There was a game.... Oh what was it, released atleast 6 months ago, a actual next-gen game.... Oh yeah! Gears of War! and wow does is SMOKE halo 3....

I'm not even going to mentioned Bioshock, or the greatest gaming month in history. November (Assassins Creed, Army of 2, Mass Effect, Crysis...more) Can we stop talking about halo yet???? Last thing, Let's try to start buying games based off it's true merit, and not just hype and reviews... Trust me the reviews are WAYYYYYY offfff. IGN gave it a 9.5, even though they only gave a 9.7 to bioshock... lol. A xbox180 game vs. a true 360 game; and the last-gen game is only .2 off.... LOL

I live in Australia. Same problem, maybe worse. The worst thing is that the music and electronics store I work at (may or may not have hi fi in the title) are knowingly selling it because word from above has told them to sell all of them, even the damaged discs. Considering the amount of X Boxes that have been bricked at my store, this is just spitting in the face of X Box fans just that little bit more.

I'm lucky enough that there are so few people around, I could exchange mine. My game disc seriously looked like someone had taken car keys to it. The only thing though, is that at least half of the Collectors Game discs were this way, and since they had bonus content (redeemable for Halo 3 gamer pics and Xbox Dashboard scheme), the discs can't be swapped with a regular copy. I managed to get a clean disc, but I'm still wondering about just getting my extra ten dollars back and sticking with the safe and sure regular copy

Mine was totaled, both discs were loose and all scratched, pretty deep too so I returned it. No sense in keeping a game that won't play. Oh well, I got the Legendary one too so I can still play that one.

My HALO 3 case was dented, both discs were loose and the game disc was all scratched, I returned it, got a new copy and only the game disc was loose in this one with a little bit of the same scratching, but it plays fine so far. I got the Legendary Edition being shipped from Sam's Club because it was a lower price than anywhere, so once I get that, I'll send the Limited disc(disc only) in for replacement. From the pics of the Legendary Edition, it sure looks like 1 of those plastic cases to me, so it should be fine.
