Halo 3 collector's discs coming to you pre-scratched photo

Excited for picking up your copy of Halo 3 at launch? Spent the extra money for the collector's tin, 'cause you wanted the hard copy of the artbook? Well, the folks at NeoGAF have some bad news for you: by the time you get it open, the discs look like they'll already be scratched. Perhaps you won't even need your 360 to put a giant dent in the disc for you.

A lot of people are experiencing problems with the way the Halo 3 discs are held in the case of the collector's edition. As you can see, the disc is held in by nothing more than a tiny piece of plastic and some foam pads. If you watch Gamevideo's unboxing video, they have similar problems.

If you check out the photos below, you can see the damage done. According to some of the GAF commenters, it looks even worse in person than what the photos show. Some of the people are saying that the discs have been rendered unplayable by the damage done.

This is clearly going to be a problem, and it'll be levied right at Microsoft, who's still under the spotlight from their billion dollar write-off. What are the boys in green to do? Give Microsoft a call if your disc is all scratched up and let us know of the results.

[Thanks to iRaf for the tip, and the GAF community for the pics]

Just FYI, the discs in the Legendary edition are in regular cases, just like the standard edition, so this only applies to the collectors.

Still sucks, but lets not blow shit out of proportion just for flames sake. Wait until Monday night to see how widespread this really is.

I'm sure Microsoft will initiate a speedy replacement program. It'd be cool if they did it through the retailers even.

If it's still playable why give a shit about some superficial scratches? I've had disks way more scratched that played just fine.

I don't know about you, but I like my new games to look... er... new.

Suff1catingSight:

If you read the post, there are reports of some games being scratched to neigh unplayable. You have to understand that not all scratches are created equal. A disc can have billions of shallow marks that'll look crappy, but play just fine. But just one deep scratch will ruin the whole thing.

I read 3 pages of the discussion and not once did anyone say the discs were unplayable.

It's just a bunch of matlocks saying "OMFG A SCRATCH! THE WORLD IS ENDING ZOMG!"

Suff0cating, I read a report on... either Kotaku or Wired that said that some discs were rendered unplayable. And besides, when I pay for a disc, it's not acceptable for it to be scratched and not mint. I pay for mint, I should get mint. Everyone else should expect the same from MS.

*rolls eyes*

mint condition discs. We are talking about five-cent platic discs, you sound foolish.

And what's with all these Matlocks claiming to work at stores saying xx% of their Collectors editions are "scratched to hell/death"? Are they superman? Can they magically see through tin cases.

I've had regular DVD's rattling around in their case with a broken and pointy center-piece and they were fine. If jagged plastic can't render a disc unplayable I highly doubt a flat piece of plastic and a couple of foam pieces will do that kind of damage.

Scratched or not, that is damn stupid packaging. The more elaborate the DVD case, the worse the spindle design is! Of *course* it's going to fall apart during transport, to say nothing of getting the disc back into the case.

I'm not a huge Sony fan, but PS2 cases are probably the best in the world. Why can't companies leave good enough alone?

You're still ignoring the huge steaming pile of bullshit that this whole situation is dumping in copious amounts.

You're paying for a new product, you should get a product that looks new. Untouched. Perfect condition.

I really can't believe how you can just regard this as bitching and moaning by a bunch of Matlocks.

Terrible use of the meme, by the way.

Suff0cating, 'tis you who sound foolish, my friend. You're missing the point entirely. I most certainly do not NEED mint-condition discs. Few consoles will refuse a lightly scratched disc, for example. However, at $70 a pop, these people are paying for discs that have not been used and show no signs of wear, i.e. new or "mint" discs. If they were paying $50 at GameStop for a used game, I would expect such damage to the disk surface. But this? This is bad - nay, horrendous - business practice. Totally unacceptable.

This is actually pretty common. When I worked at gamestop, people came in all the time complaining about this. Some special edition tins don't have anything to mount the disk on. I've seen some SEs that actually just had the disk taped to one side of the tin. It is total BS, but not uncommon. Of course, since this is Halo, people are going to go batshit.
