I know why Im not; I played Halo 1 and most of 2,
Meh.
Why so popular? well....
1. movie of '06; Pirates of the Caribbean
1. TV show; American idol
1. album; red Hot chili Peppers
1. game; Madden 07
People Are Stupid. period.
I haven't got a 360at the moment, but when I will buy one someday I'll pick Halo 3 up mainly for its 4-player co-op than its multiplayer.
I was going to say something like that, but the Destructoid fanboys can be rabid at times.
This website DOES breed fanboys afterall.
*this rant made possible by god*
And this is coming from a Halo fan.
It is my day off.
I am saddened that I lost the time. It evoked the same feeling of fleeting, wasted hours as when I was forced to watch 'Glitter' (same friend, Dan, who purchased H3). I want the time back.
The dialog is particularly hokey. The story is third-rate sci-fi. And Master Chief? Is he a "master" or a "chief". Is he Native-American? Is he somehow involved with Mountain Dew? I'm confused.
Cheers,
-C
Halo brought a lot more people into the "Halo" industry then the game industry.
At least you know your weakness and you work on getting around it. Just remind yourself this simple little fact: While it's not always the case, sometimes a piece of media is so widely read or viewed for a reason other than hype. 90% of the people I know read Fahrenheit 451 but that doesn't make it any less of a good book. Same goes for Dante's Inferno. My single favorite piece of literature ever.
you make a good point there.
It sorts of reminds me of the people that plays CS in the pc gaming... they only play that f***** game. I mean, i also played it a lot (back in the year 2000).
i understand the cultural phenomenom and im ok with it. Really, Iam. But im not ok with reviews throwing pure tens "like candy", a review should be fair. And i dont think most review have been so far. And im going to be really pissed when they announce Halo 3 to be "game of the year" at gamespot.
@Leigh: i still want to marry you, even if you are like a black widow. You can have my Virtual Boy.
Oh yeah, and here's a pic of me about to lay the smackdown on some dude.

First off, didn't read every comment (sorry!)
The one thing I have to say though, is that it isn't just about the size of the playerbase. You look at the single player campaign and rate that, you may not get a 10/10 game. But as a complete package, it's score will go up for sure. All the stuff Optimus Prime mentioned above me, and huge production value, as well as a ton of polish add so much more to the game as a whole.
But anyway, having just finished the game on legendary, its pretty damn sweet. As has been said though, it meets, not exceeds expectations. However, do not lose sight of the fact that everyone expected a lot. It really is a fantastically fun game, perhaps not revolutionary in the 'original' department, but it sets a new standard for me for entertaining single player/co-op gameplay (on both xbox and pc).
You have got to be under the age of 19, because that was one of the stupidest things you could have said and only mildly excusable if you are too young to know that there is a thing called PC gaming.
There were jocks, fratboys, rappers, older people (50's and whatnot with no kids in tow), etc. Like it or not, this game really unites many different kinds of people under one banner. While I think that the scoring system is kinda silly, I do believe there are some well-written, sensible reviews of the game no matter what score they gave. From what I read, not a single reviewer had a single thing to complain about the multiplayer portion aside from chocolate milk chugging Timmys. Yet the single-player is getting lambasted for every single flaw imaginable. Not that reviewers are wrong, that's their job. But I think Bungie has created something really special in multiplayer, and I think it will live up to the hype for many years to come.
In short: good for you. This doesn't belong on the front page, though.
Actually, you do care.
As for the hype about the game being a good thing, no it isn't. Why? The entire series blows. Hence, why the mood could use some rightous "dampening".
It would also get rid of the "OMG X GOT A HIGH SCORE THAN Y" flamefests that appear every Tuesday on various message boards and conversations.
When Destructoid first announced it's new review system and how flawed the current system in practice by most magazines and websites was, I really thought they were going to switch to a numberless system. While Destructoid remains the only ones actually using the numbers correctly I'm still lying in wait for a numberless system.
Or would it just start arguments between people thinking that it was a positive review or a negative review....
Forget Halo 3, I'll be playing Team Fortress 2 instead :).
But uh yeah Halo 3 is alright. Its kinda like the Mcdonalds of video gaming, alot of people love it, Im impartial to it, the "fine connoisseurs" of gaming hate it, some people will eat it just cause its there.
But its there, its making incomprehensible amounts of money, and no amtter where you stand, its not gonna be going anywhere anytime soon.
As for Halo, I'll always remember the 3 days where I really enjoyed pwning 13 year olds n00bZ, much to their chagrin.
But, in addition to being utterly devoted and addicted to Team Fortress 2 now, after a 4 year hiatus, I've picked up Starcraft again. I'm not sure if I'll ever put it down again... until Starcraft 2 of course. I had forgotten what multiplayer gaming was all about. I feel like a kid again. Sorry Halo 3, no love from me.
Halo has always been about the multiplayer. you won't find a better FPS multiplayer out there for my money on a console. THAT'S why i'm fine with the hype... not this "BELIEVE" and "FINISH THE FIGHT" shit.
Then who the fuck cares what you think on the subject? If you havent even played 1/10th of the game and you judge it, you are jumping on the oh so cool "Im better than Halo bandwagon". Saying Halo 3 is anything but an extremely solid game is a joke, your bag of tea or not.
First off, you don't know my age (I am in my 20's). Second off, you have not provided one shred of evidence that another game offers all those features (or even close). I have played many PC games throughout my lifetime (probably more than you even) and none of them offer what Halo 3 does. Please, enlighten me and provide me one example of a PC game that offers all those features instead of saying something ignorant like "that was one of the stupidest things you could have said".
But when someone says "Halo fucking blows", my take is that they either 1) suck at first person shooters, 2) hate playing in a large community of fuckwads, 3) just genuinely don't like the game, or 4) enjoy PC first person shooters.
I usually like to try to take a more diplomatic stance by saying "I like Half-Life 2 and Unreal Tournament better" instead of saying "OMG u like Haloz, ur teh gay!!".
Whatever, to each his own I say. I'd play Okami or Killer7 any day over Halo. That doesn't make my opinion any more or less valid, I'm just a fucking weirdo.
Seems to me that Team Fortress 2 will have all that shit...
Screenshot system, map building, co-op, maybe not a co-op campaign, but the gameplay is inherently team-based, integrated community (Steam), robust doesn't even begin to describe the multiplayer and it's only been in open Beta for about a week.
Quake 3 had everything aside from the co-op as it had no campaign.
Map building really isn't anything new, I think it's just something that's been brought down to the level of your everyday player with the Forge system, so you don't have to be a master of 3D modeling and architecture in order to take advantage of it.
I don't mean to be rude, but I'm not sure where you were in the late 90s early 00s PC scene...
hey buddy I happen to be the neighborhood CHAMP of shaq fu, so FAQ U. Were bashing HALO here not a classic like Shaq Fu. geez.
*orgasm
So, a 10 is not "perfect," it simply means that a game with that score is as good as the scale permits. The mythical perfect game would have to be an 11, which is off the scale, as it should be.
10/10 scores, therefore, are justified.
I'm pretty sure none of the features you mentioned are going to be coming to the console version of the TF2 and if you are going to compare apples to apples you need to talk about the console version of it. And I think there is a big difference between even the pc version of TF2's screen capture abilities where you play the game and hit print screen or own a video capture card. Then Halo you play the game, watch the film, and can fly the camera anywhere within the environment to take a screenshot from any angle, which is then uploaded to bungie net for your friends to see. Don't get me wrong I'm looking forward to everything in the orange box but give credit where credit is due.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Except, I don't care if you compare it to PC games, because no PC game has compared.
@SlayerVin
Once again, you cannot show me a PC game that compares to the offerings of Halo 3. Good try though. Bye bye now. :)
But for my money, Warhawk is almost as good as Halo. [[b]ASIDE (for fanboys): I didn’t say that Warhawk was as good as Halo. Of course, I’m just referring to the multiplayer, because Warhawk doesn’t have a campaign mode. Granted, there aren’t nearly as many users out there on the PSN as there are on Xbox Live, and there are only five maps and four modes in Warhawk, but it’s just as fast-paced, fun, and competitive — and when you get a bunch of players with Bluetooth headsets talking trash, you could fool yourself into thinking that you’re fragging some 13-year-old punk on Xbox Live who keeps calling you a “fag”. God, those fucking kids don’t shut up...
Anyway, what many other people have been saying is true: the incredible success of Halo is due in large part to the massive hype machine that Microsoft has put behind the game. Obviously, it is a very, very good game — otherwise, it wouldn’t have received the critical acclaim that it has — but advertising is everything in today’s world. Overall, it was a great read, Leigh, and remember: you’re not alone.
