Halo 3 cannot finish the fight against shoddy production photo

I sigh, truly I do, when I think about Microsoft and its awful, awful production values this generation. It seems that doing things on the cheap and as rushed as possible is the order of the day, which might work in the short term, but is infuriating gamers. With the release of Halo 3, more people than ever are surely being introduced to the world of the Xbox 360 -- and with it, are beginning to suffer the consequences of shoddy production. Not only do Halo 3 players have to fear their console red ringing on them, they now have the threat of unreadable discs looming over their heads.

Both Bungie's forums and the Xbox.com forums are saturated with posts complaining about disc read errors and freezing glitches with their copies of Halo 3. There are complaints about both the Legendary and standard editions and these are brand new, good condition copies by all accounts. Either the game is truly defective, or people's Xbox 360s are just having one mass suicide, though many of the affected claim other games are working fine. Either way, this is not what the biggest launch of the year needs. Not at all.

It's quite pathetic, in fact, that with so much attention on the 360 thanks to Halo, something like this should happen. I wonder what all those new customers will think when their consoles keep crashing out on them. After the anger over the badly designed packaging for the Collector's Edition, these stupid, easily avoidable problems are becoming a farce.

[Tip from the Donutty one]

If there is one thing Microsoft wants gamers to understand, it would be that Microsoft does not care about the quality of their products.

Oh, no RROD!

I'm a co-op whore so I've been playing through the campaign with 3 other friends over system link and been enjoying it thoroughly. Of course coop makes any game go up by a few points in my book. Hell, I played Earth Defense Force 2017 for the better part of 2 months just because it was fun to blow up bugs when friends came by.

Halo 3 has been pretty fun so far, the Red Ring of Death does make me a little nervous. I'm on my second 360 and this one makes a really high pitched whining noise when playing games. I thought it was just the disc spinning up, but it makes the screeching noise while playing XBLA games with no disc in the tray. It's like it has a wood chipper in it and is dropping hamsters into it one after another

Oh god... my 360 runs off of the blood of hamsters... That must be why MS puts those anti-tamper stickers on the back of the 360. If anyone knew the truth...

Its the XBOXes finally over heating to the point of meltdown.

My Xbox fried last night. it was just freezing after a few minutes of play. I went out and bought another while this one is being replaced.

Goddamn it, Microsoft. How the fuck do you screw up the biggest fucking game on your console? This is absolutely pathetic. Man, if Peter Moore were still here, he'd...

I've got nothing.

Have you actually been reading the site? there are plenty of good stories about Halo 3... hell, the most negative stories about halo 3 were someone ELSES words that Halo would not sell at all in japan(which is not to hard to believe considering the 360's run in japan), and a stories that said Halo was great, but certainly not the best thing since slice bread. If saying a game is rated 8.5/10 and still called a game you should BUY is considered "bashing", then well damn a whole shit load of games get bashed on sites... i never new that saying something was great but not ungodly perfect was considered "bashing"... Bineg unbiased means calling ti like it is, the good and the bad, it is NOT blindly believe something is utterly perfect in everyway... sigh, fanboys...

@Ralph
Being new to the console game is no excuse for shotty consoles. If you are going to market something to consumers then you are supposed to make sure you test the product before hand and make sure you fix all the bugs before you start selling it. Being "new" is no excuse for skipping such a crucial step. When you sell a product you should make damn sure it works! Sony recieved heat for it's early failings on the PS2 and so does MS with the 360... Hell, maybe if MS wasn't so eager to get a year head start on Sony and Nintendo, they chould have used the time to test the console found the problems and fixed it before launch so they could release a solid product.

Sterling. No offense taken...developed a thick skin with all the Halo Hate out there. I am a big fan of the game and also am fine with you letting people know that a MINORITY of the people who have the game have had problems. Like one poster said the more people who buy the game(1.5million +) the more problems can occur. It's the law of averages. I just felt your article was riddled with words like "awful" "cheap" "pathetic"...but now that i realize this is a blog as opposed to a news site, so it is your opinion, and I have no say about it except that i think the piece you put together is a bit misleading.

@chillyBilly...obviously your ignorant statement is meant to ruffle feathers. Just to let you know the cheap and easy way out is the Wii. Unless you have kids you only buy a game for it every few months at most. The Halo3 launch was essentially perfect, minus a few scratched disks. The events went off without a hitch for the most part. No stampeding people, no deaths, no crazy ebay markups...wait until you see the NPD numbers dummy...if you even know what that means.

@chillybilly...ok so 2 out of a million is acceptable. Retarded statement but...sure. Oh hey, how many problems were there in reality? Do you know? You probably don't want to start flinging numbers around if you don't have the facts.

That's exactly how I feel about it. I'm a huge Dtoid fan, don't get me wrong. I heart yoos guys. It is a blog though, so it's not meant to be an unbiased factual representation of the facts. It wasn't so much Sterling's post as much as his choice of adjectives that put a spin on it. I've got the Legendary edition and haven't had any problems at all. I got a 360 on launch day and I'm currently on my third one, so I'm no stranger to shit being fucked up.

It comes down to the fact that it's a blog, and you can't get your panties in a twist about how you feel someone paints their picture. If this site were free of editorializing, then it wouldn't be nearly as badass. ;)

It's too bad they're making enough money and have enough good games that they don't really have to care. The customers get shafted, and if we want our games, there's not a damn thing that can be done about it.

I'll just say that something like this better not fucking happen when I get a 360 for Mass Effect in November (when, hopefully, most of more the RROD-prone consoles will have been weeded out of the market).

I've had this disc problem on 4 different 360s from a ton of perfectly clean discs: Vegas (mp and sp), Chromehounds(sp), Samurai Warriors 2, the Darkness, and finally Dead Rising. Dead Rising was the only one to have a red ring, while the others were just simple [mindnumbingly frustrating] annoyances. In all situations, we deleted all saved data for the game and everything worked fine again (except for Vegas, which was a touchy prick forever).

For the record Halo 3 is working fine on my 1 year old 360.

Zero freezes, zero glitches, zero scratches. I have played the campaign in coop in one sitting (6hours) with no issues whatsoever.
I have played online for multiple matches with no issues whatsoever.

My question to you all is....

What the freak to you guys do to your consoles/discs?

There's really no excuse for this launch. Microsoft has tons of resources to make sure that this launch goes off perfectly, and they still screw it up. Amazing.

I don't think this is limited to just Halo 3, but many of the mass produced big-name games. I remember a lot of people had problems with Gears of War discs having the same problem, and I had horrible read errors on my first copy of Bioshock.
MS is lucky the PS3 doesn't have a lot of games worth owning, else they would be hemmorraging from all this poorly made stuff they're cranking out.

@Gottleib: Obviously you are not reading what the majority of the posters are typing in. This launch was not all flowers and rainbows like MSoft would like us all to believe. As far as stating anything that would try to ruffle feathers; I think MSoft and Bungie have done that just fine by themselves, my comments were simply opinion of my own which is what yours were to you.

i've read posts on the Gamestop forums about a few people having the freezing problem, the game freezes at the exact same spot, same level. but from what i've read some have taken the disc back and got a new copy and the new disc still freezes at the same spot,so it must be a combination of a bad disc & 360.
i myself haven't had an major problems, i do get slight freezes sometimes for about a second at checkpoints or when it says "loading done"

I breathed a quick sigh of relief when only the "extra" disc was slightly scratched in my special edition.

But honestly I know they want to rush things out before the Christmas holiday, but would it have really cost ANY sales whatsoever if they released the game in October and allowed for the same amount of discs to be produced but all at a slower-burn speed to ensure no disc-read errors? 360 doesn't need to worry about "saturating" the market. There's plenty of 360s everywhere, only the Wii is in short supply.

They really need to slow down and make the price we pay for next-gen worth it.

Well it just happened to me. I've had my console since launch without any problems, and within 3 days of getting halo it breaks. First it started with what looked like snow on the screen whenever the game seemed to be rendering anything 3d, then when I called Microsoft to solve it, everything went to shit.
The lady had me try something to check it out, and immediately got a red ring that won't even go away now. Shows a system error that is apparently with the a/v output, and I've tried different cables to fix the problem.

Alas, it didn't work. So after buying a new Live subscription and a $75 game, I have to pay another $100 to get my console fixed.

Is it just me or does a game breaking my console mean I shouldn't have to pay to fix it?

this article is about halo 3 and ms defects, I don't even know why fanboys find it worthwhile to bash the ps3. another consoles "faults" doesn't make the xbox 360's faults anymore acceptable. it might be lacking games, but the ps3 is a fucking tank.

that being said, halo 3 has been pretty fun to play at work on our breaks.
