Halo 3 beta gets a release date; admit it, you wet yourself a little, huh? photo

Bungie just dropped their big bombshell, and it turns out that it's the start date for the Halo 3 multiplayer beta; May 16th. According to their site, at 12AM on the 16th the download option in Crackdown will become active, and people around the world will simoultaneously cry as they realize the pinnacle of their existence is a chance to play a video game before it has been released.

The beta will last until midnight on June 6th and will include three of the planned maps; Valhalla, High Ground and Snowbound. It will also, undoubtedly, include racism, thirteen year olds who just learned the term "Thunderc*nt", and the hopes and dreams of an entire generation. Face it, the only way this beta could meet the expectations it has already created would be if it spontaneously generates sexy, large-breasted, subservient unicorns, and hands you wads of hundred dollar bills every time you enter a server.

[Thanks Zach, for the tip, and for always being there when we've had a rough day.]

Thundercunt... priceless...

So I've been holding on to my Crackdown to play a Beta for 1 month? Nuts to that.

The video looks awesome. Trip mines? Bubble shields? Replay of kills? This is going to be awesome. Not only can I brag about a no scope, I'll be able to watch it in slow motion.

and NBS alex... crackdown is a good enough game to warrant purchase even without the HALO 3 beta :(

You should have made the topic said: At the 6th of June you can finally sell your Crackdown copy.

As soon as I saw the image, I was actually disappointed that you didn't use the other churchill pic.

Also, I want a piece of that unicorn action.

That video wasn't too bad...Halo 2 multiplayer sucked. Bringing back the assault rifle from Halo 1 brings hope to the game.

Yeah but can you walk thru the shield grenade?

Walk in, drop a grenade, run out and wait and attack.
Hipple's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/10/2007 08:48

Blindside, you could do that, but the guy who dropped the shield grenade is going to be able to walk out too, so it's probably not going to be very effective.

I'm thinking the shield just stops bullets from hitting you but grenades and yourself are still able to pass through it. It probably last just long enough for you to get your shield back.

I'm not sure if I like this idea but I guess I'll find out come May 16th.

Yeah but what if he dropped it and surrounded by enemies, he steps out and pop, he get popped!

and to Kryptinite doesn't the video show that it STOPS grenades? I thought he threw it down just as someone thru a grenade. Also why have a teaser trailer showing him blocking an explosion if you can't do it in the game?
BlindsideDork's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/10/2007 09:01

My bad Kryptinite, it doesn't show the grenade bouncing off it but it does show an explosion..

Oh yeah, I forgot about that initial video when he threw one down to shield himself from the explosion.

I guess it all matters in how this will be implemented in game. I guess it wouldn't make sense for the thing to stop bullets and not grenades.
Hipple's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/10/2007 09:15

The video pretty clearly shows a grenade bouncing off the bubble shield. I figure they'll be like the shield doors, where you can run through them, but no gunfire or grenades can pass through.

I just really hope they end up making a decent animation for those X button actions. I don't want it to look like I'm pooping a bubble shield grenade thing.

I'm wondering when the other bonus crackdown content is coming that'll finish out the gamerscore requirements. Thinking back on this from February till now, I officially do not like them breaking 100 points off the retail disc and making me wait till god knows when to finish out this bonus content.

I'm gonna be pissed if I have to wait till after the Halo 3 beta for it. I'm pissed I've had to wait this long.

As far as the H3 beta is concerned, I am neither gay nor a black man, so I have obviously never played Halo online. I hear things about how those are the only people brave enough to play against the 10-15 year olds on XBL. So far as I'm concerned, the single player is where it's at. In the original Halo, when the Flood first appeared, I wet my pants a little. About a quart or so (I was playing on the difficulty right below Legendary, mind you). The game took a total left turn on me compared to what I'd played up to that point. I realize multiplayer isn't going to offer that same experience...

How would a game like H2 or H3 differ in regards to some of the more popular FPS out there currently? I've played UT, GoW, Quake 3, Doom, CS, etc... What am I getting here that I haven't gotten elsewhere? Not saying I won't play the Beta, as I will, but I'm just wondering what the hook of Halo online is compared to the rest...
Hipple's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/10/2007 09:50

I can say that playing Halo 2 online is one of the smoothest experiences that you can get with any online multiplayer FPS. As far as gameplay, you're not going to get much that you haven't seen before, but it's still fun. At least I still have fun playing it, but that's probably because I'm not "hardcore" or "sweet" or "something".

Well I am a black man, not gay, and I enjoy Halo online. I mean it's been awhile but you just have to weed through all the ignorant people that play. Mainly the young kids who have the freedom to say whatever they want online and not get their ass whooped.

I'm not a huge Halo fan, multiplayer nor campaign, but that youtube video got me pretty pumped to play the Beta. If the online is as good as it looks, I will be buying Halo 3 on launch date. If not, I'll wait a few months for a used copy.

3 weeks is bullshit, it took me 2 years to get sick of Halo 2, a few months of H3 multi won't spoil me.
What they should have done is beta test the co-op, but then they wouldn't have much to say at e3 I guess... "Hey look!, it's some more fluff footage and guess what the blue X button does now?"

Seriously Azrael, do you think the final game will look like that?

On Bungie's website they said that those shots are taking from an Alpha build. What we see come May 16th will look better than that. On top of that, whenever they release the final product, the game will go through it's final polish process. So we won't see the best it can be until the game is on retail shelves.

Good to see that no one is complaining about having a month to play the beta. That's plenty for me in order to see if getting hyped will be worth it. I'm actually more anxious now for Crackdown DLC than the beta. This time around I'm just looking for a more solid gameplay experience out of the franchise. The graphics in Halo 2 still satisfy me, so more features is what I'm hoping for.

@ Azrael:

I agree...makes me think of all those posts about ports looking "last-gen" HAHA! But I don't seem it being bumped up terribly high. they are worrying about the game play instead of all focus on visuals. TRYING to make it fun. And Bungie used that "Alpha build" line in screenshots months ago, are they still in alpha mode? psssh.
