Hallmark presents Galaga arcade ornament photo

While Hallmark is a giant, soulless, holiday creating corporation there are sometimes benefits to their existence. For instance their ornament selection is vast. If you're interested in it you can pretty much get it in ornament form from Hallmark; that includes retro gaming. This year Hallmark has introduced a Galaga arcade cabinet ornament for your Christmas tree decorating enjoyment.

It doesn't just hang, though. This thing is a fully interactive ornament that plays the new game theme from Galaga and makes the bleeps and bloops -- as tipster Michael B. described them -- from the exploding of alien ships. Plus, there are lights! You can actually check out video and sound of it over at the Hallmark site. It's a little pricey at $18.50 (I think, I don't actually know the going price for ornaments), but if your tree needs more gaming love then this is a good way to go, unless you've already bought the Blue Shell ornament or something from our Christmas Gift Guide.

See, there's an upside to the millions of dollars companies like Hallmark have.

How come we can have functioning mame on toasters, but we can't get it on our christmas ornaments?

Ooo...but it does have light and sound. I'm a sucker for game sounds...one year for my birthday I went crazy and bought a ton of Nintendo audible dioramas from the 8-bit era...this might have to go on my list.

If you can actually play a game of Galaga on it, then it's worth it.

Hallmark's site is down. It's their loss, because I am just drunk enough to have wanted to order this. :(

i saw this in the store.. pretty rad.. and yeah the price is about right sadly.. hallmark loves gouging those cheap pieces of christmas joy.. kind of let down by the sounds but just having an arcade cabinet in your tree is well worth it i think..

Wouldn't have mattered anyway, Mackie, it's in store only...although it can be found around the net elsewhere.

Fuck MC Hammer. I hate big butts. I think they're gross. They should be small and manageable. Big butts are messy and generally unsanitary. What was the article about again?

This just reminds me how cool the giant poster size decals were on the old machines.

Wish there was 1 central web site documenting the art that was on the sides and front of the old arcade boxes. The pinball machines as well for that matter.

Some was great.

Galaga looks like it would be a good candidate for a (deviant art) 3d hard candy CGI treatment.

I've got this on my tree already, along with the Pac Man cabinet they were selling last year. You could probably still find them both on E-Bay.

I got one of these today, and yes, Hallmark ornaments are expensive, however they are highly collectible and tend to go up in value (they only make them for one year, and in limited quantities), provided you hang onto all the original packaging. My parents have been collecting them since before I was born (in 1982) and have almost 200 of them, and according to the most recent price guide, the collection is worth something like 22 grand. One of the ornaments alone is worth around $1200. The Galaga machine is the start of my own personal collection.

Just curious, why is Hallmark "a giant, soulless, corporation"?
