Half-Life 2 sucks on the PS3, according to 1Up photo

It's bad enough that Valve's The Orange Box is suffering from a joke of a delay on the PlayStation 3, but if 1Up is to be believed, the wait isn't even going to be worth it. Once again, the prospect of severe framerate issues rears its ugly head, which is said render the game "unplayable" at times. Just what is the EA port team playing at?

After spending a significant amount of time with a near final version of the PS3 game, it's apparent that this version suffers from a number of technical flaws, which at best merely hinder game play and at worst make the experience downright unplayable. Framerate is a consistent issue throughout the Half-Life series of games included in The Orange Box. One moment you'll be cruising through the game at 30 frames per second and the next you'll be enjoying a slideshow of series protagonist Gordon Freeman cruising down the river. However, Portal suffers from no such technical hiccups and is on its way to being a pitch-perfect port of the spatial reasoning exercise. Due to a server connection issue, we were unable to get any time with Team Fortress 2.

At least Portal's okay, that's the main thing. One can only hope that "near final" isn't completely "final," but I don't know how much more work they're hoping to do with it to fix such glaring issues. Between the ridiculous delay and the shoddy porting effort, by all accounts it seems that Valve's offer of the year has totally shafted the PS3. No surprise, since Valve head Gabe Newell thinks Sony's console is a complete waste of time.

If there were any PlayStation 3 owners waiting for this one, I hope they have a good PC, just in case.

No way, i think drake's uncharted is the best game i have ever played. and i am not saying that lightly. I really love this game.

Half life 2 was a huge let down for me 2 years ago. i mean it really tanked on me. i loved the first one so much, thought the second one would take yah back into that sci fi place it had at the end of it. instead, it was more like a halloween game, i thought parts of it were ok, but way over hyped, and i played it again recently and still, it wasnt that good.

TO ME any way. I'm not a fan boy. How many times do i have to give props to the wii and the 360 before you guys stop labeling me as a fan boy. the truth is, the people who throw that shit at me are sony bashers.

"Valve head Gabe Newell thinks Sony's console is a complete waste of time" HAHAHA!! Wait... didn't he have to make a public apology over that quote?

Half Life 2 really doesn't have much against some of the stuff that's been released this year, and even on the PS3. Skate, Warhawk, and TF2 are all easily better than HL2. Not to say that HL2 is bad, but it certainly ain't the greatest.

LOL. Blu-Ray 3 can't play a game released in 2004. LOL. This is just sad.

Incidentally, I've decided to no longer address hexfix. He has shown himself to be a fucking idiot once again, and I have decided he's beyond reason and beyond help. May God have mercy on his Cell processor.

I think Gabe has called the PS3 a waste of time on more than one occasion. It's no surprise he farmed it out to EA; probably because he didn't want to waste time on the PS3, in his own words. So hell yeah it's Gabe's fault. I have to commend him for sticking to his guns, though, he'd have been a total hypocrite to have Valve do the PS3 version in-house. IT seems to me that he would rather send the PS3 version to supercorporation EA who has already dumped literally millions into devkits for the PS3 as opposed to dumping Valve's budget on dev platforms and sdk's for a system that he despises.

*snicker* Sony just can't get a break these days.

If I want a Valve game I'll buy it for the PC. They know what they're doing in there. I've never been a fan of games ported from one platform to another, it just doesn't seem the same to me, joystick keyboard or what have you. While I think its a great idea to bring some of Valve's best selling softwares to more consumers, I just prefer to play a game written for the PC on the PC.

Blu-ray has nothing to do with the frame rates of Half-Life 2 and the main problem with the Source engines seems to be it's lack of multithreading (it only uses 40% of my core 2 quad) and the fact that Valve who knows the Source inside out, giving EA the heavy task of porting the engine to opengl was really stupid. Moving an engine from directx to opengl is a lot harder than it may sometimes seem and if Valve actually cared, the Ps3 version would have the potential to be better than the 360 version in every way.

On a side note why didn't Valve allow mods for their console versions, pretty big let down since the only games I regularly play now a days are mods.

Dear God, you'd think Destructoid readers would be smarter and more experienced in interpreting sarcasm, by now...

@brainderailment
No, sir, I am not retarded, but thank you for your interest. Half-Life 2 was originally released for personal computers on November 16th, 2004. Since then, it was been adapted successfully for both the Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles. Thank you, goodnight.

@hicks
It's called humor. I know Blu-Ray has nothing to do with it, but if Sony didn't want people cracking Blu-Ray jokes and shouting "TALLADEGA NIGHTS!", they shouldn't have shoved the format down our throats so soon. My comment was largely made in jest, with heaping helpings of slight over-exaggeration, as is common on the Destructoid blog site. We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I.

Read the third sentence in my response to you. And I quote: "Since then, it was been adapted successfully for both the Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles." I realize that the PS3 is slightly more difficult to develop for, but come on. The fucking original Xbox ran the damn thing beautifully. It should not be that hard. Think about it.

Also, guys, is hexfix saying that, so long as Killzone 2 is a revolutionary game when it finally comes out next year, then the failures and shortcomings of prior PS3 games will not matter and, thus, we should just casually brush these failings aside like they don't matter? I'm just curious.

Jim, may I join you in laughing?

*Sigh* I saw this coming after Gabe Newell said Sony should do a “do-over” with the PS3. I wasn’t expecting much after the development for the PS3 version was outsourced. It’s a damn shame...The Orange Box could’ve been awesome on PS3.

Action: Yeah, but it's still not a plus point for the PS3. Look, I really have no problem with the PS3 as a piece of kit, outside of Sony's fuckwittery, but people like Hexfix trying to promote its inability to run a near four-year-old game like it's a GOOD thing is laughable.

The PS3 is supposed to be the leading platform for graphics, and framerate issues during Half-Life fucking 2 is a terrible, terrible statement for the console's power.

@Action Bastard, re: PS3 coding
Okay, fair enough. But if it's that much more difficult to adapt, then they should've devoted more time and effort to it. And I still don't understand why the PS3 is that significantly harder to code for. It seems to me like either the industry is way behind and should've caught up with Sony (less likely, IMO), or that Sony fucked up somewhere along the line and they made their system way more complex that it ever needed to be. If it's the latter, then I don't blame Valve nearly as much for slacking, if they did.

damn it man, this is fucking irritating. I picked up a PS3 based off the fact I wanted a next gen system that would be able to play my back log of games on my fancy-shmancy TV and be able to enjoy decent fucking games. This is the game I was waiting to get after playing it on my friends 360 and hearing that EA fucked up the port. Oblivion is proof that it's possible to port 360 games and get it right. Granted, they did have an entire year to make it run right, but if you have an entire team dedicated to getting it running on another system, I as a consumer expect results. Oh well, at least Portal is alright. If TF2 is alright, I'll pick it up regardless and just swallow nasty frame rates ><

Amazing coincidence in how hexfix posting to a thread corresponds to the exact moment when that thread starts to go down the shitter. I'm going to follow Sharpless's lead and no longer address him directly, and preferably not at all.

Anyway, what kind of crazy isolinear and bio-neural gel pack technology is Sony using in the PS3 such that these developers can't make their games run correctly on it? And are the developers who do manage to get their games to work on it really just evil subversives from the future hoping to destabilize the time-line or something? Or maybe we have a situation like this one on our hands here.

It's harder than I thought. He's too stupifying not to talk about. Good Star Trek reference, by the way.

@Action Bastard
The deeper we get into the current console generation, the less I understand just what the fuck is up with the industry. Sigh. Whatever happened to the days of going to the store, buying Super Mario Brothers 3, putting it in your NES, and playing it. I miss patching up game issues by blowing into their slots.

Orange Box is in the top 10 list of best games ever... twice (360 and PC). It's obviously a good game. Just because a few of you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks. It just means you don't like it.

Agreed with Action Bastard that this is a problem with the developers (not Valve, but EA -- period). Also, it's obvious that developers can make good games on the PS3 (Infinity Ward is the best example). However, there is still a major issue here, and that is a year after launch developers are still having major issues coding for the PS3. They are still getting delayed left and right, still having the technical issues, etc. Yes, that's the fault of the developers, but it's still a problem no matter who's fault it is. I'm sure the PS3 issues will continue to diminish, but how long will it take?
