Hackers have taken over Call of Duty 4 on PS3 photo

If you play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the PlayStation 3, then be warned. A mob of hackers and glitchers have essentially overrun the game's online component, griefing the Hell out of the multiplayer and then posting Youtube videos of their nefarious chicanery. The videos tell people how they too can fly and walk through walls, helping the problem to propagate itself as others get wise to the unfair tactics.

"Apparently the new hacks are for flying (no clip), no reloads (endless supply of ammunition), god mode, laser sights and the ability to move through buildings," explains the Modern Warfare forum moderation team. "More mods may or may not exist at this time however. This is apparently devastating the community and is rampant ... The most affected game modes seem to be Search and Destroy but were reported to be in all gametypes. Hopefully something can be done to address this issue."

Infinity Ward has been made aware of the problem, stating that it hears the victims "loud and clear," and that it's looking into things.

I play Modern Warfare on the Xbox 360, so I don't know how bad things are on the PS3 side. It sounds like the game's being absolutely wrecked by cheaters, however, and I send out my commiserations to unlucky PS3 players having to deal with such nonsense. Have any of you been affected by these glitches? I'm interested to see just how bad things are over there.

This has been going on for a little while. I suppose all you can do is report them here, and hope for a fix.

This is odd...

Usually PS3 is tight when it comes to Hacking/piracy/virus related issues.

The problem is that the PS3 allows you to use any sort of hard drive, which is a hacker's paradise. Xbox Live is stringent in making sure every Xbox 360 has an "address" (console #), so that that box can be banhammered if there's modding and hacking going on.

I have not seen any of these glitches myself, but this does come after the game has been out for almost two years so it's imaginable that it could be hacked by now.

@Jonah

Each PS3 has a specific console # as well, it's called a mac address.

I have no problem with hackers I just wish they would do that on their own freaking servers. It pisses everyone off when they have to deal with some idiot hacking on a public server.

Mac addresses can be spoofed easily (VERY easily) like IP addresses. Its not illegal, just google it.

I know XBox Live can ban hammer the system itself by (I assume) serial number. I would think Sony can do the same, but I don't know if they can due to online not being set up like XBox Live.

Some buddys and I ran into a game where the guys was able to hop between our team and the other team. He'd teamkill us and it'd count for the other team. He'd kill us from the other team and it'd count for that team. We promptly went back to Hardcore Team Deathmatch. I've never seen that on CoD4 for the 360...

You let people remove the hard drive and put a new one in, you open the console to a world of hurt, as proven here. I believe there was an issue a while ago where people could give themselves unlimited ammo and health, too.

@ JonahFalcon - Well, I don't play MW1, but I do know that when a new harddrive is placed inside your PS3, the first thing that's done, is it's formatted, and stamped with a key that ties it to that PS3 model. Then you install the OS. I know this, because I can't just take my harddrive out of the PS3 in my house, and bring it over to my buddies and swap it out, without having to format first.

Pretty funny to hear it's being butchered though.

They call themselves “modders” and they claim they are bringing a “new” type of gaming experience to digital entertainment. Their quest, supposedly, is to grace gamers with sights never seen before such as flying, invisibility, and weapon tricks. Personally, I believe this group of individuals simply lack the skills needed to play any competitive game legitimately. I have met them in Gears of War 2 (actually made me stop playing Gears) and Left 4 Dead and to a man/woman they have never been elite players. Actually, their antics usually start once they realize they face superior foes. Valve and Epic addressed their game exploits with some patches, but I believe bans are the only real way to prevent them from destroying game experiences. As I mentioned, these players are usually not that good and whether they are bored as a result of constantly losing or because they care not one bit about destroying the experience (the ones I have met are often children who in many cases don’t spend their own money to buy games) for others is up for debate.
That’s too bad for Call of Duty players on the PS3, I know that on the 360 it has been circulated that one should immediately file a complaint when one encounters strange behavior on a game server (there is actually a complaint specifically for game tampering). Bungie has instituted bans, Epic has reset rankings, and Valve has patched servers/games (but there are bunch of new cheats: Ghost-slashing, power-shots, and team teleports). Frankly, these gamers suck nuts and I love beating them with legit tactics in spite of their cheating ways.

If devs want people to keep buying their games for the online component then they have to be maintaining the game. They should have been fixing and patching all of these glitches as they were discovered. Warhawk has almost no glitching... there was little to begin with and any glitches found were quickly patched. Resistance is another game where patches were forthcoming everytime major glitches were discovered and Killzone too. Minor glitches that don't affect gameplay... who cares... but when you have god modes, unlimited ammo and game altering glitches - patch if fast or you'll lose your future player base.

No wonder Activision doesn't want to make titles for PS3.
(( It costs something to make something. "PATCHES" ))

BTW what happens when you do ban their MAC Addresses.
Uh don't you want them to be able to play... ModernWarfare2?

Remember IW makes both these titles. /Captain Obvious

It happens on LOTS of games and systems (PC's...sheez!). It's actually pretty rare on the PS3. Jim (the author of this 'um article?), is a known PS3 BASHER (fess up Jim, you know it), and will write about ANYTHING negative about the PS3. Relax, a patch will come out if needed...just like EVERY other game (including almost all of my 360 games).

I hate to be "that guy" but I hate the spread of misinformation even more. People are right, yes, every PS3 has a MAC address (every network card does) but you can't ban by MAC. That address is stripped off and replaced as data travels over routers and switches.

I'm not saying there isn't a console ID, number, etc. that they can ban with, I am just saying that it isn't the MAC address.

Yeah I was getting pissed of at this.

People were camping on top of buildings impossible to get to without hack and sniping people.
One guy though was trying and he really sucked at it. He kept running to the same spot in the map while running and jumping into the wall I knifed him about 10 times that game and it felt sooooo good.

There are complaints about this in the xbox forum, too. Maybe I'm wrong but this is not that common in the xbox version just because you need the transfer cable from Microsoft, so the save files can be hex edited.

For instance need i remind you of Infamous vs Prototype? That was the most blatant descrimination i've ever seen :P

In actual news, yeah i've encountered a lot of it the last three days, it's been driving me bat shit insane as i can't do it/ don't want to in case i get hit with the ban hammer. It's put me off Call of Duty 4 for a while anyway, untill this is sorted, it pisses me off that they don't do it on private servers as these modders really are just ruining the game for others.

Why do that? These kind of hacks were on the 360 before too... And it's not the PS3/PSN that is hacked but a freaking save file that you replace with your current save file, or is it data file?(I don't remember, its been a while since ive seen the tutorial when i first heard of this shit hack)

I started noticing these cheaters just within the past few days. People are flying through the air, running through walls, and making themselves invisible. It has become nearly impossible to find a room to play in where there is not at least one of these cheaters. It's extremely annoying..

Dude, whut tha' fuck? How is saying that one likes Prototype better than Infamous bashing the PS3 when both games are on the PS3? and what does this article have to do with that anyway? Should no one report ANY news regarding the PS3 for fear of PS3 fan reprisals and insecurities? Anyone who thinks this kind of thing isn't going on on the 360 side of things does not play enough CoD4. I've been in many many games where people have been clearly glitching and modding. The most rampant are definitely the level "hacks" where someone can hop outside of the map with a sniper rifle equipped with bandolier and hang out, picking off targets at will. It's so frustrating, and there are a few maps that will cause me to quit the lobby before things even get started. Not to mention the number of controller mods out there that turn any single-shot weapon (m14, pistol) into a machine gun. Between martyrdom and 3xfrag grenade-spamming, playing CoD4 online makes for a rather frustrating experience of late.

Someone mentioned Gears earlier, and if that game isn't being constantly hacked and modded, ie, taking advantage of the absolutely retarded way Epic set up their servers... I don't know what is.

I, too, cannot wait until Modern Warfare. Hopefully they update and prevent many of these kinds of things from happening... and remove martyrdom from the game entirely.

They have been around for months. At this stage they are little threat to me, I usually get em before they can glitch and most times i can get em while their glitching. It REALLY pisses em off and they leave if they cant get their way. I hav'nt come across any hackers tho.
I'm suprised the PS3 is seen as the system that suffers this problem, most of the videos on youtube are xbox based.
