Hackers delight: new Wii Backup Loader swings wide the doors of piracy photo

I'm no so sure hackers need any encouragement, as they seem to continually find their way into fine products and mod them to their liking, but the Wii Backup Loader may actually make it possible even if your brain is pudding. Before I go any further I need to clarify that I do not support this, and you should pay for your games like a good little boy.

That being said, the word on the Wii Backup Loader is that it is a basic program that runs from the Wii Homebrew Channel and can directly load modded ISO's from the DVD drive.Course, you can't do it yourself untl you get your grubby hands on the new ISO loader and new ISO converter/modifier, but the means is there and it is easy, which will surely cause lots of illegal activity.

There was a story to accompany the video from the source (found at tehskeen Via Gizmodo), but the story seems to have vanished already. I know Nintendo already rolls in our money, but this is just a little too greasy for me to be cool with it. Of course, this is not to mention the vast number of people who this will be old news to -- modded versions of the system are not exactly a rare commodity. Are you plotting a way to use the Backup Loader to your advantage as we speak, or is it a bit much for you too?

[Thanks, Adam]

The R4 was a step too far for me. This is hopefully going to feel the full force of Nintendo's lawyers very quickly. No way can they argue that this is for anything other than pure piracy.

@Shael
Take your elitism and shove it.

I'm sure Nintendo will update to kill this. They seem to be very good at that.

The twilight hack that nintendo took 3 months to patch was broken within a couple of hours. Nintendo doesn't take wii piracy seriously at all.

Amusingly, the homebrew people tried to alert Nintendo of the flaw being used to run "backups" so that they might patch it. (See hackmii.com)

However, Nintendo has a shiny pair of blinkers on and doesn't make a distinction between homebrewers trying to learn how the hardware works and write interesting new software for it, and pirates who just want to be able to clone Virtual Console games and run copied commercial games. So the homebrew types got shunned, and eventually the pirates found out the flaw ... and bingo, just desserts for Nintendo and their oh so shiny blinkers.

Now the only thing left to see is whether this pans out into an R4-esque piracy-fest or not. Although the Wii needs some decent titles to pirate first...

I don't know. I would feel bad for ripping off nintendo. However, I feel absolutely no guilt in ripping off microsoft. As for sony...well I'm not sure why you would want to rip them off? What do they have that is possibly even worth stealing?

Nintendo don't care because they're making their money on the hardware. The software can be pirated to hell and back, Ninty will still be laughing all the way to the bank.

Nintendo won't take this seriously because they won't have too. 90% of all Wii owners don't even know what homebrew is.

I can't think of a single game that I'd like to pirate on the Wii. This is like hearing of a way to get free nude pictures of Anthony Burch.

I've honestly been meaning to load the Homebrew Channel to my Wii for a while so I can get some ScummVM on.

Actually they do.
It's difficult to prevent these things.
These patches are all Software based.
Once you know how to manipulate the software before that it wont be hard to crack the next one.

I'm more interested in a region-free booter for the HBC. The prospect of importing games rather than waiting months for the EU release is much more interesting to me than piracy.

I will always support original videogame products... When they're good products.

I'm not really interested in Wii pirate games (maybe a couple of them to try them out and see if they're worth $60). I'll buy ONLY those that are Great enough to be purchased.
