Hackers continue to ruin Valve? photo

I've said this a few times, but back in college I lived and breathed Counter-Strike. In fact, I'd even say I majored in the damn game. Well, one of the biggest turn-offs to me, after a while, was the rampant hacking and cheating that took place in CS. To continue this not-so-proud tradition, it seems some young hooligan hackers have decided to lash out on Valve and their much-maligned Steam by showing just how vulnerable the system really is ... allegedly.

From Next-Gen:

The owner of No-Steam, a site slanted against Half-Life and Counterstrike house Valve Software, claims to have hacked the developer’s servers, gaining access to sensitive info such as credit card numbers. No-Steam member MaddoxX claims to have gained access to credit card information, Valve balance sheets, cyber café and other files sensitive to both Valve and its customers.

"cIntX," who described himself as one of MaddoxX's "helpers" and answered a Next-Gen inquiry via MaddoxX's e-mail account, said that the hackers are not afraid of any legal repercussions. He added, "We are not happy [to exploit] Valve's security holes. We are just trying to show people how secure Valve actually is and how much [the company] is investing for your security."

It's also notable that the e-mail was injected with plenty of anti-Valve rhetoric, including claims that Valve "steals" consumers' money and the company's services and products "aren't worth" the money. cIntX also claimed that Valve deactivated MaddoxX's account "some years ago...without a good reason."

When asked what would happen to allegedly compromised credit card information, the "helper" said cryptically, "I'm not god I'm just a friendly guy."

Are these hackers justified in what they're doing, or are they complete a-holes for stealing our information?

I doubt that they have the ability to hack anything, apart from their own wangs. Just kids who think that the internet grants them complete and total anonymity.

Just so you guys know, I hacked the Destructoid server, and stole sensitive information about Niero's mother. But I'm not God, I'm just a friendly guy.

Differences between RL and Online

In RL, people have to die before a government will act.
Online, a company must be hacked before they spend cash on security. If this is true then it needed doing, blatantly. Once hackers give up on hacking OS's they'll move on to more common media, such as WoW (Which happens more frequent than is reported about). Sooner or later someone is going to scream "OMG Hacks!!11" or whatever, but it's necessary. From my viewpoint I'd appreciate companies focusing mainly on gameplay and just have a small team on security, then patch the hell out of it when it's out if it's viable. If it's steam it's automatic. So there's no excuse really.

stealing our credit info isn't a good way to support the 'valve steals consumers money' that they are trying to push. According to their arguement they are no better than valve now

I hacked Destructoid and got all of their customers credit card information. D'toid steals consumers money and the company's services and products aren't worth the money.

I legally own a copy of halflife. The very first of the thousand editions. While I have played about every single mod to halflife ever made including that really really obscure one you and your cousin Jake loves I have never installed a single hack or cheat ever. Hadn't been playing for about maybe a year and tried to log in to steam maybe 1 or 2 year ago. It said my account has been banned because of cheating. I didn't feel like starting complaining to support when they banned it for over a year ago and I couldn't remember where I had put my box with the cd-key so I just said fuck it.

I don't agree with hacking but a company that think it is okay to render peoples legally purchases copies useless should rethink what they're doing.

If they're actually telling the truth, and they make DAMN sure none of those details are used, or even examined, I think they did a good thing. In any other case, they probably ought to get good and lubed up, because valve is going to rape them hard. And they're assholes.

Complete a-holes. They sound bitter over some petty incident from the past and have built up some complex & a rationale that what they're doing is right and are taking it out on everyone else. I hope they go to prison and get their pasty "hacker" a-holes pounded.

I'd bet up to $100 of my fake internet money that they are just making shit up to impress their friends.

And to the person whose account was banned because of cheating: It isn't Valve's fault. It is the fault of other hackers who stole YOUR serial number. You were robbed by some "hacker" not by Valve. Someone used a key generator and got your key and then used it to go cheat in other peoples games and got banned. Valve had to ban that person because they were ruining the game for other people.

If only valve had introduced hardware locked Wiifriend codes they wouldn't have had to ban the account, just the offending machine. Of course if that were the case you'd still be waiting months for online play and the game you were most looking forward to would be fucking pokemon.

Also cocks.

why the steam hate? It works great for me, i like that it automatically updates my games for me and I can buy stuff online if I wish. I haven't been banned, maybe you should be more careful with your password.

Im torn on this. If they dont use the info they had access to then it dosent realy matter weather they did do it or not. if they do record and or use any of the info then they should be pinned to the empire state building by there balls. Regaurdless of there reasions or intentions if they haddent gone about telling everyone in such a 15 year old noob kinda way they might have actuly gotten what they wanted done weather they did it or not. Now they have only pissed them off and they probly will change some small part of it but also along with it Steam's lawyers are probly working riight now to find some way that hacking into those sencative databases is illegal and they will be nailed to the wall in a big way. I know they dont care but thats friggin retarded if ya ask me.

well thats my rant for the day why cause im board and this is what happens when im able to get board. cya

A-holes, whether they use the information or not. There's better ways to address your complaints with the service. If the guy had his account closed for no reason, what steps did he take to contact Valve and resolve the misunderstanding? It probably could have been corrected if he'd hand properly. The kind of guy who would hack Steam strikes me as the kind of guy who already does things to get his account banned. And honestly, "the company's services and products "aren't worth" the money"... Are people FORCED to buy games from Steam? If they don't want the services or products, they don't have to purchase them.

As for Valve behind hacked I HOPE these guys face some jail time because if my information gets leaked out I will raise hell. I don't see whats wrong about Steam I love it myself and have made many purchases from it.
