@Fotiori Listen, I got it that you feel like Sony's taking away your ability to use your console however you want and I respect your opinion, but hear me out on this. It FINE to mod your console for personal use so long as you don nothing ILLEGAL with it. But if you release a homebrew publicly that could potentially cause huge damage to Sony and many others, OF COURSE they're going to want to pull it down. Its common sense and just about every other company would do the same. Basically, if Sony deserves punishment for this, then so does every other company. Therefore, NO ONE DESERVES this so called "punishment". Its great to see people doing interesting things with technology but there are certain rules to these, just as there are rules to everything else. If you don't like it, thats fine but really, these rules were made to prevent any problems for EVERYONE. So lets all just call it a day and go back to enjoying our games alright? Goldenye 64 anyone?

he's not smart enough to hack his ps3 without getting banned from the psn basically. mine is fully modded. I still buy my games, but I hacked it for the pure joy of playing all my snes on my blackbox of joy

There's no way I'm going to start going with the store-bough pre-paid cards since I usually just want something worth $5-$10 in the Playstation Store, and the minimum amount you can buy around here is $20. I hate dumping more money into my account if I have no plans on spending it.
@pokota, the premise for your argument is based on the idea that the law is always just and that any problem can be solved through it. so either you believe that a call to arms is never justified and revolutions are always wrong because they are illegal, or your argument fails before it even starts. in either case, we disagree. corporate power can be just as tyrannical as any other.

By reading most of the discussion, it seems that in a nutshell, fortiori wants Sony to allow him to pirate games... Ok. I can sort of understand his point of not allowing Sony to "control what we do with our property", but he's talking about stopping people hacking/modding... I don't agree with that.
Well, since it's not directly hurting me, I feel sympathetic for Sony. This hacking bullshit is just showing that these people are the scum of the universe.
If this keeps up, I expect Sony will decide to shut down all it's video game, online, and entertainment services due to financial loss. Yes, it will be a victory for the hackers, but at what cost?

YAY for hackers who are making it worse for people who actually go about buying and dealing with companies legitimately, This is the same as stealing if people stop and think about it, what happens when someone steals from a company? said company has to make up the cost of the item that was stole, so how does said company make up the costs from the lost item? by raising the prices of all there other goods causing those people who do pay money for items to pay more.
Ultimately the hackers aren't hurting sony as long as people out there are willing to pay for the products sony will make back there money, If you really want to hurt a company like sony you stop purchasing there product not hack the system

Prepaid CC's in many cases dont offer the same sort of fraud prevention that many CC's these days come with by default. Keep that in mind. In other words, switching to prepaid cards actually wont help you if that number does get compromised - in fact you'll find it harder to make a case to get back any money stolen from "your" card.
Yeesh, I too wish this stuff would just stop. Sony got all sorts of bad press so can't it end there? A lot of people are suffering because of all of this: gamers, developers, maintenance staff, all of their families and LOADS more that no one would even think of.
I wish these hackers would put their skills toward fighting the organizations that DO actually screw over innocent people. Why not go after the Wall Street crooks who STILL haven't seen any jail time for utterly devastating the US economy and, as such, that of the rest of the world?? What about the credit card companies or mortgage brokers who fucked over TONS of honest people just to make a profit off of their suffering?? Sony is small potatoes when compared to these other evil bastards.

I still don't know how having Linux taken away justifies all this theft and tomfoolery. Linux ran horribly on the PS3 and I really doubt the number of users was up in the millions like it is for owners of the system. Sony saw it as a possible attack vector so they removed it. It's sad but not exactly the end of the world. They aren't disabling the ability to play PS3 games.
Fortiori seems to love trotting out the word 'rights' ever second post as his holy banner, but Sony has the 'right' to protect their financial investments as well. If the PS3 ends up being as heavily pirated on as the PSP then you can expect a lot of developers to flee.
