H.A.W.X. 2 as an 8-bit 'pew pew pew' photo

If you're looking to scratch that retro itch from the comfort of your desk chair (or wherever you're sitting right now), look no further than the Flash 8-bit version of Ubisoft's H.A.W.X. 2.

Designed by the Singapore-based indie developer Explosive Barrel, the Nintendo Entertainment System era-style top-down shooter feels and plays like just about every generic game in the genre. With that in mind, I'm absolutely terrible at it, despite getting a kick out out the old-school feel of the game's cut-scenes and "pew pew pew" action. You can even post your high scores online, which I won't be doing because when I wrote "I'm absolutely terrible at it," I wasn't kidding; I didn't even get past the first stage.

You'll probably fare a bit better, so check it out. H.A.W.X. 2 with all of its fancy current-gen graphics and triple-A production values hits shelves for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii on September 7. Has anyone had a chance to check out the demo yet? What do you think?

Sadly I would wager most every 8bit generic shooter I had for my NES was better and less generic than this. Nice try, UBI. I'd rather play TIGER HELI, bitches.

Nice job not reading the article.

I read the article just fine. I didn't say "Nice try developing this, UBI".

Are you saying that since Ubisoft did not develop this promotional flash game for one of their upcoming releases they have no responsibility for it whatsoever?

You'll notice the article is not hash tagged #Explosive Barrel, it's hash tagged #Ubisoft. No matter who developed it, UBI is putting it out there for the masses.

When GRiN developed Bionic Commando for Capcom and a sizable portion of the game's audience disliked the game who did they direct their complaints to? The hired gun developer or the parent company who is ultimately responsible for their franchise?

I wasn't even trying to burn the game. I was commenting on the line "the Nintendo Entertainment System era-style top-down shooter feels and plays like just about every generic game in the genre" and stating that personally I didn't feel it came close to the quality of most of the old generic NES shooters. Fire up Tiger Heli or 1942 or Legendary Wings or any number of other good NES shooters and tell me I'm wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to try and correct me though, I hope it made you feel good.

I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE. What'll be the battlefield? MW2? Soucalibur? Team Fortress 2? You name it.

I had more fun playing H.A.W.X. 2 by Explosive Barrel. That reminded me that PSN needs more shmups. I need more shmups on my PS3. At least one.

We shall meet at dawn on the field of onions, good sir. Prepare to be smote! I kid, I kid. I never play online. You would totally pwn my ass. Therefore I respectfully decline in order to save some face after my long winded overblown response.

Love,
Jaws

I like it. BTW, that game is definitely 16-bit. Also it's a flash game, so bits are irrelevant altogether.

Meh, I was pleased enough with that. No need to buy a AAA-game with AAA-failings. I've had a snack, I don't want a feast.
