Guitar Villain? Drum Villain? Shark Jumping Villain? photo

MTV acquires Harmonix. Future Guitar Hero games are possibly handed over to Neversoft for development. An eight-year-old owns "Psychobilly Freakout" on expert (rumor -- he's also having sex with your girlfriend). What other weird, potentially series-crushing developments can possibly happen next?

How about Activision trademarking "Guitar Villain" and "Drum Villain"? According to GameSpot, the application covers "computer game software in a variety of forms, including downloadable games, games sold together with controllers, arcade games, and games sold with electronic toy guitars." Oh dear.

While no further information has been revealed on what (if anything) these "villains" mean (Activision refused to comment; Red Octane maintains they're hard at work on the 360 version of Guitar Hero II), it's hard not to feel that the series is dangerously close to jumping the shark. With the success of the Guitar Hero franchise, it would be crazy to think that the series would go untainted. But this soon?

I would eat dog food out of a toilet bowl once a week if it meant seeing new Guitar Hero content more frequently than once a year, but it's still hard to shake these bad vibes I'm getting.

What, if anything, would kill the series for you?

Series Killers:
Less emphasis on music, and more on pimping my guitar hero
Massive in game advertising
MTV Generation hosts at every turn with trendy catchphrases
Top of the pops "rock" music
Tons of new age punk acts
Few if any grass roots bands

Series Makers:
Easter Egg where Pearl Jam busts in, Brutally murder's any would be host in sight, and proceeds to rip out the set in the name of an anti-MTV anti-corporate liberation movement. "Rock Coffee"

Agreed...
What would kill the series ? Well a better series of course !
And to me this sounds and looks like Harmonix are working on a Guitar Hero Killer themselves.

Next stop > Platform spanning, multi-instrument wireless orchestra beatgame
Or more likely > something way cooler !

1) If by Guitar Hero 5, they still haven't been able to get Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Journey on there
2) MTV produces the game

What would make the game
A concert mode where you play 12-15 songs randomized from the main list back to back with no break in between, in the Ultimate endurance trials

Kill it:
1)Start putting in songs that are not rock songs. I perfer to stay far away from country songs.
2)Them putting in any Good Charlettes song.
3)Having a larger selection of Emo bands.

Save it:
Same as what the guys before me said. Hopefully internet matchmaking on the 360 version. Also mixing Guitar Hero and Kareoke Revolution might not be a bad idea. We allready sing along to the song while jamming so why not? Or to make it easier, have second player sing.

I agree with every word Milofo just said, which is unusual.

As soon as it starts using very new mainstream commercial music. Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out in GH1 was cutting it close, but it was kind of isolated among the other songs and at least it had decent guitars.

kill it:

if they sell out like kiss did int he late 70's

save it:

Guitar Hero Pro came out and added fingertapping capabilities on the fret board. That way they can add more Van Halen tunes...

I don't think you could go wrong with new instruments and variations on the theme. Personally, I think "Guitar Hero: Blazing Banjoes" would rock so hardcore the case would have to include a warning label about incontinence.

Wurlitzer hero? Awesome. Fiddle hero? Awesome.

How about something like Piano hero? Something that actually teaches the instrument while you kick butt like the rockstar you are.

there was an interview somewhere on the internets about harmonix branching out from just guitar, and the possibility of drum villain/guitar villain online, its just amazing.

one person playin lead, one playin rhythm, one playin bass, and one playin drums? you can have your own talentless band/clan. maybe there could even be 'battle of the bands' type comps.

so long as the song selection remains tasteful, fucking up guitar hero is like fucking up toast. you gotta be real stupid to fuck up toast.

Three words:

Slide Guitar Hero.

Oh, and if they ever run out of Dethklok or Spinal Tap songs.
"Thunderhorse" accidentally ended up becoming one of my favorite driving songs ever.

I'm just wondering if the next Guitar Hero will have "Bitch School" or "Sex Farm Woman" on there...

And I nominate "Mermaid-er" as the next song Dethklok song too.

The new "villian" trademarks could just be to stop other companies from making them. a pre-emtpive strike if you will.

of course MTV will still ruin the franchise on its own

dvddesign you are the man. Dethklok is an awesome band/show. They must include "Dethfam".

I'm afraid the series is going to become to much about putting out as many additions as they can, first its 80's addition then 70's addition then it will go to love songs of the 60's, grunge hits of 90-93, Guitar hero Hootie and the Blowfish addition. Lets hope it doesn't get that far because if it does the only thing that will be able to bring the series its street cred back is a spinoff, Keytar Hero 80's synth pop addition.

It makes me nervous when I read some of the GH boards and I see comments like "I don't even recognize some of the bands....Cream, SRV, Boston, who the hell are they....put in more Greenday!!!" Then you see the comments like "Led Zep's overrated, put in more Dragonforce." I don't even know who the fuck Dragonforce is, maybe I should look em up.

As stated before, as soon as I saw MTV was going to be within smelling distance of GT3, I knew it was going to be crap. GT3 is destined to be mostly Hinder, Nickleback, and more rap and r&b than you can shake a stick at. At least we got two good games out of it.

I know I'm the only one here who will say this, but I would love more non-metal songs. I personally can;t stand metal. Just not my thing. I'd love a larger variety of music.

And yes, even certain pop songs.

I'm not sure if this would kill it or save it, but Guitar Hero: Tenacious D. Maybe a combo game where you mix playing the guitar and a little bit of action/adventure with the regular controller... or hell, play action/adventure with the guitar fret keys... kill the bad guy with a face melter. Just a thought.
