Guitar Hero World Tour dev on music peripherals: When theirs break, buy ours photo

By now, you've probably heard the good news: Both Microsoft and Sony have confirmed that they are assuring that all instrument peripherals will be compatible with all music games. That is to say that the Guitar Hero World Tour drums will work with Rock Band 2, Rock Band 2's guitars will work with World Tour, etc.

So with all of these options, what will you do? Both World Tour and Rock Band 2 look like solid titles, but whose peripherals will you use? Neversoft's Brian Bright has solved the problem for you.

"[You] can pick up the standalone version of World Tour," he says, "and use those instruments, and when they break they can buy ours."

Ouch. I've yet to go hands-on with World Tour's new peripherals, but they certainly look solid. For many, the RedOctane guitars have been the plastic axe of choice; Harmonix's first stab didn't go so well, with many reporting strum bar problems, along with other issues. Just last week, I cracked my first drum pedal of my Rock Band drums.

While I don't have them in my possession yet, I will say that the extended time I've spent with the updated Rock Band peripherals has been promising. The drum pedal is reinforced with steel, and the guitar itself feels more substantial. How it will stack up this fall remains to be seen, and will likely boil down to a matter of preference. But don't you love all of the trash talk?

Oh, wow. I'm with AKK - this just makes Neversoft look like assholes and actually turns me off to their product, even if their hardware IS superior. I hope Harmonix continues to take the high road (no trash talk, no exclusives, etc). Remember, it was Harmonix pushing for this cross-compatibility to begin with.

The new GH WT peripherals do look pretty sweet and true to life, but RB2's ion drum kit is gunna be bad ass! Now if only I could afford it...

If both companies decide to price the whole bundle at the same cost as a new console ouside of the US again it probably won't matter - they won't break while sat on shelves and in warehouses not being bought anyway.

"Isn't it called Rock Band?" "Well, we're calling it Guitar Hero: World Tour."

They're just pissy because they *have* to be compatible with ROCKBAND 2...

When Rock Band instruments break, they replace them. I could never get that kind of service from Red Octane. My GH3 guitar broke not long after I got it, then got the run around until I eventually just said "fuck it, I already have 40 guitar controllers anyway" and gave up even trying to get it replaced anymore.

One of my Rock Band drum pads cracked about a month ago...I called, sent in my old pads and got the new pads all in the time frame of less than 2 weeks.

The Guitar Hero franchise will never get another dime out of me

Yes I think we're all on the side of Harmonix here. I love Rock Band.

I may agree with you all, if the GH:WT guitars weren't shaping up to be an improvement over RB's. I like the clicky strummer that ensures me that it actually was strummed. And now that they're adding the solo frets that I love to play on so much there's really no contest.
And we broke our first kick pedal not too long ago. Not that I really care about the drums anyway, and it was broken by a friend that has been playing the drums for over 30 years (he's going to help me make sweet sweet love making music on World Tour).

I want this game to fail sadly and horribly. I was actually hoping the instruments WOULDN'T work with each other so more people would just buy Rock Band 2, but alas.

I thought it was funny. But then, like everywhere outside the US I'm pre-disposed against Harmonix due to their shameless price gouging and simple lies about cost factors.

My Rock Band drumset hasn't broken yet, and I've had it almost half a year. It's not like I don't hit it hard, I just don't play like a retard.
