While this trailer doesn't show any actual gameplay from Guitar Hero IV, it does reveal quite a bit about the upcoming digital jam session.

For one, as we all knew, it will add drums and vocals to the mix. As Activision put it in the trailer, it's "The Guitar Hero experience ... reinvented." Adding vocals and drums? What a brilliant, new idea. We are shown the new "most realistic drums" in action, and if my eyes don't deceive me, the guitars look slightly larger and more "authentic." And the use of Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" all but confirms its inclusion in the title.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't really interested in playing Guitar Hero IV (called Guitar Hero: World Tour, according to GameTrailers' page). Sure, Harmonix beat Activision to the punch with Rock Band and have done an excellent job; it's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the title.

But I called the Guitar Hero franchise dead after playing Rock Band mainly because of the social experience it was able to capture. If Neversoft can pull off a similar vibe, there's no reason why Guitar Hero: World Tour won't be an absolute blast. But how many "full-sized" instruments do I really need in my house? Will instrument incompatibility absolutely kill this game for you as much as it will for me?

Personally I don't have room for anymore plastic instruments and GH3 retarded note charts sort of killed the game for me, so I'm waiting for Rock Band II.

does it come with the awesome stage peripheral? Man that stage was so fuckin' GORGLENOX!

Doesn't interest me at all and I couldn't agree more with flamesofchaos. I don't need any more peripherals, the RB ones take up enough room. Well, and after GH3 when I think of the note layouts I just think of someone not knowing where the notes actually go and they just throw them anywhere they can. Which you know, playing drums, bass or guitar is more fun when it actually feels like you're playing the songs rather than playing notes that don't go along with the music.

The drums do look more realistic.

flamesofchaos said it perfectly. 3 sucked, and the only thing 4 could really add that RB doesn't have would be different songs. But, gasp, we get new songs every week anyway. I'm not shelling out ridiculous amounts of cash just to play a few choice songs. I've learned my lesson. :(

That trailer was made fo fail. I could use the drums, but alas, I have drums already. I'm sure Harmonix could make some use of the jack in the drums for the footpedal and split it out for cymbal use... or... double bass pedal? You'd think GH's heavy metal-driven game would tout such a peripheral... but then again they'll just release it later and make sure it doesn't work with any other peripheral to make a few extra bucks

Get rid of your RB set because GH4's will be much sturdier. For one thing, the drum pads are denser so they won't be nearly as loud as RB's drums. Also, RB was the first full band set to be put out but it was not the first conception. The developers of GH say that they've had this in the works since before the launch of GH3. Also, on of the developers said, and I quote, "Well, I thought we could be better [than RB] by not making you play the same three f--- songs 2,000 times over and over. I don't ever want to hear Nirvana and Weezer ever again. I'm sick of it." ~ Brian Brights comment in this month's issue of GameInformer.

Prediction, vocals will be ass, very accurate drums, 200x quieter, can actually drum roll on them, the guitars don't suck, and everything works with Rock Band.

Oh and the bass drum will actually be touch sensitive and will know how hard you press it.

@Psycho_Babble

Ok first off I want to just let you know that psychobabble was one of the best online games ever, and you are awesome for even knowing what it is.

Second, OF COURSE the developers had the idea since before GHIII. You know why? Because that was Harmonix's goal. And of course Harmonix was still partnered up with Activision at the time. Harmonix moved (and took their idea with them) to somewhere where they could better realize their vision. If you've ever played Frequency or Amplitude, you'd know that having multiple instrument tracksis something that Harmonix came up with, though it was not implemented with plastic instruments.

It was Harmonix' prerogative to whatever they wanted with that idea. In no way do I think that, just because the two companies were once collaborating, that it means one company should have any less a chance to use the idea over the other company. That said, I do think Hamonix could have put a better set of peripherals out and now, at least in my opinion, GH has the upper hand. Of course that's only because I don't know anything about the next RB.

"Record and release your own singles"

Um what? Record what? The guitar clicking? You taping on the drum set?

It would probably sound like the following.

I'm still gonna wait to see more info, gameplay and maybe even try it, it sounds good so far but it's still uncertain if it will deliver.

Fall 2008 seems quick. I expect an unpolished game, note charts that make me feel like I'm not playing the songs, retarded hard songs that aren't fun to play, nonsense boss battles, shitty drum set and a track set as good as we've seen on the Guitar Hero DS.

Fuck this game, fuck it up it's stupid ass.

Not to shamelessly promote my blog, however I wrote a very large article on GHIV, with some game play details included (also some details about the two "create your own music" modes).

The only way I'd buy this game is if the visuals and animations were completely unrealistic and unappealing, if the note charts were inflated to beyond comfort, and it claimed to be bigger and better, when it's really only just catching up. Oh, wait...

The drum set looks interesting, but Guitar Hero stopped being fun after part 2

Rock Band is fun, no matter your skill level. Guitar Hero seems to be about mastering relentless note charts to show the world your humongous e-peen in a youtube video.

Guitar Hero's day has passed. It's all about Rock Band now.

No no no NO, anyone who played guitar hero 3 realizes how shitty Neversoft is at making song charts. They purposely try to make the songs as hard as can be and not even fun. Harmonix FTW

What a coincidence, I just bought my first GH game today. Amazon has GH3 bundle for $60 as their "Deal of the Day" today. :) I'm way too cheap to buy Rock Band or even GH at full price.

Why don't they listen!? I said DOUBLE FUCKING KICK PEDAL! How are they going to have Van Halen and Dream Theatre and expect us to keep up on one bass drum?

And the Create-A-Track sounds like a lot of work, I guess I was kind of hoping I would be able to just upload songs from my flash drive and have it sort it out and make note charts, but then there is the problem of actually implementing that.

Honestly, I'm probably going to get GH4 and maybe the drums but that's really ONLY because I can't resist the song creating feature. I didn't even realize I really wanted it but the more I thin about it I do.

I'm not going to buy any DLC for it and I'll still do all my primary "virtual band playing" on Rock Band but really want to make and share some songs. It just stings to do so since I vowed to never buy another GH after the hatred I had for GH3. I would much rather make songs for Rock Band :[

Well hopefully this hits our fucking shores when it hits US shores. I am so sick of hearing about Rock Band which STILL hasn't hit our shores or the UK shores yet. Get fucked Rock Band, you already fail for me.

I really hope GH4 isn't delayed for the Europeans and Aussies like Rock Band has been.

Rock Band > Guitar Hero after II.

Rock Band is cool, except for the shitty song choices for download. I'm tired of all this tame classic rock/punk crap. They had the one Thrasher pack which was eh, but at least not as boring as the rest of the shit. Excluding the token Metallica pack that I never play because Metallica sucks

I don't doubt that Guitar Hero IV will be fun, I just know that I will not buy another fake plastic drumset. I love Rock Band, and I think the newer drum kits look great, but I just won't do it.
