Guitar Hero III details revealed: online play, wireless guitars confirmed photo

When Guitar Hero III was quietly (and maybe accidentally) announced last week no other information was available other than the fact that it would be released for all major consoles (Wii, PlayStation 2/3, Xbox 360).

Now, according to a Gamespot interview with Red Octane, some interesting details about this anticipated sequel have been revealed.

First off, I would have bet my first born child that the chance of Wii online support was slim to none. To my chagrin, the game is now confirmed to not only include some form of online play, but downloadable content as well. While my wallet is not very psyched for the latter, just the fact that third-parties are offering these features on the Wii is exciting (and surprising) news.

Hit the jump for more details, including info on the brand new (wireless!) guitar controller.

In response to questions about the new peripheral, Red Octane had this to say:

We're planning a lot for our new guitars for Guitar Hero III. First of all, the one feature that fans have been asking for the most is that, yes, they're going to be wireless. So now fans can finally rock out in their living room and jump off their couches and do all the crazy rock star stuff that they haven't been able to do in the past. And then, what we're doing with the guitars is there'll be a new shape and there'll be new colors. And what we're also looking at in addition to all those features is creating some more interesting guitars that are higher end, and some of them will be made out of wood, and so they'll actually feel like a real guitar.

Whether these guitar enhancements will apply to all versions is still unclear, but the fact that I can now “rock out in my living room” is super rad. To me, that’s what was lacking in the last Guitar Hero games. I can’t wait to look like more of a fool during a hardcore Dokken solo.

What do you think? Are you excited about Guitar Hero III? How do you feel about these new details? Are there any kind of Wii-specific features you would like to see utilized (built-in Wiimote speaker FTW!)?

Pokemon (Stadium? Or something like it) will be the first, I think.

The Wiimote should fit inside the guitar shell and make noises when you strum. It's so freaking obvious and if Red Octane doesn't do that then they fail.

I want them to force you to wave the guitar neck around to get extra points. Though, being here in the UK, I might have to start saving now to buy this.

I am excited, although i fear Neversoft is going to screw it up.

Only time will tell.

I didn't want to spend $$ on a PS2 just for GH. Now I don't, so no complaining on this end!

And with the wireless giiitar I'm so re-creating Marty McFly's stage antics (but not knocking over my speakers, the damn cats do that enough already)

I'm looking forward to Rock Band, but not this so much...Rock Band is being made by the real deal, Harmonix and is the real successor to Guitar Hero II. GH 3 doesn't seem to be stepping it up enough for another sequel..they are just milking a good thing.

Psst, hey Activision...

Howzabout fixing 360's GHII shitty patch first?

Just sayin...

None of us will buy your III if II doesn't work.

The speaker-on-guitar is a bad idea for two reasons:

1-The Wiimote speaker sounds like shit and we could expect the same quality sound from tiny speakers on a guitar. That would get annoying really fast.

2-A real electric guitar makes barely any sound when not plugged into an amp. So the sound coming out of the TV already makes the most sense.

@pkhilson,
That actually makes a lot of sense, good point.
I just get so excited when my little Wiimote makes a sound. But, you're right, the speaker does sound like shit.

After using the wired packed in guitar controller on my PS2 for a while, I finally purchased a second, wireless one. The sudden freedom to spin around all crazy like was fantastic.

While a real electric guitar barely makes any sound when not plugged into an amp in comparison to when it is, I'd still say it makes enough sound to warrant a strumming from the Wiimote speaker. I think it'd be kind of cool, to have the actual string vibration sound coming from there (softly) and the amplified, distorted guitar coming from the TV's speakers. But maybe that's just me.

@Dexter345

Depends on the guitar...if it is a hollow body electric, or even a semi-hollow body, it can produce quite a bit of sound naturally without amplification. As for it not being plugged in, I'm sure by them making a wireless version, they are trying to mimmick having a wireless receiver on your guitar to an amp.

waitaminute.

does this mean that microsoft is gonna finally spill the beans and let 3rd party mfg's make wireless peripherals?

and for all those quick to naysay at neversoft. have they ever really done you (that) wrong? from what i've seen their track record is fairly solid.

Pass, gimmie rock band, i'm done with Guitar Hero. Only reason Guitar Hero 2 (PS2) wasn't online was because Harmonix/RO couldn't get the game to a level they were happy with (though they did Amplitude just fine, no idea what happened with GH), hopefully Activision/Neversoft isn't jumping the gun or are just planning to add multiplayer as an afterthought.

I'm sure it'll come out fine, but if online didn't even make it to the GH2/360... well, I have my doubts. Maybe they just didn't have the right talent. who knows.

It'd be awesome if they did more things for motion sensing kinds of things. Like to get super super star power (working title) we would have to like...bounce of walls and go apeshit while strumming. GOOD LUCK PROGRAMMERS!

If this comes out on the Wii, perhaps I can retire my PS2 a little earlier than I planned..........nah, my PS2 will stay hooked up until I get a PS3...........in about 3 years.

@subnet6:

Yeah, I bought a source selector when I bought my PS2 so that I can have 3 systems hooked up at once. A highly-recommended purchase, by the way, in the off-chance that I'm in the minority here.

Wow... I didn't think we'd ever see downloadable content for a Wii game without some sort of hard drive. Maybe I'll finally have my Wii hooked up all the time once this comes out.

Well what do you know... a 3rd party game on the Wii that people can actually get excited about. Maybe we'll see another one in a couple of years or so.

I'm still annoyed they couldn't get the PS2 controllers to work with the PS3. Why would I buy a PS3 if I can't play the originals? BC DOES matter!

is guitar hero III like the game guitar hero encore or is an intirerly different game in itself?
i have all of them and that is the most addicting game i have ever played except grand theft auto sanandres.
those are my favorite games out. and wireless controllers are already out because my friend joey has
a white one that he bought separate from the disks and games itself.
and some how from the store he bought it from he got guitar insurance.
he said that and he is 18 but is that like even possible to have that on a type of game controller..
