Guitar Hero II song packs expensive: We are part of the problem photo

The Guitar Hero II 360 song packs went live today -- three songs per pack, each pack is 500 points. That's like, six dollars and change for three songs. In some cases, songs you might not even want.

Pack 1: Bark at the Moon, Hey You, Ace of Spades
Pack 2: Killer Queen, Take it Off, Frankenstein
Pack 3: Higher Ground, Infected, Stellar

These are all tracks from the original Guitar Hero; while it should be noted that the songs do contain Guitar Hero II style co-op tracks (bass or rhythm guitar are playable), it's of little consolation. You can buy the original PS2 game for $40 new and even cheaper used; to build that same song library (including bonus tunes) using this pricing, it would cost close to $100.

I can't even fathom how much ecstacy was being snorted when the decision makers behind this pricing decided consumers would be okay with this great service. If you pay for this s**t, you are a f**king a**hole and you are part of the problem (no offense if you've already been raped this morning). You're sending the message to publishers that this is okay, that you'll bend over and take anything they have to offer.

Vote with your dollars -- go buy a PlayStation 2.

But hey, "Bark At The Moon", "Higher Ground", and "Hey You" play gloriously in HD. :D

Call me an asshole then. Never owned Guitar Hero for PS2...and I want these songs. And they know it, and they know I'll pay that ridiculous amount for it.

Ugh, pack 1 is the only one I'd want, and I don't even like Bark at the Moon that much...

Take it Off and Stellar SUCK so much that I wouldn't bother with the other two at all, despite good supporting tracks.

If they're going to bundle a shitty song in every pack, I'll be skipping a lot of these, I guess...

I wonder if they're going to be taking submissions for original songs. I'm in the middle of writing a song called "Horse Armor" right now. It's bad ass...

It's a drag that charging this much for a little extra content is a reality; in addition, it's even more depressing that there are enough people willing to pay the price that, in all likelihood, the situation won't change.

Well sucks to be a 360 owner (not a PS2) and lover of Guitar Hero....first Guitar Hero 3 coming out in the fall (completely making the idea of downloadable content stupid, cause wouldn't the idea of downloading replace buying a new game?) and now over priced, bend over and make you their b!%@# type of microtransactions...oh you got to love it!

While I agree that these pack should be discounted at least 50%, is it really cheaper to go buy a PS2, guitar, and GH1 for someone that has a 360 only? I don't think so...

Don't get me wrong, this is an ass rape, but if you have no interest in anything PS2, I really don't think that option is cheaper. Besides, what kind of tool would buy every song pack released? (GH fanboy maybe?).

It would be best it they released the songs individually for 75 points each. If my math is correct (what retard came up with 1 point = 1.25 cents?), that even undercuts iTunes by a nickle. But you can't really load a GH track to your iPod, so....meh.

Anywho, I'm almost tempted to buy pack 3 because I'm THAT big of a Bad Religion fan. But then, I'm not buying it for the same reason. Oh the paradoxes punk rock weaves within me!

I own both GH1 and GH2 for PS2 and was still seriously planning buying it again for 360. Then they said it wouldn't have Live co-op. I said to myself "That sucks but at least it'll have downloadable songs.".

Now this.

I WOULD have bought some old GH1 songs for around 100ms points each (despite the fact that I already technically own them on PS2) just for consolidation sake but at that price? Fuck no. And if that's what I'm to expect for NEW songs then just forgot it. I'm seriously not buying it on 360 because of this.

Wow, this is gonna have an effect on whether I even buy the game or not. While I'm not a huge fan of the pressed setlist, I enjoyed the gameplay and was looking forward to what would be offered in future songpacks. But not at those prices.

Hell, DDR Universe, doing pretty such the same thing to the songs workwise, sells em for a much more reasonable 100pts per song.

This is just one of many examples of the complete rip-off that is the live marketplace. While I guess movies are probably decently priced, it seems like downloadable game content is all at least double what I would be willing to pay.

Especially in this case where a lot of people already own guitar hero 1, the price to play the stuff you already own again is killer.

So hear me! If Destructoid really thinks this is as damn shameful as I do. Then please help us fight this. Keep posting articles about it. I agree with unstoppablejuggernaut, thought I may not be as insane, haha. You have some solid points, we seriously have to dig in and puch against microsoft as a gaming community.

Whenever you are on Xbox live in Gears of War, Halo, or whatever your game of choice is, bring up these facts. Get more people knowing about this so we can get something done about it. I would say we should try to get EA in on this too, but they would ask MS for money to support them.

Wait, so if I already have the 360 version, it'd cheaper for me to plunk down $120 for a ps2 and 40 bucks for the original to play these songs? And that'd be better than paying the 6 bucks?

Ah, I'm just being a dick.

Honetly, I think the pricing is a huge rip, I'm not buying them. I'd think about it if it were 2 bucks a song for previously unreleased songs that I actually liked.

Damn, are they in cahoots with EA or something?

Several reasons why I am NOT an asshole despite buying all three packs.

1) It's my goddamn money. Don't tell me what I can or can't buy.
2) iTunes is 99 cents per song. These are $2.08 each. Whether you see it as a mere $1.09 difference or an over 100% markup is a matter of perspective.
2.5) iTunes doesn't give you 4 levels of rock-out-with-your-cock-out play-along-ness.
3) I dig all but one of the songs released today, but there are a lot of songs from GH1 that I wouldn't/won't pay for to play on my 360.
3.5) Also, cocks.
4) With these tracks you get co-op tracks and the ability to raise your career score on the XBL leaderboards.
5) If you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT!!! I will think no less of you.

The sweet, sweet irony is that I bought my GH2 from Circuit City, and got a 1600 MS point card for free.

So now I have to blow the whole card on these overpriced song packs? I'll pass.

@ohgr89: Your comment made me laugh out loud.

As I’ve said before...I’m so glad that I’ve had a PS2 for six and a half years now, and that I was able to buy the games on PS2. Sure, they lacked downloadable content, but they also didn’t ask users to pay through the nose for it. Jesus. Over $2 per song? I certainly hope the PlayStation Store doesn’t charge that much when Guitar Hero III comes out this fall.

I think it wouldn't be so bad if the three songs were from Zep or ACDC, maybe specific band packs.

But like another poster, I'm also curious. If everyone is going apeshit, what would most of you consider fair? A buck a song?

For me, I'm not really surprised anymore. I mean, a large coffee at Starbucks is 4 bucks, renting a game is 8, gas is around 3 dollars a gallon..etc. The thing is, I get a bit more angry at the gas and coffee thing because those things only last a short while. You own these songs for the life of the console. I don't know.
Necros's Avatar

I would have considered buying these, despite my ownership of GHI, if only for the enhanced co-op/versus options in GHII, but this is too far out of the realm of an impulse buy. The price needs to drop to at least 400 points, preferably 300 points. That's not even the ideal 99 cents per song iTunes model, but it's more reasonable.
