Guitar Hero DLC subscription fees? Activision is up for 'em photo

Would you pay a subscription fee to have fresh Guitar Hero content delivered to your console? Activision is assuming you would, as it is taking DLC subscriptions into consideration for the future.

Publishing CEO Mike Griffith explained the plan during Activision Blizzard's Analyst Day:

Looking even further out, we're exploring new models, like an annual pass subscription where players can subscribe and get a certain number of songs downloadable each month.

It looks like Activision has seen the future, and that future is making a shedload of cash off the back of each new release with DLC. ActiBlizz should give Namco a call, they're all over that sh*t.

"We've learned that the consumer still has an insatiable appetite for more," stated Griffith. "Consumers have downloaded over 20 million individual songs for the franchise, and they still tell us they want more."

They did want more, Mike. That's why they all bought Rock Band

Seriously though, would you pay a yearly subscription fee for more Guitar Hero content? If it works out cheaper than individual DLC packs, it might be interesting, but you'll likely never know what you've signed up for until the DLC is released. I wouldn't want to put down a handful of cash up-front only to be realize I paid for twelve months of Limp Biscuits.

As long as the prices go down from those songpacks, it's all fine by me :-)

If it is executed correctly with a flat fee and a wealth of quality tracks, this could be a great development for music games.

But, alas! This is Activision we speak of! They are greed, and will milk this for all its worth!

No. No no no no. When this goes into effeect, too many people will bitch about weeks/months with shitty songs that no one wants, and there'll be a huge backlahs against it. Just no.

If Rock Band did this I'd be all over it, I think people suggested it when Rock Band first came out, but it never happened. There are people buy all the Rock Band DLC as it is.

If they let me buy individual songs then I would buy more songs.

jestarinc said it all. This could be good but it probably wont be. At least they seem to be making it optional. I just hope they dont charge a ton for individual songs to 'encourage' (force) you to subscribe.

Might be interesting from the price war perspective, also I bet the first months would be incredibly amazing songs.

At first the idea turned me off greatly, but then I thought about it; for some people it would be great. I personally don't fancy a great enough percentage of the music either of the companies puts out to justify this. So, as long as we have the option it's not such a bad idea.

Hey, I've spent like $300 on every DLC song for Rock Band, so I'd do anything that makes me look like less of a fool. Even $20 a month would have saved me money.

I'd rather just pay for individual albums and songs. I don't want to end up paying $50 for a subscription and end up getting, as Jim said, tons of Limp Biscuit...Bizkit...whatever. Or Avril Lavigne...*shudders*.

I'm fine with the iTunes-style model. I buy a song I want, it's mine, that's it.
