Guitar Hero 3 tracks announced photo

Hot on the spandex-wrapped heels of the Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80s track details, Activision have released the first set of tracks for Guitar Hero 3.

Things are looking pretty eclectic at this stage, and there definitely seems to be a ramping up of the number of original recordings too, for which we are to be truly thankful. I need a karaoke impersonation of Matt Bellamy like I need a rotting corpse in my car on a hot day.

The revealed tracks are as follows.

Originals

Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
The Metal - Tenacious D
My Name is Jonas - Weezer
Knights of Cydonia - Muse
Cult of Personality - Living Colour

Covers

Rock And Roll All Nite - Kiss
School's Out - Alice Cooper
Slow Ride - Fog Hat
Barracuda - Heart

Details from the press release after the jump.

ACTIVISION SHREDS NEW DETAILS ON NEXT GUITAR HERO™ GAME

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Come Out, the Third Installment of Guitar Hero Rocks to A Whole New Level

SUNNYVALE, CA – May 23, 2007 – After warming their amps in the basement garage to rocking sold out shows at Stonehenge, fans of Activision, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) wildly popular Guitar Hero™ franchise will now be able to shred like never before with the next iteration of the game that will be available this fall. The new game will be released on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Wii™ video game system from Nintendo.

While continuing to retain all the key features from their prior legendary performances, fresh downloadable content will be offered on multiple platforms, and players can now shred to a killer set list from many of the gnarliest rock songs ever recorded.  Delivering more master tracks than ever before, strategic partnerships have been secured with all the major and independent music record labels and publishers to allow unrivaled access to their deep history of music catalogs, along with supplying artists’ original recordings for even greater authenticity.

The initial list of face-melting awesomeness includes:

    * Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
    * Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
    * Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
    * The Metal (by Tenacious D)

For the first time ever, Guitar Hero fans will also be able to thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform.   The exclusive Gibson guitars will include innovative features such as removable faceplates that will allow fans to later personalize their guitars and make it their own, and a new button color design that will be integrated for an even greater authentic feel and rock experience.  Gibson Guitar’s Les Paul model will be the battle axe of choice, and an industry standard for all rock gods on the Xbox 360™, PLAYSTATION®3 system, and Wii™.  After much anticipation, PlayStation®2 system fans will also be receiving a new exclusive shape as well, the classic Kramer guitar, also a Gibson brand, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics, and construction for furious finger fretting.

“The development team at Neversoft has been exceptional, and we’ve been able to incorporate a host of fresh new online and multi-player game play modes, along with exciting content into this version of Guitar Hero that our fans have been asking for.  Also, many of the top bands and songs we’ve tried to get in the past are now on board, and we’ve definitely got some giant aces in the hole to say the least,” said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane.  “In addition, offering a new line of Gibson wireless guitars for each platform is going to truly add to the authentic rock star experience like no other.”

Elite Beat Agents had a HORRIBLE soundtrack!!!

There was only like one good song and I believe that was by Jamiroquai.

HELL YES!

If not for the fact that they've won me over with this being Guitar Hero 3, they sold a copy by putting Cherub Rock in there. The rest of the game could be shitty Xmas cover songs (Who wouldn't want Brenda Lee on GH3?) and Cherub Rock would be totally worth it.

DvD Im glad to see you're a Pumpkins fan. If you want to listen to a new song off their new album coming out in a month or two, search for it on digg.com.

It's not that bad... for only having two original members.

I would just like to 17th the notion that I'm quite excited for this list. I too wish the Muse song were instead pretty much anything other than Knights of Cydonia (Assassin a good choice, though maybe better for drums later on...), but I'll take what I can get. Lookin forward to Barracuda as well...

dun digga dun digga dun digga dun digga dun Dun DUN DUN!!

The only question now is do I continue to get it for PS2, or do I upgrade to Wii? Graphics are possibly the least important element of GH, but I worry that continuing to support a franchise on a console being phased out is dangerous. Thoughts?

I thought Guitar Hero was about the metal! Where's the metal? Between this tracklist and the one for the 80s version, it looks like Guitar Hero has lost the metal.

I like the Rolling Stones and Kiss and the Police as much as the next guy, but these songs don't exactly feature blistering guitar tracks. Kiss' entire career is based on 3 chords. And do the goddam Beastie Boys (or Flock of Seagulls) even have a guitar player? Where's the metal?

I guess it was too much to ask to see metal get some mainstream respect, either in the 80s or the 0ughts. It was a nice franchise while it lasted.

I own two of em. =) And I agree!!!! (three extra exclaimations to prove mah point)

PS2 = better than Wii IMO

@rdaneel72

GH2 was pretty heavey on the metal (see what I did there...) but everyone seems to complain about that track list so they've probably dialed it back this time. Personally I liked more of the songs in GH2 more than GH1 but that's because I like playing metal (in the game not real life), and hate most classic rock songs. GH2's track list wasn't as varied as the first one's but they were stronger songs to me.

I found the Aeroplanes fly high box set for my brother for only 20 bucks last year. Needless to say, I bought it.

Also, fuck Smashing Pumpkins and fuck Billy Corgan.

Well the Wii vesion will have downloadable content so therefore the Wii seems like a better choice. Unless you don't want to buy ANOTHER guitar controller, then go for the PS2 version but game only.

@Snaileb,

You got no idea... I'm all over this new album. I own the Aeroplane box set, from it's initial printing, for only one song. I bought it because I'd already bought all the import singles except the one for "Thirty-Three" which I couldn't find as an import (this was 1997...) So, I bought the Aeroplane box set exclusively for I think "Transformer".

And I'd kill to have complete versions of a few songs from "Pistachio Medley"

Fuck Iha for being a tool. He knew that Billy was a ego maniac and put up with it long enough to make a shit load of cash. He should've suck up his ego and pride long enough to make money again. Oh well.

If they were going to put a NIN track on there, I'm kinda iffy on what to choose. I like his more electronic stuff, but you can't interpret that on a guitar, at least not like Jordan was. Maybe Wish or Last I guess, but nothing past TDS at all. I think the hardest part with NIN is that he mixes so many different compositional styles together, it'd be hard to have a GH-ish song out of his music, since you'd only play during the chorus or something like that. Shit from Broken or PHM might work, but I would get SO tired of playing Head Like a Hole very quickly.

I can't believe that they didn't pick "Tribute" as a D song. Tribute is easily one of their best, and one of my favorite songs period.

I bought it for Mouth of Babes and Aerosplane I think.. I was only 13 or 14..I can get you the Pistashio Melody from my wife. She claims to be a bigger fan than me. LIES.

Also, for NIN, The Becoming, from TDS. Awesome. (you do know that song is about Darth Vader right? Go check out the lyrics.) And everything from PHM gets played out here in FL on the radio.

Also, I must say, I was listening to Tribute 3 minutes ago, and I fucking agree. That or Double Team. The reason for The Metal being there, I think, is because there are no curse words/edited for radio. That's my take.

Music is fun.

They probably put the metal, my fellow Arrested Development lover, because it had the least swearing and it is one of the few Tenacious D songs that could be considered serious out of context. But I would have loved Tribute or something else, but still.

Metal fans are just going to have to cope with the fact that as Guitar Hero games are made to appeal to a broad audience, there's going to be a variety of music. I think they did well with the first two and well with this set list so far. Sorry, but your favorite little niche bands are never going to comprise the majority of GH songs. They'll throw you guys a couple bones, jeez. How can anyone bitch about having a list with the songs mentioned here so far? Sabotage, Paint it Black, Cult of Personality, all original recordings? Some of you are freakin' insane.

HUGEST pumpkins fan here, and its good to see i have company. im a lefty guitarist tho and i wish they would just fricken make lefty controllers for the game so my whammy bar isnt upside down!!! its such a pain in the ass!!! its bad enough trying to buy real guitars this way, cut me a break!!! but yeah, some NIN or even some floyd or queen would definitely be ok by me. over and out, davey wavey (_)_)=====D

I. Am. PUMPED.

The first time I heard “The Metal” by The D, I said to myself, “This song would kick ass in a Guitar Hero game.” And now it’s a reality. I’m also stoked for the 60s/70s rock angle...Stones, Heart, Kiss, Alice Cooper...that’s my favorite genre/period of music...and I’m 20, Doomtrain. I’m sure these aren’t even the best tracks in the game — they say they’ve got a few aces in the hole, and really, with how successful the first two games were, we have no reason not to believe them. Man, I can’t wait until “this fall”!
