Guinness makes up award, gives it to Batman: Arkham Asylum photo

At one point, I feel like the Guinness World Records meant something, with people vying to grow their nails longer than a record holder. Or shove more ping pong balls in their mouth than the last guy. Or fart the alphabet.

Apparently not anymore, as Batman: Arkham Asylum has been awarded a Guinness World Record for the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever." Yeah, we know -- there really wasn't anyone keeping track of this stuff, but you have to hand it to them... the game is pretty damned good.

In fact, it seems the award was handed out based on the game's Metacritic average which currently stands at 91 percent. With that, our staff more or less agreed, giving it an average score of an 8 out of 10. But to really know what we think of the game, you'll want to read the review to find out of it's really the best super hero game ever. (Hint: Probably.)

What a coincidence: I just received the award today for best lead designer who has never worked on a videogame project. I'll have to take everyone out for a beer.

Wait, a batman game that doesnt suck?

I dont see how this got into Guiness though, even an average of scores is still completely based on opinions and theres no surefire way to measure it. Even if another game comes along with a higher score, its relative to the time the game came out and the public opinion. Its not like shoving X amount of dimes up your nose.

"Most critically acclaimed superhero game ever", lol

that seems kind of specific... do they have one for every genre? Or did they just get paid for some advertising?

I'm eagerly awaiting the letter announcing me as record holder of "Person who I think is most awesome ever".

@-PL- With the previous early review-score shennanigans, it wouldn't surprise me if they were paid off for this one.

This may be some BS award from Guinness but hot damn Arkham Asylum shows how it's supposed be done. It really raises the bar on the comic book game genre.

so at least destructoid tried its best to get this a lower score. Problem is that the only games I can think of that would challenge it is Batman NES, X-men Legends and Spiderman 2.

So is there going to be an honorable mention to the prior record holder, Freedom Force?
