GamePolitics posted an article earlier announcing that the Guinness Book of World Records would once again include gaming records. This would be the first time that the book has included such things in about twenty years, and many would say it's a step towards legitimization of our past time.

Of course, we can't help but get the feeling that any attention Guinness does pay to gaming will shadow in comparison to the fantastic work Twin Galaxies has done in the fifteen years it has existed. Inevitably, it will be seen as a pittance towards the growing number of gamers around the world, and the book will continue to focus on The World's Fattest Elk and The World's Largest Boil Attached To The Back Of James Brolin.

I think this is a bad idea. How many games are there out there? Are they going to public records for each? And if not (and obviously not), then how will they decide which games are worthy? They might as well start handing out records for Most Times Watching Titanic, or Most Failed Attempts at Breaking a Record. Then again most of the records in Guiness are stupid anyway; they make me feel proud not to be a record holder.

First in 20 years? I can remember seeing Shenmue in there as most expensive videogame made, so it can't possibly be that long ago. D:
