Word. Panzer Dragoon, Deathsmiles, Ilaruga...just give us some more of those, Japan. Especially Panzer Dragoon.
Honestly the only company that I would have given this game to is Netherrealm. Mortal Kombat's story mode was great. I'm not just basing that on fighting game standards. It was a well designed well paced story which took me completely by surprise. I would give it to them so they make a great single player experience with strong multiplayer to boot.
Honestly Netherrealm has made great strides in the fighting game genre while Japanese developers are still stuck in the 90s.
Well spoken rant from someone whose clearly never played a fighter beyond TEH STRETT FUGHTUR
If gameplay makes the fighter, then Arc System Works is fine. They're pretty consistent on delivering some of the best fighters. BlazBlue and Guilty Gear are incredibly technical, highly polished and very popular fighting games. ASW also made some great licensed fighting games like Fist of the North Star for PS2.
And then you mention Netherrealm....who has a history of producing a single game. MK9 isn't really bad, but it isn't the best in the gameplay department, and it is the 9th installment of a fighting game series that is rather well known for the fact that it sells using gimmicks such as hyper violence. The MK series has historically been pretty lacking in the game play department. If MK9 is "great strides", while Street Fighter, Melty Blood, Blazblue and Guilty Gear is "stuck in the 90s", I'd prefer to be stuck in the 90's with them.
TROLOLOLOLO
get the fuck out with that bullshit.
MK??? MK will never ever top any of the top fighting games that were released in japan.
Tekken Tag 2,Virtua Fighter 5,Soul Calibur V,The King of Fighters XIII,Blazblue,Super Street Fighter IV AE.
and classics like Samurai Shodown Series,KO98UM,2002UM,Guilty Gear Accent Core, and many more.
"Honestly Netherrealm has made great strides in the fighting game genre"
how??? lol im sorry but i think your talking way way up your ass.
and Blazblue actually shits on MK story. the only reason people like you don't like it is because of the "stupid character" design crap hur durrr.
play those games and come back if MK has made any impact in the fighting game genre in any fucking way.
The thing that Mortal Kombat brought to the table was quality, open gameplay, content, tons of great characters, and awesome DLC as well as free DLC. Capcom and Arcsystem, while I do love their games, are very bare bones in the terms of open gameplay, and Capcom with content. They are very dial a combo and memorization really alienating new players from ever playing with the experts. I will always love Mortal Kombat 9 for that reason, it made that game completely accessible to almost everyone. My friends are able to jump right in with me and have a damn good time and I am too, where as in Street Fighter/BlazBlue I have to curve my skills on almost everyone I play. If they could make SF and BlazBlue more accessible in more then just PvC fights I'd be more inclined to agree that they were the better fighters, but I think MK wins that award on all fronts.
No offense to them, but maybe they need to look to their own country for that too, if they're worrying as much as they seem to be about this, since Japan makes far more fighting games then the west seems too.. I mean what do we even have these days besides Mortal Kombat?
Flawless logic.
It breaks my heart that Devil may cry is getting turned into another boring hack and slasher.
I completely agree... up until the new Devil May Cry. It's not out yet and from most of the videos I have watched it may be pretty decent.. granted I STILL think Dantes new look is just awful. It still is beyond me why you would take everything about a character that made him unique and cool and throw it out the window, also, terrible looking devil trigger, but everything else looks fantastic.
While he seems to be quite the troll, I can sympathize with able to think. Seeing as this game is canon, it's likely to ruin the plot Persona 4 worked hard to build. I mean come on, "lets come together and fight for no reason" is what it sounds like so far. I'm hoping that isn't the case. What I don't agree with is MK being better than fighters from Japan, that's a good joke. Skullgirls looks VERY promising so far though, I can definitely see that being pretty good.
MK has more stuff to do then MvC or Street Fighter. It has a long single player story mode that is better then any other fighting game. It has the challenge tower which teaches different ways to play. While the online was broken the first few months the king of the hill mode was freaking awesome.
So no the pure gameplay mechanics aren't as good as lots of other games but MK offers more to do then anything else out there.
The other thing I meant to say before was the big Japanese fighters aren't embracing new technology like DLC and patching. Instead they are releasing a new disk without adding enough to make it worth the price. I'm probably a little butthurt about buying MvC3 and having Ultimate be announced right afterwards but can you blame me? I was promised DLC and got a whopping two characters.
I feel that Japan is too stuck in there ways and aren't trying to do anything different. Think about how awesome it would be for MvC to have a story mode like MKs but penned by someone like Bendis. I just expect more for my money then a few basic modes and uninspired online play.
Also I'm shit at fighting games unless they're Smash Bros Melee (I tried SF4 but dear God that rabbit hole goes WAY too deep for my liking, I can't even get past those "training" levels), so I hope they have decent entry level controls.
Nice save there dude. First comment reeked of troll and blind fanboy. Second comment is well thought out and makes very valid points. Though I'm not what you'd call an avid MK fan (i.e. like almost all other fighting games mentioned here more), I do agree with you that MK9 had alot of fun alt modes that are uncommon in fighting games (I'm looking at you, Test Your Luck).
That being said, I'm hoping Arc will finally come out with a proper sequel to Continuum Shift. I wants to play the Jubei!
