Big news for fans of Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy series)! Speaking with MTV News, the director revealed that he's finally ready to shift into the games side of the entertainment industry.
"One of the things we're announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company. We're going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting," he says.
"It's not a development deal. We're going to do it. We're doing them. And we're going to announce it soon enough." Consider me excited. My love of bizarre creature designs and hatred toward rampant CGI in movies has turned me into a fan of del Toro's work over the years.
He's got the pure imagination needed to make truly interesting games, which is why I sincerely hope this deal is for a brand new IP. What genre would you like to see del Toro tackle?

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I'm interested in seeing what kind of a world Toro makes.
A Dreamfall/TLJ-style game written by del Toro? Please!
What? Boom Blox was awesome
Boomblox was awesome, one of the best Wii Games to date, and one of the best games to come out of the generation. That was the game that started my "I need a Wii" motion.
Hmmmmm....this could be a neat thing. We shall see.
Sign me up.
"technically and narratively very interesting"
^^ The greatest games are neither of these things.
Man, this guy directs one film that is half decent with a back-catalogue full of crap and suddenly he is the next big thing (even in a completely different medium)? Either way, it looks like he needs to be less in the directors seat.
He's not directing the Hobbit anymore. Thank god.
But he will be directing At the Mountains of Madness (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) produced by James Cameron (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) using his 3D technology (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
At any rate, what video games need is a true storyteller, one who knows how visuals really effect the viewer as filmmakers often do.
Maybe he'll make a Hellboy game? The last one was mediocre, but there's still huge potential in that universe. Or maybe a game based on the HP Lovecraft book 'At the Mountains of Madness'? He's been trying to get a film off the ground for years with no success. Perhaps he'd find it easier to get funding for a game version?
Whatever. I trust this guy and eagerly await whatever it is he's going to do next.
