Guild Wars 2 coming later this year with betas in spring photo

I doubt that it will come as a surprise to anyone, but ArenaNet have revealed that Guild Wars 2 will indeed be stealing many of our lives this year. It seems inevitable that I'll be spending a significant portion of 2012 entangled in MMOs. With the first closed beta now over, even more people will be getting a sneaky taste of what Tyria has to offer with additional beta tests.

"Select" members of the press will be invited to participate in the beta soon and then, in March and April, the beta will be opened up so even more folk will have a chance to participate. There's no release date yet, but "later this year" is enough to get my juices flowing. Now I need to go and find a goat (or child) to sacrifice in order to become a select member of the press.

Considering TOR brought nothing new to the table (but is fun, for a while), I'm now excited for Guild Wars 2. Well, that, and getting 90 in Mists of Pandaria.

TOR was a nice distraction, but Guildwars 2 is my next soul-consumer now that skyrim is done with.

I really hope this means a May or June release.

Many, but I don't think it'll be as many as people seem to believe with their entire soul. People are laying it on real thick that this game is going to be the shit, but theres just no proof it won't come and fizzle out like the last one did.

Guild Wars didn't fizzle. A total of three campaigns, an expansion, a thriving and competitive PvP scene, continued seasonal events today, active community, no.. it has far from fizzled.

@flintmech not to mention Guild Wars alone pays the server costs for every MMO NCsoft is running.

@Flint
Again, Guild Wars 1 was not a real MMO - the developers themselves even referred to it as a "Coop RPG" - a la Phantasy Star Online.

I think he meant that it "fizzled" in the eyes of many hardcore MMO fans - which it did. It appealed to a crowd that didn't like conventional MMOs, which is cool, but Guild Wars 2 looks like it's going to appeal to everyone, not just people who like bite-sized adventures - which I am actually interested in.

You can tell a lot from videos and GW2 has had more coverage than your average MMO. There's lots of gameplay videos out there already.

It looks like a lot of fun and this is coming from a guy who's been playing MMO's since 1997. I've been burned MANY times by prospective MMO's enough that I've developed a radar for would-be flops.

GW2 WILL BE the shit. TOR is going to be left as a burning husk after GW2 releases.

@Magnalon
Well, I wasn't debating whether or not it's an MMO, and neither was BoomingEchoes.

Wtf are you talking about? GW1 is still more active than most MMOs not named WoW or TOR.

TOR was enough to fully replace WoW for me, but Im still pretty sick of that style of MMO.

Really lookin forward to GW2, need more RPGs that are more about gameplay and skill instead of character stats and gear.

I am fully aware how much some people think that stats and gear basically are the core of RPGs, Im not arguing it. They call GW2 and RPG, so Ill call it an RPG.

I've been waiting for GW2 for years, I'm happy it's finally coming out.

I hope they bring back the Ritualist and Dervish class. I have to get more achievements for my character lol.

I love WoW.
So far, I love ToR (even though it seems to be the cool thing to hate it now).
I loved Lord of the Rings Online while I played it (about 4-5 months)
I even loved Warhammer for the 1-2 months that I played it.

I HATED Guild Wars. I have never understood the love behind it. But I will watch the coverage since new MMOs always interest me.

I always had a soft spot for the first guild wars, wow was great but the environments never really impressed me in the way guild wars' did, that and PvP in guild wars > wow PvP by far! (this is a fact)

As for guild wars 2, someone call me a doctor I've had a boner for this game for so damn long it hurts, just glad it's in its final dev stretch to release now!

I want this so bad.

I've been jizzing up a storm over this.

Annoyingly, I just amde the move from Windows to Mac, so of course that means no GW2 for me. Unless... ohh, unless I buy another computer solely for playing GW2 Would that be too sad? Would that make me one of 'those' people?

I liked Guild Wars though I'm not an active player now, PvP was where it was at and the limited number of spells and abilities you could bring with you made for some interesting gameplay.

@AceFlibble You can also get yourself a copy of Windows and install it on your Mac with Bootcamp. This way, you will avoid spending a lot of money for one game and becoming one of 'those' people :P
