Guerrilla steps back from Killzone 2 as new maps launch photo

With Killzone 2's third DLC map pack, Napalm & Cordite, heading to the PSN today, Guerrilla Games producer Seb Downie has revealed that his team plans to back away from the game, claiming his they need some time to "reflect." Fully understandable, considering this must have been the studio's biggest focus for the past five or six years, and they've still been supporting it since launch. I'd be sick of the game as well.

"Right now we’re going to take a step back from Killzone 2," Downie explains. "We’ve been working non-stop since the disc version was released on patches, DLC and http://www.killzone.com updates, so need some time to reflect on what is actually out there."

We don't know how long this break will be, and whether or not this means that Killzone 2 will no longer be getting any DLC, but if it means these guys can get to work on a new game, I won't begrudge them a well-earned rest. Still, I was hoping that KZ2 would get more than just a few new maps, so that's a shame.

Either way, I'll be checking out Napalm & Cordite at some point today. Remember, Sony's offering a "buy two, get one free" deal -- download all three map packs, and pay $11.99. Not too shabby a deal for those yet to purchase the prior maps.

They've given this game non-stop support since launch, I can see why they would want a break, they have earned their rest in my opinion.

That's cool. I think they've done enough for a while. The support was really good, they've kept listening to the community. I know how passionate they are about game development so I think they can't sit on their asses for too long.

They can take a breather, they've earned it. They have constantly supported the game since launch and their rest is well deserved. Also if you don't own the other map packs this is a pretty sweet deal. I remember in Modern Warfare getting 3 maps for $10, with this deal you get 6 for $12, not to shabby, and the new maps are pretty good as well. I can't wait to get my hands on that bolt gun.

Buy two get one free! :( son of a bitch! I bought the first map pack. Anyways, that developer needs a break. Hopefully in time well get new game modes or other kool content for KZ2 down the road.

I already bought the first two map packs. Damn, should've waited. Guerilla definitely needs a rest. Just a shame I can never find anyone on the new maps though aside from one or two servers, with a small amount of people. They're very good maps and one of the few map packs I actually like.

Yeah, I'm amazed at how much this game has evolved in the 6 or so months it's been out. I hadn't even tried the last map pack (which I bought day 1) when I heard about this one. Good for Guerrilla, they deserve some rest.

Then they can get to work on the 2nd game they make with this game's engine.

I'm glad I've staved off buying DLC up to now, I'll definitely be getting the more justifiable six for £10 deal! Cant argue with that.

They've put a really entertaining game out there, and the first one I've actually bothered getting into the online side of things. Gurellia can take a leave for however long they like; I'm sure people will be enjoying Killzone for a good while to come!

they need to release a patch to increase the FOV in this game, like how the bioshock developers did.

And sort of bullshit for those of use who did purchase the other two map packs already. Oh well.

I think what they meant to say is that we need to take a step back & check what our competitors are up to these days. Which they should've done before they started with development xD (I own KZ1+2, no hate :P)

@Moreno They only released a FOV patch for the PC version of Bioshock since the widescreen support on PC was a hackjob that cut-off a chunk of the res. The patch did not effect anything on the console so your point is moot.

@Minamu Killzone 2 is the best shooter we have seen on consoles this generation and they certainly did their homework. The online is the most solid online I have yet to see in a console title besides Call of Duty 4. The singleplayer wasn't the worlds greatest but it was easily on par with Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 in that department. Give them more credit for making an awesome game.

Yea, they've earned it and it probably isn't profitable, but I would love for them to keep supporting it.
This is a great game that will get a lot of respect when people look back 10 years from now.

Jim,

What is your favorite class/badge combos and why?

Personally, I'm addicted to saboteur + assault badge or tactician + assault badge when trying to actually be a good team player. If it's a tiny map, I'll switch out the assault for the engineer badge.

I'm all about a Tactician with Repair. It's not a combo you see often, but I feel it strikes a great balance between personal gain (ie, points for repairs) and team play (spawn grenades, which are an otherwise thankless task).

Plus tacticians have Alien heads, which rocks.

I love the sloped-back headed tacticians, it was such a good design choice. You're right - it's very thankless, it's not like they get points for laying down spawns and tacticians are the first to get the blame if their team loses a match.

Many players still haven't figured out that you have to stand backwards when you toss your grenade if you want folks to spawn in the correct direction (or, more likely, they just don't care.) It can get maddening, especially since there's no spawn invulnerability anymore and players still insist on dropping spawn grenades right on top of the mission objective (something that I am extremely guilty of)

Your tactician + repair is the perfect solution for a small or medium sized map, such as Tharsis or Radec - you do some serious damage on those maps, I'm betting. Also, that sounds like a winning combination for Visari - those four analogous gun emplacements turn that whole map into Killzone Duckhunt.
