Guerrilla Games 'are investigating' Killzone 2 controls photo

I’ve been playing Guerrilla Games’s Killzone 2 for over ten hours, and I still can’t rip off a Helghast head without having to resort to strafing. I can’t pinpoint my control-related issue, but I know that others are feeling my pain. Yesterday, we ran a story related to this subject. Guerilla’s producer, Seb Downie, seemed adamant when he said that no changes would happen with the current control method: “[Guerrilla Games] have come to the conclusion that there are no changes required to the [control] system.”

Today, he sang a different tune -- in bullet point format, no less -- in a post on the official PlayStation forums. He wrote (the stress is his) that Guerrilla is still analyzing the control method. If they find a problem, they’ll fix it:

Okay, before I start crying.

 1. We have not decided if we are going to do anything to the controls.  We are investigating.

2. If we change them, we have not said how.  No reason to get upset.  We are not going to turn them on their head.  It would not be sweeping changes.

3. Any potential changes made will be carefully analyzed and tested to ensure they do not negatively affect players who do not experience any issues.
Are many of you experiencing issues? I’ve been told on numerous occassions that it takes time to get used to. Time happened, and I'm still a sad panda.

I don't get why GG can't just admit they made a shitty decision with the controls. I'm not saying I'm an expert video game marksman, but it is kind of embarrassing when I can't shoot someone when I'm directly behind them with a LMG.

It's getting REALLY HARD to kill Heavy's because the aiming is weird shit.

REALLY FUCKING HARD.

Heavy's are still more annoying in TF2 though. Fucking KGB motherfuckers...

was playing it on the dtoid server not a minute ago..... my ass was destroyed, and the controls are fine on the basis that EVERYONE has to work with them. I would not have designed them with the delay that they have, though.

Also I had fun.

I actually like the controls, (still don't have it :( only the demo) but they're pretty damn good but as i said, to each his own, as long as they don't force new controls on everyone we're cool

If they stay the same, fine, I'm ok with that. If they can give them a little more "tightening up," in multiplayer especially, then I'm down for that as well. I agree they shouldn't be drastically changed, but just a little tightening up and less of a loose feeling is a welcome change in my book.

This seems to happen with every shooter. Can you imagine if street fighter had locked controls? Just open them up to customization and make everyone happy, how much could that cost?

I have to say that at the beginning I had issues, after 30 hours of game play over the weekend. Yes, it was awesome, thank you. I become top 1% and no longer have issues with the controls. However does this in anyway negate the need for controller adjustment probably not. Not everyone can be a gaming freak like me. I have no problem taking on five people at a time sometimes. I took down five guys with my single clip bursting from one to the next, dodging and juking like a pro football player. Even got the "invisible" sniper, which I had to take down with my pistol. To say it was sweet is an understatement.

It's an easy fix:

Have a COD4 or Halo 3 style preset controls AND/OR Let players remap the buttons.

PC players have been remapping for YEARS!

I honestly think people have blown this out of proportion just to have something to talk about. Even when the majority of the knee jerkers who swore the game was shit have gotten used the controls and realized that's how the game is supposed to be played and you just have to acclimate, the media will continue to talk about it I guess.

The reviews are out, however, and they are all really good. Everyone is saying that it's weird at first but you get used to it. Even the people who were cursing it their first day.

I guess I'm just worried that people will pass on a great experience because the media wants to have something to talk about. I'm sure eventually people will get the truth, but think of all that lost time they could have been leveling up their character. Sad sad.

Didn't you "whinning guys" played Megaman 1 (NES)? control was really horible there, and yet, most of us managed to finish the game. What's the big deal in a freaking 0.15 seconds delay? You better invest your time in mastering the control instead of losing it posting your "killzone sux" messages in every forum.

I think a lot of people have a lot of different issues with the game. For instance SnakeDude4Life says its a button mapping issue, however you have Alternative 2 that is almost exactly like COD4. I think this "delay" is actually meant as the deadzone. The speed at which the turn increases with the degree at which the stick is pressed.

This very well might be an issue and this IS the issue they are checking into, nothing else.

Seriously, if they add in any sort of auto aim or sticky aim it will ruin KZ2 online. I like the fact that it's hard, it's the reason why it's so deep multiplayer wise.

They better not change it.

Volomon: I don't care what it is, I just know that aiming at a Heavy that is walking slower than molasses running down a hill in the winter time in Alaska, should not be this hard.

It is, and it's really starting to piss me off. I can't get used to it, because it's not right.

That, and I want crouch to be X-Button. If they allow me to map that, I'll shut up about the aiming, as at least my middle finger won't have to try listen to my brain.

The controls felt alittle off to me when i first started playing but after a few hours they feel pretty second nature to me. I don't often go for headshots though dead is dead afterall (assuming there isn't a medic creeping around). As for all you people who can't seem to kill because of the controls its probably just that you suck as i have no problem getting kills and normally finish in the top 3.

Also if button mapping is your issue most FPS don't offer complete customization even COD4 was limited in how it let you customize its controls so STFU. On that note alternate 2 is almost identical to the COD4 setup except for the crouch. I'll admit i wish it were identical but its a fairly minor issue. Now why they wouldn't make alternate 2 the default setup given its popularity in other games is beyond me.

I was having trouble headshotting, but I just chalked it up to the fact that this was a console FPS. I was berating my screen last night, demanding to know why anyone ever thought it was a good idea to put out an FPS on anything other than a PC. I think the controls for it are as good any any other console FPS I've ever played.

Well as I said in my blog I dont have much of a problem with the controls, but I do feel that the current setup takes away from the experience just a little.

Id like the delay in controls to be lessened if not removed cuz that was honestly the only really obvious dumb decision they made. Custom button mapping should be doable, you dont hear anyone complain about Resistance 2's controls do you? And I wish the sensitivity scale was a little more precise.

lol, I see what they were trying to do, but Jesus did they fuck it up. I'd really have to play the game to see exactly how bad it is, but even from a video on youtube of a guy showing how the delay works, it's pretty obvious that it's not a good thing. It doesn't seem like they really even accomplished what they were trying to do, which is add a realistic weighty feel to the guns. You don't do that by putting in a 1/5 second of lag for every movement of the stick. There should be absolutely no lag at all. Instead, the acceleration of the gun should be slow at first, but still existent.

This video is a really good analysis of it, frame by frame:

There is nothing wrong with the controls. I've put about 15-20 hours into MP already and if the recoil is a drag for you, turn down the sensistivity on the Y and X by 1 or 2 notches, adn choose Alt 2 for the buttons, it's just like CoD4. The game is awesome.

wait ,is it the button layout thats the problem? i hear its slugish, which i assume means turns slow. which i could see as a problem. but what they need is an acceleration option.

i that the only control issue is that it turns slow?
in this day an age why cant we have every control scheme be customizable?

@The Reborn: If you're sick of all the "bitching" then why do you come into every thread about Killzone and make comments insinuating that people who find fault with the game are unskilled or worse? Did you have any personal involvement in the creation of the game or its control scheme? Are you one of these people who emotionally need Killzone to succeed because you're a PS3 fanboy? Or do you just like being a pompous douche?

Meng.

I love how people use these threads as an opportunity to say how large their console FPS cock is. I personally have no interest in another vanilla shooter. TF2 updates keep my busy. If a large enough percentage of the players have an issue with the dead zone on the look stick, then it probably could use a little tightening. That, however, is the developers discretion. if they think it's fine, deal with it. IF they're making a change, hooray for you.

@Chronic - just because you need a mouse doesn't mean everyone does. You suck.

the controls are different but with a little practice you can mow down 47 people a match ( well at least I can). Just predict you opponents movements and lead slightly ahead of the predicted path. I do admit you have to lose the COD4 mindset but if you can do that the rest just falls in place.

whats with all the whining about the controls.gamers can be the biggest cry babies if a game is different that what their used to.if you read most of the complaints they always say i wish it was like COD4,they want every game contol scheme to be exactly the same and if it's different in the slightest way they bitch and moan.
i'm playing Killzone 2 right now and the controls are fine, yes they take a few minute to get used to but if you never played the game and listened to some of the complainers you'd think that aiming at someone was nearly impossible..
every game plays different so get used to it,shut up and learn how to play.

I do concur, the day I picked up the controller the controls did seem a tad sluggish, and it made me feel like i was buzzed in a video game... head heavy trying to look all around slowly. adjusting sensitivity didnt work either.

Just because people playing the game have legit concerns about controls doesnt make them newbs, especially if it is more than a small ranting few. Just because you claim to "mow down 47 people a match" doesnt make your real life peen any bigger, it just shows you have to argue every little stupid concern. Oh no they are going to address a control issue in the game, its going to break the game for me oh NOES!1....

The dev team claimed to be looking into it, nothing more. I guess we're stuck with whatever controls they gave us for now. If you like them, fine... keep your "superiority" to yourselves. I'll stick with my PC for now.

The button arrangements don't bug me (I use Alt 2, which is pretty close to COD4).

The only thing I take issue with is the minor delay in aiming. If every shooter had that, I wouldn't care. The fact that I feel like I should have already moved when I pressed the stick is uncomfortable. I've uppsed the turn speed to compensate, but I'd rather have an aiming system that moves when I move, not a second later.
I love the game, but still- it's enough to get annoying.

It's the input delay that kills me. I have no beef with the button mapping at all.

It's the fact that I can have my analog pressed all the way to the right/left and hold it there for a half second before anything registers on screen.

Plus, to top that off after you let go of the stick your guy continues to keep turning for that 1/3 of second so you totally blow past what you were aiming for.

If EVERY FPS had these controls it would be fine, but seeing as how Killzone2 is the ONLY one that had this, it's pretty hard to adapt. EXAMPLE: Try this new car out, after you turn the wheel it steers 1/2 second later and when you stop steering it continues to steer!

Yo dawg I herd you like 1/2 delay's so we put a 1/2 delay before the delay and a 1/2 delay after the delay so you can 1/2 delay before you 1/2 second delay!

Come on! do you know how long half second is? I hear people talking about delay, but i see no delay, only the unusual acceleration/deceleration.
You most likely blow past what you aim for because you move the stick all the way in the first place, and you do so because it accelerates slowly if you only press it halfway. Then the stick will have to go back to neutral from all the way on one side, and that's when you keep turning.
Oh, and I keep seeing those videos around, but 4 frame lag is normal, all 30 frmae per second game has them. Gamasutra measured them and Halo3 and GTAIV have even more.

I just got the game today and played single player for like 3 hours. The controls did annoy me a bit at first but I have adjusted to them now. However, the input lag, like when u move ur stick it takes a little time to move ur view, is kind of annoying.Like killzone 1 had the same type of inaccurate shooting, which was fine, but there was no lag from when u moved ur stick until when you move your view.I have adjusted to it tho, so am not sure really if I want guerilla to make any changes. I actually think that if they do make changes they should make it universal and only allow the new way of controlling it.

@Gufo

Maybe not a 1/2 second but there is a delay as I can reach the far right/left before ANYTHING happens on screen. There is no acceleration involved in my issue as nothing is moving at the time.

This happens in no other FPS that I have played, and I have a shit ton of games as my character will actually begin to move BEFORE I have reached the far right/left with my analog stick.
