Guerrilla: Don't call Killzone 2 a 'Halo Killer' photo

When the original Killzone was announced and the hype was growing to ridiculous levels, one specific term seemed to regularly pop up in the gaming press -- "Halo Killer." Since then, the franchise has been unable to shake the image of being Sony's answer to Microsoft's premier series, and that's not an image developer Guerrilla Games has been keen to propogate.

"We generally don't mind [comparisons], as I can think of worse franchises to be compared to than [Halo or Call of Duty]," explains GG managing director Herman Hulst in the latest Game Informer. "What I don't like is being labeled as the "killer" of franchise X.

"We've set up Killzone as a universe and an experience in its own right, without wanting to benchmark it against any one particular game. We're, obviously, gamers ourselves and we play anything from World of Warcraft to LittleBigPlanet to MotorStorn or Guitar Hero, but there isn't one title that has been the biggest influence."

It's kind of a shame that developers themselves become victims of the marketing hype and fanboy arguments, as I'm sure they themselves just want to make a good game and don't really care about console wars. It is indeed tragic, but Killzone 2 is obviously a Halo Killer as it is the best FPS ever made and anyone who disagrees is a spastic.

I sure do love me some Killzone multiplayer. Jim, you still haven't accepted my friend request, and I die a little bit inside with each passing day.

I've been playing Killzone 2 lately, and I've gotta call bullshit.

It definitely feels like Guitar Hero.

@The Prodigal Son

I have to agree. They overcharted it way too much though.

LMFAO, yet another reason why Jim Sterling and Destructoid kick ass in astronomical proportions.

I've beaten Killzone2 twice now, and I still find the aiming to be pretty wonky. I wish that was better.

Halo Killer? Maybe... But Call of Duty killer? Hahaha...fat chance.

@Detox
You're just jealous that Microsoft is making millions thanks to their cash cow of a franchise that is Halo.

Ahh this again. I remember reading an interview with one of the head members of GG back before killzone was released. They got asked, so why have you labelled this game a halo killer? He responded by we haven't. A dutch news outlet had coined that term and somehow everyone jumped on the bandwagon (and believe me it was a large band wagon). The amazing thing is there essentially two very different games (at least the first game was from halo) halo was fast and killzone was more considered, halo was bright killzone was grey. We shouldn't compare games because they are the same genre, we should analyse them for their own merits.

Good of the developer to say that. I feel that a lot of developers are like that including Bungie. They aren't out to destroy another franchise, they just want to make an awesome gaming experience for their customers. I didn't hear anyone back then screaming Halo was the Half-Life killer back then. I love Half-Life overall and I'm somewhat of a PC person. However, I enjoyed playing 007, Halo, and Killzone as well. It makes me feel pretty good to see the FPS scene really take off in the console area. Many of us awhile back didn't think it would happen so soon or as well.

To The Halos, the day Killzone 2 came out was the most devastating day of its life, but to Killzone 2 it was just a Tuesday.

primary method of killing in killzone = bullets.
primary method of killing in halo = your fist, giant hammer, beam sword.

as far as i can see they are nothing alike :P
