Guardian: PS3 is a 'disappointment for gamers' photo

The Guardian has put the big four gaming platforms through their paces, giving helpful tips to the British consumer who is looking for some electronic entertainment this Christmas. The game weighs the relative pros and cons of each gaming system, and while it seems to find good and bad points about the Wii, Xbox 360 and PC, the paper has nothing but damning words for Sony's "disappointing" Black Box o' Blu-ray.

Of the Wii, the Guardian states that it's a "perfect introduction to videogames" but that the graphics "aren't as pretty" as other systems and that groundbreaking Wii games only come along infrequently. The Xbox 360 allegedly has the "best games portfolio" and the only bad point is the "useless" Arcade model. When talking about the PC and Mac, the paper only focuses on the obvious 3D graphics card requirement and states that most publishers ignore the Mac.

The real star of the show is the Guardian's assessment of the PlayStation 3: "Whereas the PlayStation 2 once dominated its rivals, the PS3 is a disappointment for gamers. Former PlayStation exclusives such as Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto are now available for rival consoles from the day of release and, at £250, PS3 is still too pricey. An attractive purchase only for those with an obsession with the PlayStation brand."

Ouch. Pretty brutal summary, especially in a year that saw quite a few hot PS3 exclusives. What do you think? Is the PS3 truly something that only "obsessive" PlayStation fans need, or is the paper being unfairly harsh? Let your opinion be known!

I find their criticisms of every platform rather ignorant.

It may have been an disappointment in the beginning of its life cycle. But with all the exclusives that has come and is about to come out, I think that branding couldnt be further away from the truth.

They seem to have confused 'PS3' with 'Wii'.

This seems to be an out of touch media outlet catching up to what some people were saying over a year ago.

Luckily for PS3 owners though, this year saw a hefty price drop and a TON of awesome software so those outcries of "disappointment" have been quelled for the near future.

I'd like to move in to The Guardian's offices when the apocalypse comes, because they seem to be living two years in the past.

It might be brutal, but its honest. The Arcade is useless, PCs do need mid-range or better graphic card, Wii does have the "worst" graphics, and PS3 does cost alot. Last time I went to Gamestop, MGS4 was the only exclusive I wanted for the PS3. I still think the PS3 needs its "must have" game. Even the R&C games are meh, and I am a huge Insomniac fan)

I don't own a 360, but the Wii is more disappointing than my non-existent Microsoft console. Both of my PS3s get used daily, and neither have let me down when it comes to gaming.

Maybe in the UK it doesn't stack up as well as in Canada or the US, but here, the 360 is not as good a deal compared the PS3 no matter how you slice it - unless you need Halo.

I, for one, am glad Xbox owners get to play Tomb Raider and GTA games and others. I am glad I got to play BioShock, Eternal Sonata, and others. Great games should be enjoyed by all.

This doesn't make PS3 a disappointment. Guardian is on crack.

I'd say the PS3 has been the least disappointing this gen. The Wii has all the shovelware and the 360 has the hardware reliability issues. The PS3's biggest issue is its half-assed network support (which they're slowly taking care of).

The article references Tomb raider as not being an exclusive anymore to sony? Since when has that franchise been relevant after the PS1?

How do they define "gamers"? People who play every games in their favorite genres with disposable income? Or do they mean the "mainstream" audience? Gamers aren't the reason why Wii still outsells 360 & PS3 to this day. Also they suggest buying the £200 Xbox vs the £250 PS3 as too pricey? Bluray, I think, makes up £50 difference in price. Unless you already have a preference of which system to get based on the exclusives. <sarcasm> Then you're a fanboi. </sarcasm>

That was way too harsh on the PS3. And I love my 360, but I could definitely come up with a few more cons besides the Arcade unit being useless. I don't think the Arcade comment is even accurate, because if you're not going to be doing much/any online stuff, then it's exactly what a person would need.

I thought the same thing about them bringing up GTA. Most of the GTA games have ended up on other consoles at some point, such as GTA2 on Dreamcast and Grand Theft Auto Trilogy on the original Xbox.

I think that they wrote this incorrectly... the PS3 might be a disappointment for CONSUMERS... people that haven't bought a PS3, but I think that for gamers who own a PS3 there are very few disappointed with their purchase.

In fact, I've not seen a study on this, but in terms of console owner satisfaction, I would bet that the PS3 probably rates highest of the big 3. Primarily because the price ensures that gamers know what they are buying and weight their decision a bit more carefully.

I do think that journalists should weigh their words more carefully. I would like to see them back up their claim that "the PS3 is a disappointment for gamers". It can only be a disappointment if they own and have played the console... otherwise they are simply referring to the PS3 "pricing" being a disappointment.

Sony always seems to start out slow with their game libraries for all their consoles. It usually takes them 2-3 years get an amazing game. This fall has been very good for the PS3. March 2010 is going to be a killer month for Sony.

I like the PS3 for its exclusive games, such as Uncharted and Infamous, and I like the blu-ray player for my HD tv. I had an xbox, got the RROD, and I will never go back, but that's just me.

I'd disagree, i think at this moment the PS3 is a pretty good option for gamers. I got mine last saturday and i'm loving it, playing an incredible exclusive game like Uncharted 2 and some other good games like MW2 and Little Big Planet. Also the price difference between the PS3, Xbox and Wii, isn't that big here.

It was not harsh, it was stupid and ignorant. Tomb Raider has appeared on PC, Mac, PS1/2/3, Xbox/360, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Wii, PSP, DS, hell there were even N-Gage and Pocket PC versions. Similarly GTA games were released on about half a dozen different platforms.

I still don't have a PS3. Just doesn't seem worth it since I don't care about blue ray and 360 has most of the games I want.

the ps3 is boring crap. i bought one recently and sold it soon afterwards. they are totally right by saying it is only for the ps obsessed. that's the only conclusion i reach when i wonder why so many people love the system. brought up on it and can't see past it. like a pack of cigs, once you start with a brand that is your only brand. i'll stick with the 360.

You know, I bought the $300 bundle on Black Friday, and I'd say it was a very fair price. I've already gotten quite a bit of fun out of it, and I currently only have 3 games, all of which I've beaten (or come close to)

I'd say this was overly harsh, yeah.

Feature for Feature, the PS3 is probably the best all around media box this generation, especially since the price drop and the addition of Netflix streaming. I still use my 360 as my primary system, but the PS3 is nice for BluRays. Plus, there are enough exclusives for the PS3 to justify the purchase. MGS4, Infamous, both Uncharted games, and Little Big Planet are all excellent, just to name the ones I care about. If you're only going to buy one system this gen, it comes down to exclusives you care about since most of the big games are on both systems.

This reminds me of an observation made by Alex Lindsay from the This Week in Media podcast. He said whenever the mainstream media covers something you're knowledgeable, you can call them out on how often they get stuff wrong or don't know what they're talking about. Yet when they move on to something you're unfamiliar with, you assume they're authoritative and well-researched. It's kind of scary. If you really care about... anything, it's often better to look into the niche blogs/magazines.

2 years ago I would've agreed with this, but this year was dominated by the PS3, and 300 dollars is pretty cheap, considering the 360 launched at $400 and doesn't come with Blu Ray capabilities. Sounds like whoever wrote this just copied an article from 2 years ago. I bought a PS3 on black friday, and am very happy with it.

I think it's a dissapointment solely because it tries to force a different architecture onto game making despite its lack of dominance.

Also I hate jaggies and the games on PS3 hardly ever have any kind of AA.

Otherwise though I am sure it is a fine machine.

Cause Uncharted 2, the new Ratchet and Clank, inFamous and Killzone 2 were all disappointments. As a gamer, this paper says I should be disappointed. Well, I guess I'm trading my PS3, which I have had since launch, in, because they're right, I can get GTA on my 360. They should fire this writer.

Just beause a system sold like bananas does not mean it's being used. I will however, be playing the crap out of it after Xmas as I know I am getting Resident Evil Chronicals and A Boy and His Blob ;)
