The Guardian has put the big four gaming platforms through their paces, giving helpful tips to the British consumer who is looking for some electronic entertainment this Christmas. The game weighs the relative pros and cons of each gaming system, and while it seems to find good and bad points about the Wii, Xbox 360 and PC, the paper has nothing but damning words for Sony's "disappointing" Black Box o' Blu-ray.
Of the Wii, the Guardian states that it's a "perfect introduction to videogames" but that the graphics "aren't as pretty" as other systems and that groundbreaking Wii games only come along infrequently. The Xbox 360 allegedly has the "best games portfolio" and the only bad point is the "useless" Arcade model. When talking about the PC and Mac, the paper only focuses on the obvious 3D graphics card requirement and states that most publishers ignore the Mac.
The real star of the show is the Guardian's assessment of the PlayStation 3: "Whereas the PlayStation 2 once dominated its rivals, the PS3 is a disappointment for gamers. Former PlayStation exclusives such as Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto are now available for rival consoles from the day of release and, at £250, PS3 is still too pricey. An attractive purchase only for those with an obsession with the PlayStation brand."
Ouch. Pretty brutal summary, especially in a year that saw quite a few hot PS3 exclusives. What do you think? Is the PS3 truly something that only "obsessive" PlayStation fans need, or is the paper being unfairly harsh? Let your opinion be known!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Luckily for PS3 owners though, this year saw a hefty price drop and a TON of awesome software so those outcries of "disappointment" have been quelled for the near future.
Maybe in the UK it doesn't stack up as well as in Canada or the US, but here, the 360 is not as good a deal compared the PS3 no matter how you slice it - unless you need Halo.
I, for one, am glad Xbox owners get to play Tomb Raider and GTA games and others. I am glad I got to play BioShock, Eternal Sonata, and others. Great games should be enjoyed by all.
This doesn't make PS3 a disappointment. Guardian is on crack.
I thought the same thing about them bringing up GTA. Most of the GTA games have ended up on other consoles at some point, such as GTA2 on Dreamcast and Grand Theft Auto Trilogy on the original Xbox.
The last few Tomb Raider games have been very good. I see your point, but I still thought that I would throw that out there.
In fact, I've not seen a study on this, but in terms of console owner satisfaction, I would bet that the PS3 probably rates highest of the big 3. Primarily because the price ensures that gamers know what they are buying and weight their decision a bit more carefully.
I do think that journalists should weigh their words more carefully. I would like to see them back up their claim that "the PS3 is a disappointment for gamers". It can only be a disappointment if they own and have played the console... otherwise they are simply referring to the PS3 "pricing" being a disappointment.
Well fuck, I'm going to go throw myself off a bridge now, I didn't know I was so horribly depressed...

...I have a headache this big... and it's called Guardian.
Really? A painted up fanboy accusation at anyone enjoying the console, and you want to keep your credibility? I'll just go right ahead and try to delete this shit from memory.
I'd say this was overly harsh, yeah.
This reminds me of an observation made by Alex Lindsay from the This Week in Media podcast. He said whenever the mainstream media covers something you're knowledgeable, you can call them out on how often they get stuff wrong or don't know what they're talking about. Yet when they move on to something you're unfamiliar with, you assume they're authoritative and well-researched. It's kind of scary. If you really care about... anything, it's often better to look into the niche blogs/magazines.
Also I hate jaggies and the games on PS3 hardly ever have any kind of AA.
Otherwise though I am sure it is a fine machine.
You shouldn't need a newspaper to validate your purchases for you, least of all The Guardian.

Just beause a system sold like bananas does not mean it's being used. I will however, be playing the crap out of it after Xmas as I know I am getting Resident Evil Chronicals and A Boy and His Blob ;)
