GTFO: GameStop director dumps 2.3 million shares photo

Is something going down in GameStop land? Is it time to GTFO? It seems like GameStop director Leonard Riggio felt that way, as he just sold 2.3 million shares of GameStop stock. That's some $60 million in his pocket now, lowering his stake in the games retailer to 5.5 percent from 6.9 percent.

So maybe he just needed the money? I don't know. I looks like he's onto something. Gamasutra reports that the last time Riggio sold big, he managed to avoid a 62 percent loss. So it looks like he knows something. Analysts say that it looks like he thinks that stock won't be performing as well as hoped.

Are our digital downloads chipping away at the retailer? Does Riggio know something that we don't?

maybe people are finally becoming smart, and not going to gamestop to buy used games.

But more than likely, The dude is going to invest in something else, or buy something... a new house, some cars, etc. plus christmas is coming up, maybe he's going all out this year.

Other stores are getting into the used game business, and the writing is on the wall in terms consoles, hand helds, and digital distribution in the long term. Smart move to sell some while the price is still good.

Well, if you want something to fuel your tin foil hats, Way of the Samurai 3 has been the first game I've ever known to not be pre-orderable in GameStop's instore database. Like, at all.

Alright, probably means nothing. But its strange behavior at the Gamestop, for sure

upon hearing this news several other stock holders dumped stock and thus proved that GameStop stock would drop.

Isn't that insider trading?

i hope this means the end is soon for gamestop. that store, and everyone who works and shops there, can blow me.

I am really resisting making a joke about how everything he will spend this money on is used. eg. used condoms, used heroin needles, used hookers, used underwear, used parachutes, used soap, used water, used dog crap bags, more used hookers, and so on and so forth....i guess i didnt resist very hard.

I'd bet he's familiar with the 2009 holiday sales projections. They're probably disappointing (we're still technically in a recession, after all). While I'm sure gamestop does their own analysis, it would be hard (and likely wrong) to pin insider trading on him because it is fairly common wisdom that "consumers are spending less these days"

$5 difference in "savings" between a new and used game and the used game case looks like it was pulled out of a used diaper.

it doesn't matter. as long as he fills in the proper form with the government, he can trade his stock with all the insider info he can get.

Why the hell does that gamestop have an N64 and oldschool Playstation logo up there by the sign, but PSP and Xbox 360 posters in the window? I was thinking it was maybe a 10 year old picture until I saw the posters in the window.

Let the damn company die already, they barely give you any money back for unopened new games. I'm suprised the SEC hasn't looked into this. Someone just kill this undead horse.

Hmm this is going to suck for me and plenty others if stores start closing. But then again it's probably due to a terribad Christmas season, with there being so few good games that people are going to want to get, that and no new consoles to really buy after the late summer / fall price drops.

It's the scourge of the giant music game boxes eating up too much retail floorspace with very little (comparitive) profit per cubic foot - It's killin' em.

Um, if he did that because he knows something specific about Gamestop's future, then that's really illegal. As in, "insider trading and its a federal crime" illegal. Assuming he isn't a crooked jackass, the only bad news that could be derived from this is that he sees something ahead that's bad for the game retail business as a whole. My guess is that he foresees weak holiday sales, which are already a foregone conclusion to those watching the industry, as causing a major stock plunge for all video game companies and retailers.

$60 million is good to have in this economy- maybe he is looking to buy up something like real estate that is a cheap investment if you have the $.

My goodness, are all of you destructoid people blind! Haven't any of you noticed how less and less shit is on the shelves now? Prices for everything are goig up it seems. More people losing jobs. Its a frickin economic collapse I tell you! How many of you really can afford the games you play and for how long? Mr. Gamestop director obviously is aware of the this and has sold his shares becuase he knows the shit is going to hit the fan, already has. How many retail stores have gone belly up in the last year alone?

@bobyoko: Again with the sandy vagina. Might I recommend a salve?

I have a blast buying used games from Gamestop. A lot. It's super neat. If they shut down, that's fine. I'll just go somewhere else. I've never been big on loyalty to a brand or store, just as long as I get the thing that I want at a price I can live with.

Gamestop simply has too many stores. Their big business mentality is going to be the death of them. In the malls here, each has a Gamestop. Each also has another one directly across the street from said mall, 2 of which have yet another store a block away. All suck equally.

I gotta say, shopping at gamestop is retarded. There's no point whatsoever anymore now that amazon.com has offered us brand new games for less than retail, and with a small fee, or membership, you can have it on your door no later than it's official "release date."

So yea. FU Gamestop. (Still bitter that a store of them decided to not stock ps3 games such as Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted 6months after release, claiming they don't sell enough just so they can hock their used games.)
