GTA IV region locked on the Xbox 360 ... how lame photo

Bad news for import fans, or people who might be thinking of moving country such as yours truly. Rockstar has decided to region lock Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360. Unlike the PlayStation 3, where everything is region free, Microsoft lets the developer decide whether or not to lock the games down. Western developers usually don't bother, while Japanese companies can nearly always be relied upon to do it. Rockstar, despite being based in the West, has decided to pull what we professionals call "something a sh*tsnake would do."

This is actually very annoying news for someone like me, who internationally travels and intends to settle in another territory in the future. While the Xbox 360 version was looking to be a worthy purchase, hearing something like this makes the PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV look far better.

A disappointment, to say the least.

Where is the logic in region locking it?? It seems to me a bit of work for ..what?

That shit is lame. Region locking should be extinct already.

Region-locking sucks, big time. But I've come to expect it from Xbox 360 games.

I'm thinking it has to do with how the games are rated differently in each region? Or even to prevent those in Australia from being able to purchase a non-cut version. I'm sure there's some legal liability involved. It really sucks though :(

While we're on the subject of shitty things Rockstar has done, have they managed to patch Bully 360 fully yet? Haven't heard a peep about the game since the first patch which created tons of new crashes. I'd really like to buy that one, but I'm not paying money until its fully functional.

I bet they did it because of the controversy the game has caused in regions such as Australia. They want to quell any (albeit stupid and unwarranted) problems with regions that decided to censor it and would likely have high import rates because of it.

I thought it was Microsoft's choice whether their games were region-locked or not.

That's a shame - at least they are doing a worldwide release (sans japan) though.

PS3 does look better as we all know already. :) I think its Rockstars way of putting a shiv in MS's back lol. I'm very glad to see they are still Sony loyal. Shit MS games or people who develop primarily for Xbox have been doing FAR FAR worse since the PS3 came out. So don't cry about a little pay back. Like I said on my debut blog its all going to come full circle.

Hmm I might be wrong but... don't Aussies have PAL things? Which means they could import an uncut version from Europe?

Crappy deal for people hoping to import it.

On a lighter note I am going to be attending the midnight sale tonight (12:01am) to buy GTA and I might pick up the LE version....not sure yet.

Pretty sure Harkonnen's right. I seem to remember UKers could import Animal Crossing from Australia in the year or so between when it was released there and in Europe. Could be wrong.

Isn't the UK and AUS the same Area for 360?

Yeah, unless Rockstar has found a way to region lock WITHIN the PAL system, locking GTA will do nothing to stop Australians getting their hands on an uncut version through imports.

I don't understand how the developer benefits from region locking.

Region locking is as dated as VHS tapes. It simply doesn't make sense. On one hand, they can space out profits for one to two months from region based releases but all in all, it just pisses off gamers that aren't in the U.S.

I feel for you Jim! I remember when I was in Ireland for a year and the new Beastie Boys came out (yes I still buy actual CDs for artists I like). I had been waiting for that album for months and then I had to find out it wouldn't be in stores there for another 3 weeks. I got a friend to shoot me one across the pond. Got there on release day in Dublin. :\

The only thing I can think is that because the dollar is so weak against the GBP and Euro And European game prices are through the friggin' roof, they don't want Europeans importing the game from America. Even with overseas shipping they'd probably save quite a bit going that route.

I'm still getting a PAL copy so I'm not to bothered.

I do think its about time they scrapped this region code crap now. Is it not more important that Rockstar get a legal sale from us, instead of a gamer resorting to downloading ripped ISOs from the net?

If you guys are ever importing a game, go over to Play Asia, where they have a guide telling you, which 360 games are region free of region specific. I use it all the time.
