GTA IV PS3 downloads MIA; MS to SCEA: NBD, R* is my BFF photo

Take Two, a company whose entire fortune was built on the backs of children strangling virtual whores, has just revealed an updated version of its release schedule for the rest of 2007 (and on into fiscal year 2008). The list is pretty bland, ordinary stuff, such as Manhunt 2 hitting in the third quarter of 2007 or BioShock hitting in the fourth quarter, but the real fun begins when you scroll down to a tidbit marked Grand Theft Auto IV - Episodic Content. This is, quite obviously, the downloadable content the developers have been promising along with their title for quite some time, and the 2008 release date for it comes as no surprise, but the fact that the listing is only for the Xbox 360, and that there is no PlayStation 3 equivalent listing anywhere on the page, is enough to make Chad Warden wet himself in anger.

Now, keep in mind, this could merely be a mistake on the part of Take Two, or Microsoft may have paid for a certain term of exclusivity with the downloadable content. On the other hand, it could be exactly what it looks like.

While it's too early to say that this is terrible news for fans of the PlayStation 3, it just so happens to be exactly the right time to say things like "this is a grim portent for fans of the PlayStation 3" or "man, that's gotta sting like a kick to the junk".

Also, the 3DO called, it wants its longevity back.

I kinda saw this coming. Live is a proven system, whilst playstation network sux ballz (or so im told). I really wanted to buy a PS3, but every day something like this rears its head and I'm left thinking about how glad i am that I bought a 360.
BS Triple, yo. This is Barely Living.

This isn't a surprise. I think I was tipped off when, back when the game was announced, they were all like: "The 360 version will have exclusive DLC." Kind of a red flag there.

I am sure I read the reason that PS3 does not have some or the same downloadable content as Xbox 360 as PS3 comes with content on the disc as a blue-ray can hold all the content compared to Xbox which uses standard DVD

@Beatleben:

GTA iv isn't going to be able to fit all on one dvd anyway, surely (a quick google just told me GTA:SA was 4gbish). Though that would be a crafty way for Sony to get round the 'exclusive DLC' arrangement.

Mind you, M$ is trying anything they can to de-fame Sony, with any bad news they can possibly pump out.

Saying exclusive DL content because it is too big to fit on disc would be a clear choice.

I wouldn't put it past their sneaky marketing folk. It's going to be awesome either way, by the time the exclusivity deal expires I might have got 25% completion and be wanting some new missions.

@lwesquire

Why would you think it'd be on multiple discs? Crackdown seems like it'd be about as big as I'd expect GTAIV to be and it fits on one DVD. Hell, Mass Effect is fitting on one DVD. People seem to forget that it doesn't take a lot to make a game fit on a DVD. There's a lot of garbage space dedicated to pre-rendered CG on many games. On GTA:SA, I think the sheer size and variety of the game accounted for the full 7-8GB of game the disc took up. That was without a doubt one of the largest "worlds" for a game. You had not only a large world map, but independent systems for a variety of actions. Skydiving, driving, Flying, biking, helicopters, boats. Mini-game driving games. A lot of stuff. Add in 3 cities worth of textures, a clothing system, "exercise", and a whole rural area. AND they threw in the small Liberty City level, that's a lot of game. But I think the full game we're getting in GTAIV will fit just fine on one DVD.

PS3 does at least get an exclusive L.A Noire, which looks pretty interesting.

Well blu-ray discs are larger than dvd's, so perhaps the ps3 version will be complete out of the box, but the Xbox owners will get the shaft, having to download content due to "the game not being able to fit on one disc". That would be pretty funny to watch.
