GTA IV producers clarify delay, explain hardships behind outlaw game development photo

The boys at Take-Two have had a rough few days. Between the recently reported delay of the latest iteration in their flagship Grand Theft Auto series, and the revelation that former chairman and CEO Ryan Brant was playing fast and loose with company stock, the stress is enough to drive a man to strangle a hooker or two.

Gamasutra brings us a bit of clarification from current Take-Two chairman Strauss "No, I was not in Die Hard" Zelnick regarding the GTAIV delay, in the hopes of explaining the company's precarious position, and why exactly the delay was necessary.

Hit the jump for delicious quotes and succulent cuts of publisher remorse.

[Muchas gracias a Justin Villaseñor]

According to Zelnick, via Gamasutra:

"As many of you know, development of a video game, is a complex and time intensive process," said Zelnick, adding that "given our commitment to set new stanrdard[sic] for 2 relatively new hardware platforms simultaneously," an October release, given the most recent build, "wasn't an acceptable path."

Zenick reiterated that Take-Two's relationship with Rockstar was "rock solid," and said that the decision was made with the developer working "very closely" with a high amount of cooperation, and that it "wasn't something that either took lightly."

He said that there would be no penalty to Rockstar, "nor should there be one. We all work together as a team, and we support our colleagues at Rockstar."

Those all seem like reasonable alibis, but shouldn't they have known about this a few months ago? I like to believe that I represent the common man, and thus have very little knowledge of the inner-workings behind video games, cellular telephones and high fructose corn syrup, but it seems a bit suspect that issues would arise two months before the release of a title with as large a budget as this one that would set it back another six months or so. Did a bug spring up causing children to bleed internally, or is there more to this story than Mr. Zelnick is telling us?

In an effort to englighten and quell fears, Mr. Zelnick seems to have inadvertently created a massive black hole of speculation, one inhabited no doubt, by many of Take-Two's own shareholders. On the upside, none of them seem like the type to throw him from a skyscraper followed by a string of dry, cool wit.

[Also, as a bit of a side note, though Gama spells his name as both "Zenick" and "Zelnick" in the quote, the man's name is "Strauss Zelnick".]

Take2 = Rockstar by the way. I like how they're keeping their embezzling on the low down by pretending their seperate. Funnay.

Ehh. Everyone who played the game at E3, which was almost nobody, said the game sucked due to the horrific amount of bugs, and they were wondering how the fuck was that thing getting released so soon.

This announcment explained all that.

They just aren't on schedule.

This would explain the massive no-show at E3 a lot more.

Also, I don't care if it's late by 6 months. I just want it done right.

Take two is now in a whole lot of monetary problems. With this delay they lost 200 million this fiscal year and with the pending doom of Manhunt 2 (and lets not forget all the lawsuits) I wouldn't be suprised if they're bankrupt but 2010.

Look at it this way, if it had come out in November, come February 2008 everyone would be complaining about a "drought" that every idiot gamer complains about every late winter/early spring.

"Did a bug spring up causing children to bleed internally, or is there more to this story than Mr. Zelnick is telling us?" Nope bugs will never delay the production of a game for 6 months. They will at best delay it for about a week (hardcore engine bugs mostly).

My guess is that in this case, it's the fact that most of the people who saw the gameplay demo at E3 found it sub-par compared to previous GTA games. They will take more time to polish the game before releasing it like Square and Blizzard do every year.

I'm not that surprised, considering nobody in the press has been able to get any time hands on with the game yet. Better it be delayed and be quality than rushed and unfinished.

This just in: GTAIV has been pushed back to next October in time for the holiday season, because everyone knows games are only allowed to be released in the months before christmas. Enjoy your delays people.

I don't get any company which shouldn't have realized Manhunt 2 for the pure poison it was. It's bad enough Rockstar should make it, even worse that they produced it for Take Two.

As for GTA, well I hope the six months do it some good. I would be interested in knowing the proper technical reasons for the delay.

This is kind of a relief.

There are SO GODDAMNED MANY good games coming out this fall I was having problems figuring out how I would have time to play them all.

GTAIV will be a 60+ hour monster. Now I can devote those 60 hours to Mass Effect and others.

@fetusmilk: I’m pretty sure that the most Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer said the game would be out in “Early 2008” — let’s just assume that means Q2 2008, which would put it between February 1 and April 30.

So does this mean the "perfect storm" of games that Peter Moore mentioned, is ruined? Oh NOES!!!

Damnit, I just pre-ordered the damn thing yesterday and I paid in full. It must have been my fault. WHY GOD! WHY!!!
