Rockstar's Dan Houser has confessed to Variety that he's "not sure" if Grand Theft Auto IV's DLC will be made available this year and I don't think he's the only one who has doubts. In fact, it looks like Microsoft is the only entity that believes we'll see it this year anymore.
"It’s going well. But we don’t know a date," admitted Houser after voicing his lack of certainty on the DLC releasing in 2008. "We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We’re still figuring out a few things. We’re more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good. It’s shaping up to be something we’re very proud of. That was our goal.
"We want to give people a rough idea so their expectations are roughly in line. We don’t want them to imagine it’s this enormous thing that it can never be. Doing a big digital launch is something we’ve never done before. It’s virgin territory, but at the same time, we feel very exposed because there’s no case history. No one ever came out with major DLC for a major game like this before."
It's almost safe to say by now that GTA IV is not getting downloadable content before 2009, despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary. With Grand Theft Auto IV having had its spotlight months ago, one wonders how large the excitement will be for this episodic chicanery. However, it's encouraging to see a company committed to making quality new content rather than merely shipping something that could and should have already been on the disc.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Take it to the forums.
Valve you f*ckers!
In that case, make it quicker. Just like in real life.
Also, best headline!
I got, maybe, half way through the game, so no DLC for me. Just didn't think the game was that good to begin with.
you put 25 hours into a not very good game? Jeez
Welcome to Dtoid, nice avatar.
Too much good stuff out right now to go back to (relatively) older games.
He also doesn't do them any favours by saying nobody has released major content for a major game, Shivering Isles springs to mind immediately. Was Oblivion not a major game or was the expansion not major content?
I can't help but feel that when this thing is finally unveiled those people who still have the game are going to be disappointed.
The thing that annoys me about this whole thing is that they are still spending time on this DLC and are not in full force working on GTA 5
I was guessing at the "half way" point. It certainly wasn't around 25 hours. More like 9-10. Come to think of it, not sure why I said "half", but whatevs. I tried for as long as I could to get "into" the game, but it just wasn't meant to be. Thanks for the comments btw.
Fair play... It does go on abit, I must say. 50 enjoyable hours it took me, but I can see why people would give up on it. I was just totally immersed.
Tell that to Criterion and Burnout Paradise. They have added major functionality to the game 3 or 4 times now... and didn't charge a penny for it.
yes, and Burnout paradise is great to revist because of all the downloadable content...FOR FREE
