GTA: Chinatown Wars heading to PSPgo photo
  share: Twitter Facebook Reddit Digg
filed under: #top stories

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars became notorious on the DS, not for being a controversial videogame in its own right, but for perpetuating the idea that an M-rated game can't sell on Nintendo's handheld system. The game didn't exactly have a strong debut, but perhaps Rockstar will have better luck when the game comes to the PlayStation Portable.

The previous DS exclusive will be a downloadable PSPgo title. There is no talk on a release date, price, or how the touch-screen stuff will be dealt with, but new missions have been confirmed. It's also unclear how the touch-screen elements will work, if at all. Still, it'll be interesting to see how Chinatown Wars fares on the PSP when compared to its DS release.

New York, NY - June 22, 2009 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is pleased to announce that one of the highest-rated handheld games of all time, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, will be making its way to the PSP (PlayStationPortable) handheld entertainment system. Developed by the award-winning studio Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available at retail on UMD and digitally from the PlayStationNetwork in North America and Europe this fall.

"We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

"Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee, a young Triad who travels to Liberty City after the mysterious death of his father. Within the game, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise. Specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation; and including all-new story missions; this version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will take full advantage of the power of the PSP system.

GTA was always primarily a Sony affair. Not to mention the typical owner of a PSP is someone who genuinely knows enough about games to take the M into consideration as a piece of the puzzle, not a massive '666' sign emblazened onto the game.

Come to PC lol! Actually, that would probably be tops on my summer list of games to get if it actually did come to the PC in some form... sad..

For a primarily touch screen game, I wonder how this is going to work..

Still, I've got to actually get a copy on my DS...

Yeah, I really enjoyed Chinatown Wars, only because of the diverse things you can do with the touch screen. Without it, it's just another GTA game.

You contradicted yourself in the same post!

Do you know why it didn't sell well? Because the target audience of 14+ year olds are all filthy pirates. The only DS titles that sell are aimed at people who don't know about piracy, i.e parents with kiddiewinks and old people.

@coffeesash Agreed, I know lots of people that PLAYED chinatown wars they just didn't pay for it. I've tried to convince them they are hurting the industry but if the only thing they are hurting are Rockstar then I really don't give a shit.

As alot of people know I think the DS is a far superior system to the PSP out of sheer personal preference but one thing I will say is that I love this idea. I hope they avoid the DS for while to show the pirates that when you pirate their crap you don't get their crap. I didn't buy this but I didn't feel that I had the right to pirate it either and I think GTA fans with a DS can handle being left out if it means they won't see their favourite series going bankupt from idiots like DS pirates.

I really like my DS more, but I wish I could like my PSP more.

That...that didn't really make sense did it?

Is it too much to ask for Rockstar to bring it to XBLA?!

Actually, I think chinatown wars sales are over 500k. Not a bad showing at all, especially given the acceleration of sales. I think it's selling just fine.

Fact-checking @ kaecyus:

"Always primarily a Sony affair?" GTA I and II, though available later on Playstation, were Windows games.

Sad but true, this really sucks, I mean, this people who pirated the game (this so called "hardcore gamers") has been complaining about the fact that there are not many M rated games on the DS and the first that they did when a perfect M rated comes is to pirated it, so thanks to them, the DS lose the exclusivity and the oportunity to have another games developed by rockstar in the DS.

That was a good DS game, but i believe their own marketing failed as well, it's not like every DS owner is not into M titles.

Makes me wish I had a PSP. Chinatown Wars main weakness is the constant touchscreen tomfoolery.

The games graphics were WAY better than any of the PSP versions. I preferred GTA 2 to any modern GTA games. GTA:CW has the best graphic style of modern GTA game but still has the same game play of the new ones too.
