GTA blamed for sex criminal's attacks photo

Yes folks, it's that time again. Once more, a glorious British tabloid has done its part to blame videogames for society's ills. In this thrilling new episode, a sex offender who attacked four women is claimed to have been "influenced" by Grand Theft Auto, which is apparently now a "virtual reality" game. Also, gotta love the age-old "omg there are prostitutes in it," argument that we've NEVER heard a millions times before. Top-notch journalism, Matt Sullivan!

Ryan Chinnery, 19, prowled streets in his car targeting females he thought were prostitutes after becoming obsessed with the video nasty.

He assaulted his victims, none of them hookers, by night in a two-month period.

And the court was told he may have been influenced by the virtual reality game, in which a character drives around on "missions" — including approaching prostitutes who can be beaten up.

At the very least, this story proves that people can't "train" themselves on videogames, considering how utterly pitiful Chinnery's string of attacks were. In his first attempt at being a tough guy, he pulled down a girl's trousers and touched her breasts. How incredibly impressive. The second time he tried to live out his fantasies, the moron and his would-be victim fell into an embankment and he had to be rescued before running away, apologizing. The third offense got as far as him grabbing a woman before scurrying off when another man approached him.

Only the final attempt got anywhere, when Chinnery was able to get a woman to break her arm fending him off. He then assaulted her and "performed a sex act on himself." Of course, the idiot left his DNA all over his victim, and eventually had to admit his crimes after breaking down in tears.

An absolutely pathetic loser. No wonder The Sun is so interested him.

[Thanks, Clance]

He looks like one of the people the sun are proud to have as their readers.
Sun being "chav" and proud as they published sometime back.
Perhaps that's why they are blaming this on computer games because they are proud to have "chavs" as their readers and be part of the "chav" culture but when one of them commits a crime they blame something else, bloody hypocrites

All the sun is good for is looking at tits, not the kind on page 3. What an absolute idiot, Gordon Brown instead of raising taxes on everything! Should do the decent thing and re-institute national service for the unadulterated thickies here in Britain. Least then he could attempt to impress the Taliban or some poor Iraqi sods.

Cheers Jim!

I just blogged it up too but was too angry and too busy at work to type much.

I am serious, I think we should have a mbig old fucking march to Downing Street.

I am going to email this Sullivan. I just think it will make me feel better if anything. Don't worry, it will be constructive.

Notice that they have missed the fact he's in possession of an 18 rated game, even though he's 17. Shouldn't the police be knocking on his door?

As for blaming GTA for this fools madness, I'm sure the media would love to believe this hype, but it all smells a bit circumstancial at best.

Who actually reads the Sun, I only every read the sports pages and that's it. The rest (with the exception of page 3) is all crap.

Strange how the sun article states that he started hunting women in june of last year (2007) and GTA IV came out in October.

The real question is how did he get his copy so freaking early?

According to the article a copy of Grand Theft Auto was found in his home.

The real question is what was he doing playing a 10 year old game in the first place? Not to mention there aren't really any prostitutes in it...

Oh wait, it's just the gutter press not knowing what they're talking about again.

In other news, Ian Huntley was found to have a television in his house - surely an indisputable link between television and child murdering!

So a newspaper (that has no age restriction yet shows soft porn several times in every publication) is blaming a game (that hasn't even got soft porn in it and has an 18+ age rating) for influencing a sexually motivated attack?

I think my hypocrisy meter just imploded.

@cypher VR

I dont think it's ever really about distinguishing fantasy from reality, more a case of a total lack of self responsibility on the individuals part to face up to his wrong doing.

It's an easy escape from your own conscious to blame any outside ' influence ' for indulging in unacceptable behaviour.

Muahahha. Oh man, that's sad and pathetic and hilarious and angering at the same time.

I mean, his attacks read like a Ben Stiller movie, had he made one about being a rapist.

You can just tell he's a little shithead from the picture too. Sad little wigger piece of shit.

ok, seriously. Lets start a fund to inform the media about GTA. Sit them down with it, let them get a feel for the controls, and then tell them to get a hooker. oh wait. That might take them a while, especially since I haven't been able to get those hookers in my car since GTA III. They're rarer than achievements to see in IV too.

Grand Theft Auto isn not a good game and shouldn't be played by anyone IMO.
But I'm sorry I don't blame GTA for that happened here. When you beat up women and do all those awful things to them YOU'RE to blame, not some silly video game. Video games don't have arms, legs, and a brain like you should've used wisely my friend...

It reminded me why i don't usually read The Sun
